The "lang" field is special. If you look for a string that contains two or three letters only, as in lang:en or lang:san, it is assumed to refer to an ISO 639 language code, and an exact comparison is performed. If you look for a string longer than that, it is assumed to refer to a language name and the above-mentioned substring matching technique will be used instead. Summary: This record states that the assembly of Nālūr, a brahmadēya in Śēṟṟūr-kūṟṟam sold the (right of collecting the) market-fees of the bazaar-street (in their village) for a lump sum of 25 kāśu to the temple of Mūlasthānattu-Mahādēva at Tirumayānam. The early characters of the inscription make it attributable to the time of Āditya I.

Summary: This records the gift of a perpetual lamp made to the temple of Paramasvāmin at Tiruvāmāttūr a dēvadāna in Vāvalūr-nāḍu by a certain Śiṟiyamārāyaṉ and his brothers, on behalf (or in memory ?) of Śandirāchchaṉ, son of Kāḷi alias Mīṉavaṉ-Mārāyaṉ of Teṉṉavaṉmādēvi (village) in Ve[ṇ]-nāḍu—perhaps in expiation of some wrong done by them to the latter.

Summary: This records the decision of the assembly of Paramēśvara-chaturvēdimaṅgalam (evidently the present Puḷḷalūr) in Eyiṟ-kōṭṭam including the samvatsara-vāriyaperumakkaḷ (members of the Annual Supervision Committee) and two other dignitaries Pirāṉadhi[kārigaḷ], to purchase back and reassign the land which had originally belonged to the temple of Tirumēṟṟaḷi-Mahādēva at the village, for providing with the income therefrom for the sacred bath of the deity and worship and offerings during the three services in the temple every day. It was also resolved by them to form a flower-garden for the temple with the paṭṭi land to the north and west of the temple compound.

Summary: This records a gift of 90 sheep entrusted to two local residents, for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Bhaṭṭāla(ra)ka at Tiruppuṟambiyam, by a shepherd of Kuvāṟu named Nāṭṭuviṭaṅka-Perumaṉṟāḍi. Twelve of these having died, the deficiency is said to have been made up by a certain Maḻavaḍi Kaṇṇaṉ.

Summary: This is an inscription of Rājarāja I. Its continuation is lost after the 4th line. It registers an endowment of twelve kaḻañju of gold by Ta[t*]ta Nārāyaṇi the wife of a local resident, Kauśikaṉ Bhaṭṭaṉ Ādityaṉ Ta[t*]taṉ of Śiṟukoṭṭaiyūr, providing with the interest (piḷavu-paliśai) thereon for the sacred bath of the deity with 108 pots of water on the day of Vishu in Aippigai month, in the temple of Tirunachchiyūr Mahādēva at Maṇaṟkāl, a brahmadēya in Kiḷā[r*]k-kūṟṟam, a subdivision of Maḻa-nāḍu on the northern bank.

Summary: This inscription is left unfinished towards the end. It records the endowment of lands got tax-free after purchase in the village Periyavāṉavaṉmādēvichaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the northern bank (of the river), by Ambalavaṉ Paḻuvūr Nakkaṉ alias Rājarāja-Pallavaraiyaṉ, to provide for the several requirements in connection with the daily worship and offerings to the deity and on special days of the year, in the temple of Śrī Vijayamaṅgalat[tu*]-Dēvar. The value in paddy of each item of expenditure is given for estimating the total annual requirement of the temple to be met from the produce of the lands. The donor figures largely in the records of Uttama-Chōḷa as an officer of the king with the title Vikramasōḻa; and he is surmised to have been held in high esteem under Rājarāja I also as evidenced by his new title Rājarāja-Pallavaraiyaṉ (M.E.R. 1929, II. 29).

Summary: This is stated to be a copy of an old inscription. It records an agreement by the sabhā of Tirukkōḍikā alias Kaṇṇamaṅgalam in Nallāṟṟūr-nāḍu on the northern bank (of the river), to make immune from all taxes, a piece of land sold by them to a resident of the village by name Āttiraiyaṉ Kiḻavaṉ Kōḍikāvaṉ who endowed it to the temple of Mahādēva as meḻukkuppuṟam, i.e., for the maintenance of a servant for cleaning the premises.

