Texts
Texts database last updated .
This interface allows you to look for texts in the DHARMA collection. The search form below can be used for filtering results. Matching is case-insensitive, does not take diacritics into account, and looks for substrings instead of terms. For instance, the query edit matches "edition" or "meditation". To look for a phrase, surround it with double quotes, as in "old javanese". Searching for strings that contain less than three characters is not possible.
Per default, all metadata fields are searched (except "lang", see below). Metadata fields are (for now): "title", "editor", "editor_id", "author", "summary", "lang", "script", "repo", "ident". You can restrict search to a specific field by using a field prefix, as in editor:manu or title:"critical edition". Several clauses can be added successively, separated with whitespace. In this case, for a document to be considered a match, all query clauses must match. Try for instance editor:manu title:stone.
Note the use of quotation marks: the query editor:"emmanuel francis" matches all documents edited by Emmanuel Francis, but the query editor:emmanuel francis matches all documents edited by someone called Emmanuel and that also include the name Francis in any metadata field.
The "lang" field is special. If you look for a string that contains two or three letters only, as in lang:en or lang:san, it is assumed to refer to an ISO 639 language code, and an exact comparison is performed. If you look for a string longer than that, it is assumed to refer to a language name and the above-mentioned substring matching technique will be used instead. You can consult a table of languages here.
Documents 1–47 of 47 matching.

Summary: This is the programmatic inscription of the Rājarājeśvara temple founded by Rājarāja I Cōḻa. It contains in its first part the royal order of the 20th day of his 26th regnal year, reported in the first person plural, enjoining that the donations by the king Rājarāja, his elder sister, his wives and other donors to Rājarājeśvara be engraved on the temple (vimāna). Then is a list of various items donated by Rājarāja, from the 312th day of his 25th regnal year up to the 319th day of his 26th regnal year. The second part provides a further list of items donated by Rājarāja between his 23rd and 29th regnal years. The donated items are mostly gold utensils and ornaments. Besides such items, noteworthy are the donation of golden images of Koḷkaideva (Hultzsch’s §3) and Kṣetrapāladeva (Hultzsch’s §33; the attributes of the deity are mentioned), the gilding of the temple pinnacle with copper and gold (Hultzsch’s §18). The inscription explicitly states that the stone-temple (tirukkaṟṟaḷi) of Rājarājeśvara (rājarājīśvaram uṭaiyār, literally the lord of [the liṅga/temple named] Rājarājeśvara [“the lord of Rājarāja”]” was founded by Rājarāja (line 1.6=6) and that the first part of the inscription is engraved on the jagatippaṭai of the temple (Hultzsch’s §51).

Summary: A record of the king discovering unused lands belonging to the temple and later allocating them as nivantams. The income from these lands was intended to cover the expenses of the temple, including those associated with festivals and staff, such as priests, musicians, dancers, and temple women. The endowment specifies the amount given for a reciter to chant mantras (mantrageyam) during the awakening ritual (tiruppaḷḷi eḻucci). Furthermore, fifty-three gold coins were donated for sacred food offerings in the festival of Māṟkaḻi-Tiruvātirai, during which the Lord Kāraiṇai-viṭankar was carried in procession while hearing the Tiruvempāvai. Twenty-two temple women taḷiyilār were added to the existing staff to sing and dance during this festival. Among the signatories appears the pontiff of the maṭha, Caturānapaṇṭitaṉ.
