The "lang" field is special. If you look for a string that contains two or three letters only, as in lang:en or lang:san, it is assumed to refer to an ISO 639 language code, and an exact comparison is performed. If you look for a string longer than that, it is assumed to refer to a language name and the above-mentioned substring matching technique will be used instead. Summary: The inscription is badly damaged. The portion to the right of this which is in the same script records a gift of gold for a perpetual lamp in the temple of Mahādēva at Paḻaṅgōḷūr by Chāmuṇḍē . . . ., son of Pāpaiyaṉ, an officer under Nuḷambar Vīraśōḻa. Both this Pāpaiyaṉ and Vīraśōḻa figure in No. 361 of 1925 from the same place, dated in the 29th year of an unspecified king. The latter was possibly a local chieftain who was subordinate to Rājarāja I and was also known as Vīra-Chōḷa.

Summary: This records an endowment of land made by Pūdi Uttamaṉ of Vēḻvūr for offerings in the temple of Mahādēva at Tiruchchiṟṟēmam, a dēvadāna-brahmadēva village in Rājarāja-nāḍu. It was made tax-free by the ūrār of Kuḷakkuḍi in Puṉṟiṟkūṟṟam for a lump-sum of 12 1/2 kaḻañju received by them from the donor. The name of the nāḍu suggests a late date for the inscription. Śiṟṟēmam of Jñānasambandar is evidently this village and not Śittāmūr in the Tirutturaipundi taluk as taken by some hitherto (M.E.R. 1926, II. 9).

Summary: The stones containing this inscription are misplaced and some are lost. It seems to register an undertaking given by the mahāsabhā of the village Kāyār alias Kamalanārāyaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam in Kumuḻi-nāḍu, a subdivision of Āmūr-kōṭṭam in Jayaṅkoṇḍaśōḻa-maṇḍalam, to see to the proper maintenance of offerings, worship and lamps in the temple of Subrahmaṇyadēva at Tirupporiyūr in the same nāḍu, with the endowments made by some private individuals of the place. The name Jayaṅkoṇḍaśōḻamaṇḍalam came to be applied to the country evidently after Rājarāja I. Since the alphabet of the inscription is also very late, the record may be assigned to the reign of Rājakēsarivarman Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷa I (M.E.R. 1934, II-15).

The mention of the village which is named after the mother of king Uttama-Chōḷa makes the record assignable to the next king after him, viz., Rājarāja I.

Summary: This inscription records an agreement made by the peruṅguṟi-sabhai of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the southern bank (of the Kāvēri) remitting, in consideration of the receipt of a lump amount, the payment of taxes on four and a half vēli and half of land endowed by Vēṅgai Iḷaiya-rudrakumāra-Kramavittaṉ of the village, for feeding three Śivayōgis and two Brāhmaṇas in the feeding house on the hill of god Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār. The characters of the epigraph make it assignable to a period later than Parāntaka (I)’s reign. The probability is that it might belong to Gaṇḍarāditya (See No. 138 above). The details of date given in the inscription, viz., 6th year, Makara, Tuesday, Ārdrā, also agree for A.D. 955, January 9, Tuesday; the nakshatra ended at ·06.

Summary: This inscription is left incomplete. It registers the sale by the peruṅguṟisabhai of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the southern bank, of the right of using the water in their tank for irrigating a land endowed to the temple of Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār after purchasing the same from the sabhā of Peruveṅgūr, by Veṇbai . . . . Vēdivēḷār ‘who built the śrīvimāna’ of the God (See No. 51 above). Land for digging a channel to carry the water to the land by means of a sluice from this tank is also stated to have been sold to the donor by the sabhā. This is probably a record of the reign of Rājarāja I.