Summary: This records an endowment of 30 kaḻañju of gold by Vēḷāṉ Tiruveṇkāḍaḍigaḷ alias Mūvēnda-Piḍavūr-Vēḷāṉ of Piḍavūr in Piḍavūr-nāḍu for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Tiruchchōṟṟuttuṟai-Mahādēva. The ūrkiḻār-makkaḷ of Koḍiyālam, the brahmadēya-kiḻavargaḷ and the ūrār of the village, held themselves responsible for the maintenance of the lamp. Evidently the same gift is recorded in No. 137 of 1931 also in Sanskrit, the text of which is given below. To judge from its writing and disposition with regard to No. 138 of 1931 of the 13th year of Parāntaka I, this is possibly a record of Gaṇḍarāditya.

Mention is made of Tirumaṟaikkāḍaṉ Śokkaṉ alias Śōḻiyaṅga . . . . probably a donor.

Summary: This inscription registers a gift of 90 sheep for burning a lamp in the temple of Kīrttimā[r*]ttāṇḍa-Kāḷap[ri*]yadēva by Śambakkaṉ, son of Pandippāraṉ Kumara-Śeṭṭi, a merchant of Kīrttimā[r*]ttāṇḍa-Kāḷap[ri*]yam village in Siṟutimiri-nāḍu, a district in Paḍuvūr-kōṭṭam. The late Mr. V.Venkayya surmised that the temple might have owed its origin to the Rāshṭrakūṭa king Kṛishṇa III in whose Karhāḍ inscription (Epigraphia Indica, Vol. IV, p. 281), the king is stated to have encamped at Mēlpāḍi for constructing temples to Kālapriya, Gaṇḍamārttāṇḍa, Kṛishṇēśvara and others (M.E.R. 1906, II. 21). The Rājakēsarivarman of this inscription was very probably Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This inscription registers an endowment of two plots of land made by the assembly (peruṅguṟi-perumakkaḷ) of Pēriṅgūr, one for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Mūlasthānattu-Perumānaḍigaḷ, and the other for the daily feeding of a tapasvin in the temple, made for the merit of a servant of the temple named Gaṇavadi Nambi Ārūraṉ who is said to have sacrificed his life for the service of the deity. The exact nature of the sacrifice and the necessity for it are not given in the inscription. The former land is stated to have been left in charge of the Rudragaṇap-perumakkaḷ for being reclaimed. This may belong to Rājarāja I to whose inscription (No. 219 of 1906) on the same wall it bears a close resemblance in writing.

Summary: This is evidently an inscription of Rājarāja I. It states that queen [Pañcha]vaṉ-Mādēviyār paid a visit to the temple of Tiruviḍaimaruduḍaiyār to offer worship to the deity, when she was waited upon by Śiṟṟāyiluḍaiyāṉ the temple manager, the dēvakarmis, the sabhā and the nagaram (merchant guild ?) of Tiruviḍaimarudil. She is also said to have visited the big flower-garden (presented to the temple by ?) Śembiyaṉ-Mādēvi, and this occasion seems to have been marked by some gift of land for the upkeep of the gardener. At this portion the record is damaged.

Summary: This is a slightly damaged record, registering some provision made by a native of Paiyūr-kōṭṭam for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Tiruviśalūr-Āḷvār at Amaninārāyaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam. Avaninārāyaṇa was a well known title of Pallava Nandivarman III (S.I.I. Vol. XII, p. 28). Paiyūr-kōṭṭam seems to have roughly comprised the present Ponneri taluk of the Chingleput district (See A.R. No. 252 of 1912).

It seems to register the exemption granted by the mahāsabhā of Madanamañjari-chaturvēdimaṅgalam a brahmadēya of Neṉmalināḍu to the temple of Tiruvirāmīśvarattu-Mahādēva at the village, from the payment of taxes on one (vēli) and a half of land endowed after purchase by Tirumañjaṇappichchar, a servant (karmi) of the temple, in consideration of a lumpsum received by them from the donor.

