The "lang" field is special. If you look for a string that contains two or three letters only, as in lang:en or lang:san, it is assumed to refer to an ISO 639 language code, and an exact comparison is performed. If you look for a string longer than that, it is assumed to refer to a language name and the above-mentioned substring matching technique will be used instead. This record commences with the well-known praśasti, Tirumaṉṉi vaḷara etc., of Rājēndra Chōḷa I.

This records the gift of a plate of bell-metal to god Mūlasthānam-uḍaiya Mahādēvar in Tiruvakkarai in Tirubhuvanamahādēvi-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya in Jayaṅgoṇḍaśōḻa-maṇḍalam, and gifts of sheep for two perpetual lamps, one to the god Tiruvuttīśvaram-uḍaiya Mahādēva in Vaḻudavūr, a hamlet of Tiruvakkarai and the other to god Tiruva[ga]stīśvaram-uḍaiya Mahādēva in Oḻugaṟai, another hamlet of Tiruvakkarai, by Kumāri Kuṭṭi alias Abhimāṉamēru-chchōḻamuttaraiyaṉ, a resident of Āṟṟuppākkam, a northern hamlet of Tiruvakkarai.

The same donor made another endowment of sheep for a perpetual lamp in the 10th year of the king.

This is dated Śaka 1461, Śōbhakṛit. The Śaka year cited appears to be a mistake for 1465. The epigraph stops after citing the above date.

It mentions Sadāśiva-mahārāya as the son of Vīrapratāpa Raṅgayadēva who was pleased to witness the [elephant]-hunt.

Vikramachōḷa. Year 12: 1129-30 A.D.

This refers to a skirmish at Māmbākkam in which Karuṇākara-chchōḻamuttaraiyan alias Śūṟṟiyadēvaṉ, younger brother of Moḻakkan Paḷḷikoṇḍāṉ alias Vikramaśōḻa Nīlagaṅgaraiyan died. In order to expiate this sin Ayyāṟan Śāttaṉ alias Rājarāja Śeṅgāṭṭu Moḻakkan is stated to have made a gift of cows for a perpetual lamp to Mūlasthānamuḍaiyār in Tribhuvanamādēvi-chaturvēdimaṅgalam in Vīrāvatāra-vaḷanāḍu in Rāja rāja-vaḷanāḍu.

On grounds of palaeography, the inscription may be assigned to Kulōttuṅga I.

This records the gift of sheep by Tāmar-uḍaiyāṉ Tiruvāṟaipon, the wife of Āṟaiyan [ṉa]ḍaippori Ka[rumaṉ] alias Aḻagiyasōḻa-pPallavaraiyan, a resident of Kārāṇaik kōṭṭai in Viḻupparaiya-nāḍu in Rājēndraśōḻa-vaḷanāḍu for a sandhi lamp to the god at Tiruvakkarai, for the merit of her husband.

The name of the division, Viḻupparaiya-nāḍu, seems to suggest the origin of the name Viḻuppuram, the headquarters of the taluk.

On grounds of palaeography this inscription may be assigned to Kulōttuṅga I (1070-1120 A.D.).

It seems to record some arrangement by the Nāṭṭār in the presence of Nīlagaṅgaraiyar, made in expiation of the sin committed by mistake by Paḷḷi Uḻukkai Nāḍāḻvān for having killed Pachchai Paḷḷi by an arrow in the course of a hunting expedition led by the Nāṭṭār.

This inscription records the assignment of pāḍikāval collected from the dēvadāna lands belonging to the god at Tiruvakkarai in Māttūr-nāḍu at the rate of 2 kalam of paddy per of wet land and 2 kalam of varagu per of dry land, by Śeṅgēṇi Ammaiyappan Pāṇḍi alias Naralōkavīra-ppēraiyan of Muññuṟṟuk-kuḍippaḷḷi in Vijayarājēndra-vaḷanāḍu in Ōymā-nāḍu for the food and other offerings to the Uḍaiyār and Āḻvār at Tiruvakkarai. The amount of paddy to be transformed into rice required for every item is stated to be five units for every two units of rice.

Māṟavarmaṉ Vikramapāṇḍya III. Year 6: 1288-89A.D.

This inscription commences with the praśasti Samasta bhuvanēkavīra, etc., of the king and is dated on the 273rd day of the 6th year.

It records a tax-free gift of land by the king to god Āḷuḍaiya Nāyaṉār at Tiruvakkarai, a taṉiyūr of Māttūr-nāḍu in Jayaṅgoṇḍaśōḻa-maṇḍalam, for a special daily service called Vikrama-Pāṇḍiyaṉ sandhi and an annual festival to be cailed Vikramapāṇḍiyaṉ tirunāḷ, both named after himself.