Summary: This inscription registers a sale of land, after purchasing bits of it themselves from several residents of the village, by the assembly of Peruveṅgūr, a brahmadēya in Viḷā-nāḍu to Vēḷāṉ Vīranārāyaṇaṉ alias Śembiyaṉ Vēdivēḷāṉ of Siṟudavūr in Kiḷiyūr-nāḍu ‘who had built the śrīvimāna of god Tiruveṟumbiyūr-Āḻvār,’ for being endowed by him to that temple. They are stated to have received from him in addition to the cost of land, a lump-amount as iṟaikāval-dravyam towards the payment of all taxes on the gift-land. Among the boundaries of the land is mentioned a hamlet forming part of Uttamaśīli-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a village named after prince Uttamaśīli, son of Parāntaka I. The details of the date agree for A.D. 991, January 15, Thursday, and thus the inscription may be assigned to Rājarāja I.

Summary: This records the sale for 45 kaḻañju of gold, of the right of collecting the mākkuṟuṇi tax in paddy (lit. a kuṟuṇi of paddy on every of land) from the cultivators of their village by the assembly (peruṅguṟi-sabhai) of Śrīkaṇṭha-chaturvēdimaṅgalam to Śembiyan Vēdivēḷār mentioned above (in No. 164) for the periodical repair of the local tank with the income thus derived. The sabhā is said to have met in the Brahmasthāna for the purpose of this transaction. Evidently an inscription of Rājarāja I.

Summary: This registers the sale of a piece of land by the ūrār (assembly) of Tiruveṟumbiyūr in Kavira-nāḍu to Vēḷāṉ Vīranārāyaṇaṉ alias Śembiyaṉ Vēdivēḷāṉ of Śi[ṟu]davvūr in Kiḷiyūr-nāḍu, who is stated to have ‘built the śrīvimāna of the God.’ This land was to be endowed as jīvita for the maintenance of a watchman to the temple who was to be appointed from among the ūrār. The inscription may belong, like Nos. 163-165 above, to Rājarāja I.

Summary: The inscription is partly built in. It records a sale of land by the nagarattār (merchant guild) of Ulagamādēvipuram in Ōymā-nāḍu to Gaṅgaṉ Ambalavaṉ Gaṇḍarādi[tta]śōḻa-Viḻuppaṟaiyaṉ of Kuvaḷālam (Kolar) in Gaṅgarusāyira province, who endowed it for a flower-garden for the temple. This donor is evidently identical with Ambalavaṉ Gaṇḍarādittaṉār who is referred to in No. 54 above of the 3rd year of Rājakēsarivarman, as belonging to the Perundaram of the king and as having constructed the temple. Like No. 54 this may also be assigned to Rājarāja I. Among the boundaries of the land is mentioned a ridge or pathway called Kalikaṇṭaka-peruvarambu.

Summary: This records an investment of 80 kaḻañju of gold by the standard weight known as Dharmakaṭṭaḷai-kal by the temple at Tiruvūṟal-puram in Puriśai-nāḍu of Maṇaiyiṟ-kōṭṭam with the sabhā of Aparājita-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, who agreed to have this deposit with them in perpetuity and to pay 10 kaḻañju as interest thereon in the month of Chittirai every year and a penal interest of 18 poṉ for every day of default to be recovered from them by the temple in the Dharmāsana. Toṇḍai-nāḍu in which Takkōlam is situated is known to have come under the Chōḷa rule only after the 21st year of Āditya I. Hence this may be assigned to Gaṇḍarāditya.

Summary: This is a bilingual record in Sanskrit and Tamil, of which the first portion is in Grantha. It records a gift of six of land for burning two perpetual lamps in the temple of Tiruchchēlūr-Mādēva at Rājakēsari-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya on the southern bank, by Śēndaṉ Nakkaṉ of Kūṟṟamaṅgalam, a resident of the quarter of the village known as Naratoṅgachchēri evidently after the surname of of a king. This might possibly be a record of Sundara-Chōḷa’s reign.