Summary: This records an agreement given, in consideration of a lump amount received from the donor, by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam who had assembled in the (hall called) Tiruchchitrakūḍam at the village, remitting the payment of the tax due on 4 of land endowed by a resident of the village named Tiruppēr Bālāśiriyaṉ Mādhavaṉ Subrahmaṇyaṉ for the daily feeding of a Brāhmaṇa versed in the Vēdas in the feeding-house attached to the temple of Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār on the hill. This is one of the 6 inscriptions of the place assigned to Āditya I on the basis of which the dates have been calculated by the late Mr. L.D.Swamikannu Pillai (M.E.R. for 1915, Appendix F) with five possible English equivalents in the period of his reign. But it has been shown above under No. 110 that they may, with greater probability, be referred to the reign of Gaṇḍarāditya of Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This also, like No. 138 above, records an agreement by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai (of the village) after their deliberation in the (hall) Tiruchchitrakūḍam, exempting from tax six of land endowed (to the temple) by Māppāni Kāri Nakkaṉ of Valavūr, a resident of the village, for the daily feeding of a Brāhmaṇa versed in the Vēdas in the feeding house attached to the temple of Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār on the hill, in consideration of a lump-sum received by them from the donor as iṟai-dravyam. This donor has been mentioned in No. 51 above. Possible equivalents of the date given here are discussed by Swamikannu Pillai in the M.E.R. for 1915, page 72, on the assumption that the record was one of Āditya I. This may also, like No. 138, be assignable to Gaṇḍarāditya or Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This inscription is engraved in archaic characters and has been assigned therefore to Āditya I. It records the provision made by the Perunagarattār (merchant community) of Kumaramāttāṇḍapuram in Tiraimūr-nāḍu for the renovation of the surrounding hall (tiruchchuṟṟālai) and the gōpura in a (Jaina) temple called the Milāḍuḍaiyār-paḷḷi. Kumaramārttāṇḍa seems to have been a surname of the Pallava king Nandivarman III (No. 199 of 1907).

Summary: This registers a sale of land tax-free, by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai of Śrīkaṇṭhachaturvēdimaṅgalam to Vēdivēḷāṉ, evidently the donor mentioned in No. 51 above of the 3rd year of the king, for forming a maḍaiviḷāgam (street round the temple. Among the boundaries is mentioned a piece of land granted to the devotees who recited the Tiruppadiyam hymns.

Summary: This is evidently an inscription of Rājarāja I which registers in detail the stock of several gifts made to the temple at different times. These comprised coppervessels for the sacred bath of the deity presented in the 4th year of Uttama-Chōḷa by queen-mother Parāntakaṉ (or Śembiyaṉ)-Mādēviyār; a gold koḷgai set with gems presented by her in the 6th year of the same king; a golden pot for pinnacle over the temple presented by her in the 3rd year of Rājakēsarivarman, evidently Rājarāja I; another set of rich presents made in the same year by the same lady, consisting of a golden image of Chandraśēkharadēva with a gold-plated copper pedestal and silver aureola and ornaments set with gems, besides a silver plate for offerings to the same deity; a silver pot and some gold ornaments by Śōrabbaiyār Tribhuvanamādēviyār, the queen of Uttama-Chōḷa presented in the same year, and a gold flower by the same queen presented in that year in lieu of land gift for the Śivaśrāddha of her husband; some gold ornaments made with the money presented to the temple by Parakēsarivarman (evidently Uttama-Chōḷa himself) in his 10th and 11th years; a gold plate (paṭṭam) presented in the 4th year of Uttama-Chōḷa by Kōyiṟpiḷḷaiyār to the god, 2 lamp-stands by Parāntakaṉ-Mādēvi and 2 by Madhurāntaka (king); lastly 400 kāśu given by Parāntakaṉ-Mādēvi in the 2nd year of (her husband) Gaṇḍarādityadēva alias Mummuḍi-Chōḷadēva towards the Saṅkrānti bath of the deity every month and which was now, in the 6th year of Rājakēsarivarman, converted into a land-endowment by the assembly of Nāṅgūr. At the end is recorded another gift of 125 kaḻañju presented by the same queen for feeding a Brahman in the temple for the merit of her servant (aḍiyāḷ) Ilaichchiyaṉ Maḻapāḍi, for which the same assembly sold a land to her for endowment.