After the signatures of Guṇamaṅgalam-uḍaiyāṉ and Vaḻudiyadaraiyaṉ the phrase tirueḻuttu occurs, perhaps signifying royal assent.

Kulōttuṅga I. Year 44: 1113-14 A.D.

On account of the high regnal year, palaeography and the fact that two of the Śivabrāhmaṇas mentioned in this inscription figure also in No. 206 below dated in the 3rd regnal year of Vikramaśōḻa, Kulōttuṅgaśōḻadēva of this inscription may be identified with Kulōttuṅga I (1070-1120 A.D.).

This records the gift of 65 kāśu by Vāmaṉaṉ Śrī Rāmaṉ, a resident of Irumuḍiśōḻach-chēri in Tribuhuvanamādēvi-chchaturvēdimaṅgalam for perpetual lamps, one each for the gods Āḷuḍaiyār and Āḻvār at Tiruvakkarai, one sandhi lamp for goddess Durgā, oil for oil bath on Saturdays and māsa-tirunāḻi-eṇṇai for the first two deities. Kulaṅ-giḻavan Āttirayaṉ Kuṉṟameḍuttān Tiruiḍaiyān, Kāśyapan Paṟpanāban Tiruvēṅgaḍam and Bhāradvāji Tiruvēṅgaḍañ-Chūṟai, the śivabrāhmaṇas of the temple undertook to arrange for the burning of the lamps.

Kulōttuṅgachōḷa I. Year 29: 1098-99 A.D.

This inscription commences with the praśasti, Pugaḻmādu viḷaṅga, etc., of the king.

It records the dedication of the services of Aṅgāḍi, her daughter Pēraṅgāḍi and her descendants as dēvaraḍiyār to god Mahādēva in Tiruvakkarai by Amudan Paḷḷikoṇḍān, Amudan Veḷān and Amudan Uyyavandāṉ, the first being referred to as a veḷḷāḷa resident of Pandimaṅgalattu-ppāligaiyūr in Māttūr-nāḍu in Jayaṅgoṇḍaśōḻa-maṇḍalam. This document is endorsed by the first of the three donors who are evidently brothers on account of their patronymic Amudan. The other two of the signatories are apparently described as Rājaśikhāmaṇi-ppallavaraiyaṉ and as the Mūvēndavēḷān of Karikālaśōḻatteṉkarai-nāḍu, a member of the regiment called Mudikoṇḍaśōḻatterinda villigaḷ respectively.

Rājādhirāja II. Year [3]: 1165-66 A.D.

This inscription may be assigned to Rājādhirāja II both on grounds of palæography and on account of the donor . . . . . . . . . . . . Śambuvarāyaṉ being a later member of the family of Śambuvarāyas. Further the king bears the title Tribhuvanachakravartigaḷ which is borne only by later members of the main Chōḷa family. The year 3 is mentioned in the body of the inscription (line 8).

In lines 6 and 7 a transaction of the 12th year of śālaikalamaṟutta Rājakēsari is mentioned. This king may be identified with Rājādhirāja I.

The inscription seems to record the gift of land as dēvadāna by Muṉṉūṟṟu Śeṅgēṇi Miṇḍan Śīya . . . . . . . . Appan Śambuvarāyan of Ōymā-nāḍu. Since the inscription is built in, other details are lost.

Kulōttuṅga I.

This inscription belongs to the reign of Kulōttuṅga I, but the date has been lost It is mentioned that the grant was made from his camp in the garden at Ambil in Kāñchi, where he had his light refreshment (śiruśōṟu).

This inscription records the grant by the king of lands and also of the income from the levies, antarāyam and āchchiyabhōgam from the villages of Tiruvakkarai, Kōraikēṇi Peruṅgēṇi and Maṭṭaikāl apparently to the deities at the Śiva temple in ‘Tiruvakkarai’. Repairs to the temple were also provided for from the above income.

The grant is stated to have been made at the instance of a person who had the title Abhimānarāman.

The characters of this inscription are of the 13th century A.D. Hence the king Perumāḷ Vikramapāṇḍya may be identified as Māṟavarmaṉ Vikramapāṉḍya (III) who ascended the throne in A.D. 1283.

It records the construction of the maṇḍapa by the Pāṇḍya queen, Ulagamuḻudumuḍaiyār.