Summary: This records an endowment of 60 kaḻañju of gold by a certain Ayyaṉ Vēmbaḍigaḷ of the Pārttivaśēkarat-teriñja-Kaikkōḷar (regiment ?) for daily offerings and for feeding in the temple of Tiruveṇgāḍudēvar. The assembly of Nāṅgūr received the amount and sold to the temple tax-free, one vēli of land for this purpose. Among the boundaries of the land mentioned, are a high road leading to Paṭṭaṉam (Kāvērippūmpaṭṭiṉam), and another land which had been endowed to the temple by a certain Kottappichchōḻar (Pottapi-Chōḷa). This person may be identical with the chief Pottappichchōḻar Śattiyaraiyar figuring in a record from Vṛiddhāchalam in the South Arcot district (No. 49 of 1918), dated in the 7th year of Rājarāja I, and hence the present inscription may be assigned to that king. Pārthivaśēkhara after whom the Kaikkōḷar regiment was called seems to have been a title of Rājarāja.

Summary: This is an inscription of Rājarāja I (see 10th piece) consisting of many disconnected fragments. We can however make out that this records an order of Śembiyaṉ-Mahādēviyār, the mother of Uttama-Chōḷa, specifying in great detail the various expenses of worship and offerings in the temple (of Śoṉṉavāṟaṟivār) stated to have been built by her, for which due provision was made by her by endowment of lands. The order apportioning these lands for the specifled requirements was given effect to by three officers Sāramuḍaiyāṉ Araṭṭaṉ Īkkāḍudēvaṉ of the Mūttaparivāram (senior establishment ?), Appūr-Uḍaiyāṉ Āchchaṉ Paṭṭālakaṉ in the Iḷaiyavagai (Junior staff ?) and Āchchaṉ Kampaṉ alias Tirukkaṟṟaḷippichchaṉ of Tirumaṇañjēri. The items of service included the recitation of Tiruppadiyam Talavakāra-Sāmavēda, Taittirīya-Vēda and Chandōga Sāmavēda before the deity, for which twenty-five Brahmans were appointed. Mention is also made of worship to a deity called Amarabhujaṅgadēva in the temple.

Summary: This records an endowment of land after purchase for providing for rice offering during the three services daily in the temple of Tiruvālanduṟai-Mahādēva at Śiṟupaḻuvūr, a brahmadēya in Kuṉṟak-kūṟṟam by the wife (name not given) of Aḍigal Paḻuvēṭṭaraiyar Kaṇḍan Maṟavaṉār. This has been assigned to Rājarāja I (M.E.R. 1926, II, 17).

Summary: This records a gift of 2 of land left in charge of the dēvakarmis for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Paramasvāmi at Tiruppuṟambiyam, a dēvadāna ‘separated from the division Aṇḍāṭṭu-kūṟṟam’, by Śāvāndi Kumaraṉ Mādēvaṉ of Iḍaiyāṟṟukkuḍi (residing at) at Vānavaṉmādēvi-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya in Innambar-nāḍu. The name of the brahmadēya village suggests its origin to Vāṉavanmahādēvi, a queen of Uttama-Chōḷa (M.E.R. 1926, II, 21) or to the queen of Sundara-Chōḷa, the mother of Rājarāja I (ibid. II, 16).

Summary: This is clearly an inscription of Rājarajā I, who was otherwise known as Rājarājakēsarivarman. The name has been read as ‘Rājakēsarivarman’ in the M.E.R. This records an agreement given by the temple authorities of Tiruppugalūr a dēvadāna-brahmadēya in Panaiyūr-nāḍu to burn three twilight lamps in the temple towards the interest on the money received by them from Kāḍaṉ Vaikundaṉ, the headman of Tiruppērūr in Puṟaṅkarambai-nāḍu.

Summary: The inscription registers a sale of land as kuḍinīkkā-dēvadāna by the sabhā, the ūr and the dēvakarmis of the temple at Tiruneḍuṅgaḷam, a dēvadāna in Kavira-nāḍu, for 30 kāśu received by them as kaṟpūra-vilai for the temple, to Kambaṉ Maṇiyaṉ, the headman of Śūralūr, with the stipulation that after clearing the forest and reclaiming the land he was to pay 150 kalam of paddy annually as kāṇikkaḍaṉ to the temple. The land was to be irrigated by the same stream called Kumiḻiyāṟu which also irrigated the temple lands. Mention is made of a certain standard grain-measure (ūrkkāl) called Kōdukulavaṉ. The characters belong to about the 10th century A.D., and from the reference made in it to the officer Rājarāja-Brahmamārāya, the record may be assigned to Rājarāja I. Tiruvēḷpūr (Tirugōkarṇam) of No. 174 above was also in Kavira-nāḍu.