Summary: A gift of 16 kaḻañju of gold left in charge of the mahāsabhā, for a perpetual lamp in the temple, by Kārāmbichchēḍu Vēṅgai Pōśar Vishṇutāḻiya Daśapuriya-Sōmayāji of Paṇḍitavatsalachchēri (quarter) of the village. Paṇḍitavatsala was a surname of Parāntaka I (S.I.I. III, Intr. p. 13).

Summary: This is evidently an inscription of Rājarāja I. It records a gift of 900 sheep for the maintenance of ten perpetual lamps to be called ‘Rājarājaṉ’ after the name of the king, in the shrine of Aiñjandi-Durgā-Bhaṭṭārakī at Kachchippēḍu. The royal order was communicated by the king’s officer Kōṉ Vīdiviḍaṅgaṉ alias Villavaṉ-Mūvēndavēḷāṉ of Uttaraṅguḍi in Ārvala-kūṟṟam of Śōḻa-nāḍu, who arranged for the supply of ghee by certain individuals to whom the sheep were distributed. These sheep are stated to have been captured by Kurukāḍi-Kiḻāṉ Paramaṉ Maḻapāḍi alias Mummuḍichchōḻaṉ on the occasion of his overthrow of Śīppuli-nāḍu and Pākkai-nāḍu (Pāki-nāḍu). Of these two regions the former is known to have been subjugated by a general of Parāntaka I (M.E.R. 1913, II. 8) who is also said to have destroyed Nellore in the course of the same campaign. By Nellore this Pākkai-nāḍu should have been meant in particular. They must have been subsequently lost to the Chōḷas till they were recaptured in the reign of Rājarāja.

Summary: This records an agreement given by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai (Big Assembly) of Siṁhavishṇu-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya in Muḍichchō[ḻa*]-nāḍu in consideration of a lump sum of 200 kaḻañju of gold expressed in terms of 3000 kalam of paddy, received by them from the donor, to exempt from all taxes the village Kundamaṅgalam endowed to the temple of Bhūmisundara-Viṇṇagar-Paramasvāmi, by Kaṇṇandai Āṟivāṇaṉ Bhūmisundaraṉ alias Sundaraśōḻa-Mūvēndavēḷāṉ of Vāḻaippandal in Vāḻaippandal-nāḍu in Palkuṉṟak-kōṭṭam, a subdivision of Toṇḍai-nāḍu, who is also said to have built the temple. The donor’s surname suggests that the record may be one of Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This records the decision of the assembly of Paramēśvara-chaturvēdimaṅgalam in Eyiṟ-kōṭṭam in consultation with the Pirān-adhi[kāri] (officer), to enforce the obligation of the uṇaṅgaṟpiḍi land (?) on the Śivabrāhmaṇas of the temple of Śrī Taṇḍaladēva as the latter failed to burn the (stipulated) perpetual lamp (with the income therefrom), and to supervise the maintenance of the lamp in the temple themselves in future, through the perumakkaḷ doing the vāriyam for the year and the ūrāḷvāṉ.

Summary: This records the gift of a lamp-stand and an endowment of 12 kaḻañju of gold for burning a perpetual lamp in the shrine of Mahādēva on the southern side of the temple of Avanikandarppa(gandharva)-Īśvaragṛiham, by Nakkaṉ Akkāranaṅgaiyār the daughter of Dēvaṉār ‘of this Taḷi’ and wife of prince (Piḷḷai) Śēramāṉār. In No. 385 of 1924 from the same place, dated in the 27th year of Rājarāja I, his queen Pañchavan-Mahādēvi is referred to as the daughter of Dēvanār of Avanikandarppapuram. The identity of ‘Piḷḷai Śēramānār’ is not known. He was possibly a feudatory chief holding an important position under the Chōḷa king. Friendly relationship is known to have prevailed between the Chēras and the Chōḷas since the time of Āditya I (S.I.I. Vol. III, No. 89).