The details of date given, viz., Śaka 1437, Bhāva, Āḍi 9, correspond to 1515 A.D. July 8. The Śaka year quoted was current.

This inscription records the grant of 2 pieces of land to a Śaiva-maṭha presided over by Tiruvakkarai Tirukkāḷatti Pichchan Meññāṉa(Meyjñāṉa)-māmuṉi for māhēśvarapūjā, by Tirumalai Nāyaka,1 and the śrībhaṇḍārattār of the temple.

Kulōttuṅga III. Year 2: 1179-80 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the 2nd Year of Kulōttuṅgachōḻadēva who was pleased to conquer Madurai and the crowned head of the Pāṇḍya, i.e., Kulōttuṅga III. The donor evidently belongs to the Śambuvarāya family and his title Pāṇḍināḍu-koṇḍān seems to indicate that he participated in the campaign against the Pāṇḍyas.

This records the building of a maṇḍapam, named Gaṇḍar Śūriyan-tirumaṇḍapam in the temple of god Āḷuḍaiyār at Tiruvakkarai in Māttūr-nāḍu in Rājarāja-vaḷanāḍu by Ammai Appaṉ Pāṇḍināḍu-koṇḍāṉ alias Gaṇḍar Sūriyaṉ Śambuvarāyaṉ.

On palæographical grounds this inscription may be assigned to the 12th century. The details of date given viz., 16th year, Kumbha 2, Pūraṭṭādi correspond to 1194 A.D., January 25, Tuesday f.d.n. ·68.

This seems to record the gift of a lamp made of brass to god Āḷuḍaiya Nāyaṉār of Tiruvakkarai in Māttūr-nāḍu in Rājarāja-vaḷanāḍu in Jayaṅgoṇḍaśōḻamaṇḍalam. It mentions one Puṟaiśai Poṉṉambala-kKūtta[ṉ].

This records the gift of 128 cows and 4 bulls entrusted into the hands of śivabrāhmaṇas for 4 perpetual lamps to god Āḷu[ḍai*]ya Nāyanār at Tiruvakkarai, in Māttūr-nāḍu in Rājarāja-vaḷanāḍu, by . . . . . . . . . . gaśoḻa-kKāḍavarāyaṉ.

Śāḷuva Narasiṅgadēva. 1483 A.D.

The titles of Śāḷuva Narasiṅgadēva are given as Śrīman Mahāmaṇḍalīśvaraṉ mēdiṉimīśuragaṇḍa Kaṭṭāri. This inscription is dated on the 28th day in Kārttigai of Śōbhakṛit which will correspond to 1483 A.D., November 26. Narasā-Nāyaka (evidently of the Tuḷuva family) is mentioned in this record as an agent of the king.

This records an order of Narasa-Nāyaka exempting the dēvaḍiyār of god Āḷuḍaiya nayiṉār of Tiruvakkarai from the payment of kalattuṭṭi as Karaikkāṭṭu-ppaṟṟu and Śeṅgāṭṭu-ppaṟṟu were not included in Kōliyanallūr Śīmai (Tiruvakkarai was perhaps included in one of the above two paṟṟus).

This incomplete record commences with the praśasti, Tirumagaḷ pōla, etc., of the king. The donor Śembiyaṉ-mādēviyār is mentioned here as the queen of Gaṇḍarādittadēva and the mother of Uttamachōḷa. This queen, who, it is stated, built this temple called Śivalōkam at Tiruvakkarai in stone also figures as the builder of the temple at Tiruvārūr (vide No. 617 below).

This records the grant of the village Maṇali in Āṉmūr-nāḍu in Ōymā-nāḍu, as dēvadāṉa for god Paramasvāmigaḷ at Śivalōkam, the stone temple built by Śembiyaṉ mahādēviyār. The amount to be paid by the residents of Maṇali to the temple both in kind and in cash towards every item of provisions for worship, offerings and other connected services is given in elaborate detail.

This epigraph contains two portions, one in Sanskrit and the other in Tamil. The former engraved in Grantha characters records that Kōtachōḷaka Vimāna originally built of brick was now rebuilt of stone by Śēndaṉ (Jayantan) Poyakāpati. The Tamil portion which is incomplete while recording the same fact describes him as Kumāri Śēndaṉ alias Jayaṅgoṇḍaśōḻa Viḻupparaiya-nāḍāḻvāṉ, a kuḍippaḷḷi of Poypākkam in Paṉaiyūr-nāḍu in Rājēndraśōḻa-vaḷanāḍu. A share of the contribution is stated to be allotted for the maintenance of the temple servants and the members of the matha attached to the temple.