Summary: This records an endowment of a vēli of land for the maintenance of a hall (ambalam) erected by him at Chandralēkhai-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya in Ārkkāṭṭu-kūṟṟam, by Vayiramēgam Piḍāraṉ of Veṇṇāyil in Mīyśeṅgiḷi-nāḍu, after purchasing it tax-free from the Peruṅguṟi-sabhā of the place. The land was allotted in certain specified proportions for the following services in the ambalam: supply of drinking water (to the wayfarers) during summer, keeping the premises clean, supply of oil for a lamp, supply of earthen pots (for the water-shed); and for general periodical repairs. Vayiramēga was a surname of the Pallava king Dantivarman. This is probably a record of Āditya I (M.E.R. 1916, II, 7).

Summary: The inscription is built in in the middle. It seems to register the sale of some land by the ūrār (assembly) of Kaḷakkāṭṭūr in Āmūr-kōṭṭam, to Araiyaṉ Tillaikkūttaṉ alias Rājarāja-Aṇimuri-Nāḍāḷvāṉ who probably endowed it to the temple under the name Kalaikaḷābharaṇaṉ. The shrines of Kāḍugāḷ (Piḍāri) and Śāttaṉ (Śāstā) evidently situated within this land are specifically excluded in the transaction. The surname of the donor suggests that the inscription may belong to Rājarāja I.

Summary: This registers a sale of land by Kuravaśrī Tiruvoṟṟiyūraḍigaḷ-Kramavittaṉ, a member of the āḷuṅgaṇam of Amaninārāyaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, to a lady named Nakkaṉ Varaguṇā, the wife of Marudaṉ Paṭṭaṉ alias Śōḻavēḷāṉ, the headman of Karugāvūr. As the inscription is incomplete the details of the transaction are lost.

Summary: This records an endowment of ten of land for the maintenance of a gardener who was to look after a flower-garden of śiṟuśeṇbagam (champak) laid out by one Tiruveṇkāṭṭu-Pichchaṉ, by the sabhā and ūr of Tiraimūr in co-ordination with the nagarattār of Tiruviḍaimarudil and the patipādamūlattār (of the same village). Tiruveṇkāṭṭu-Pichchaṉ figures in the same capacity in No. 249 of 1907 of the time of Parakēsari ‘who took the head of the Pāṇḍya’ (Āditya II Karikāla). The record may be one of Parāntaka II Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: The inscription opens with two verses in Sanskrit which are damaged, and which mention the heroic achievements in Siṁhaḷa (Ceylon) of a Bāṇa chief (name lost) ‘the ornament of Bali-kula’, and also refer to the daughter of Arikulakēsari. It records an endowment made by this princess, called Ariñjigai-Pirāṭṭiyār and the wife of the Bāṇa, for the conduct of worship and offerings and for burning 2 lamps during the three services every day to god Amarasundaradēva set up by her-probably in memory of her husband-in the temple at Tirunāgēśvaram, a dēvadāna in Tiraimūrnāḍu on the southern bank. Details of items required for each service are also given. As the record is incomplete the nature of the endowment is not clear. Piḷḷaiyār Arikulakēsari, the father of the donatrix is no other than Ariñjaya. Rājakēsarivarman of this inscription should therefore refer to his son and successor Sundara-Chōḷa. The expedition to Ceylon mentioned in the record, wherein the Bāṇa prince is said to have distinguished himself (at the cost of his life), is known to have been led by the Koḍumbāḷūr chief and general Parāntakaṉ Śiṟiyavēḷār in the reign of Sundara-Chōḷa (Ep. Ind. Vol. XII, pp. 124 ff., and M.E.R. 1914., II, 15).