Summary: The inscription is badly damaged. The portion to the right of this which is in the same script records a gift of gold for a perpetual lamp in the temple of Mahādēva at Paḻaṅgōḷūr by Chāmuṇḍē . . . ., son of Pāpaiyaṉ, an officer under Nuḷambar Vīraśōḻa. Both this Pāpaiyaṉ and Vīraśōḻa figure in No. 361 of 1925 from the same place, dated in the 29th year of an unspecified king. The latter was possibly a local chieftain who was subordinate to Rājarāja I and was also known as Vīra-Chōḷa.

Summary: This records an endowment of land made by Pūdi Uttamaṉ of Vēḻvūr for offerings in the temple of Mahādēva at Tiruchchiṟṟēmam, a dēvadāna-brahmadēva village in Rājarāja-nāḍu. It was made tax-free by the ūrār of Kuḷakkuḍi in Puṉṟiṟkūṟṟam for a lump-sum of 12 1/2 kaḻañju received by them from the donor. The name of the nāḍu suggests a late date for the inscription. Śiṟṟēmam of Jñānasambandar is evidently this village and not Śittāmūr in the Tirutturaipundi taluk as taken by some hitherto (M.E.R. 1926, II. 9).

Summary: The stones containing this inscription are misplaced and some are lost. It seems to register an undertaking given by the mahāsabhā of the village Kāyār alias Kamalanārāyaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam in Kumuḻi-nāḍu, a subdivision of Āmūr-kōṭṭam in Jayaṅkoṇḍaśōḻa-maṇḍalam, to see to the proper maintenance of offerings, worship and lamps in the temple of Subrahmaṇyadēva at Tirupporiyūr in the same nāḍu, with the endowments made by some private individuals of the place. The name Jayaṅkoṇḍaśōḻamaṇḍalam came to be applied to the country evidently after Rājarāja I. Since the alphabet of the inscription is also very late, the record may be assigned to the reign of Rājakēsarivarman Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷa I (M.E.R. 1934, II-15).

Summary: This inscription records an agreement made by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the southern bank (of the Kāvēri) remitting, in consideration of the receipt of a lump amount, the payment of taxes on four and a half vēli and half of land endowed by Vēṅgai Iḷaiya-rudrakumāra-Kramavittaṉ of the village, for feeding three Śivayōgis and two Brāhmaṇas in the feeding house on the hill of god Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār. The characters of the epigraph make it assignable to a period later than Parāntaka (I)’s reign. The probability is that it might belong to Gaṇḍarāditya (See No. 138 above). The details of date given in the inscription, viz., 6th year, Makara, Tuesday, Ārdrā, also agree for A.D. 955, January 9, Tuesday; the nakshatra ended at ·06.

Summary: This inscription is left incomplete. It registers the sale by the peruṅguṟisabhai of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the southern bank, of the right of using the water in their tank for irrigating a land endowed to the temple of Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār after purchasing the same from the sabhā of Peruveṅgūr, by Veṇbai . . . . Vēdivēḷār ‘who built the śrīvimāna’ of the God (See No. 51 above). Land for digging a channel to carry the water to the land by means of a sluice from this tank is also stated to have been sold to the donor by the sabhā. This is probably a record of the reign of Rājarāja I.

Summary: This inscription registers a sale of land, after purchasing bits of it themselves from several residents of the village, by the assembly of Peruveṅgūr, a brahmadēya in Viḷā-nāḍu to Vēḷāṉ Vīranārāyaṇaṉ alias Śembiyaṉ Vēdivēḷāṉ of Siṟudavūr in Kiḷiyūr-nāḍu ‘who had built the śrīvimāna of god Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār,’ for being endowed by him to that temple. They are stated to have received from him in addition to the cost of land, a lump-amount as iṟaikāval-dravyam towards the payment of all taxes on the gift-land. Among the boundaries of the land is mentioned a hamlet forming part of Uttamaśīli-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a village named after prince Uttamaśīli, son of Parāntaka I. The details of the date agree for A.D. 991, January 15, Thursday, and thus the inscription may be assigned to Rājarāja I.
