His Majesty King Jayasiṁha <supplied reason="explanation">I</supplied> Vallabha <supplied reason="subaudible">was</supplied> eager to adorn the lineage of the majestic Caḷukyas—who are of the Mānavya gotra which is praised by the entire world, who are sons of Hāriti, who are protected by the Mothers who are the mothers of the seven worlds, who were deliberately appointed <supplied reason="explanation">to kingship</supplied> by Lord Mahāsena, who acquired the Boar emblem as a boon by the grace of the divine Nārāyaṇa, and whose bodies have been hallowed through washing <supplied reason="subaudible">in the purificatory ablutions of the Aśvamedha sacrifice</supplied><note>Omitted in the original</note>. His son is His Majesty King Viṣṇuvardhana <supplied reason="explanation">II</supplied>,<note>Viṣṇuvardhana II was in fact the son of Indra Bhaṭṭāraka and nephew of Jayasiṁha I. ·<p n="12-16"><supplied reason="subaudible">This</supplied> Viṣamasiddhi, the son of His Majesty Jayasiṁha Vallabha, has, on the occasion of an eclipse of the moon in the month of Kārttika, given to the son of Doṇaśarman, <supplied reason="subaudible">namely</supplied> Ku<seg cert="low">dg</seg>iśarman—a resident of Okādu belonging to the Āśvalāyani <foreign>gotra</foreign>, learned in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, learned in the six auxiliary sciences <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ṣaḍ-aṅga</foreign></supplied>, devoted to the six duties <supplied reason="explanation">of a Brahmin</supplied>—<supplied reason="subaudible">land</supplied> in Varanāṇḍu district, at the village named Paṇḍimuku, to the west <supplied reason="subaudible">of that village</supplied>.</p>
190<p n="16-20">In the eastern direction is an <seg cert="low"><foreign>akula</foreign></seg> tree. To the south is the road <supplied reason="subaudible">leading to</supplied> the village named Meḻuru. To the west the border is the border of Meḻuru. To the north is a termite mound. In the midst of these, a field to the extent <supplied reason="subaudible">sowable with</supplied> twelve <foreign>khaṇḍika</foreign>s of <foreign>kodrava</foreign> seed has been given, <supplied reason="subaudible">to be measured</supplied> with a rod according to the royal measure, exempt from all taxes. Within the village, a homestead plot, <seg cert="low"><supplied reason="subaudible">and a flower</supplied> garden on the west</seg>.<note>See the apparatus to line 20.</note></p>
·<p n="20">The authority <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ājñapti</foreign></supplied> is <supplied reason="subaudible">the word of the king’s</supplied> own mouth. The reverend Vyāsa too has said:</p>
·<p rend="stanza" n="1">Many <supplied reason="subaudible">kings</supplied> have granted land, and many have preserved it <supplied reason="subaudible">as formerly granted</supplied>. Whosoever at any time owns the land, the fruit/reward <supplied reason="subaudible">accrued of granting it</supplied> belongs to him at that time.</p>

·<p>There is some confusion in the ARIE report as to the numbering of the two Pamidimukkala plate sets. According to the reported contents (<bibl><ptr target="bib:ARIE1916-1917"/><citedRange unit="page">113-114</citedRange><citedRange unit="section">20</citedRange></bibl>), the issuer’s father is Jayasiṁha in No. 14 and Indra Bhaṭṭāraka in No. 15; and No. 14 is not dated while No. 15 is dated to the year 3. On the basis of this information, the plates I call <ref target="DHARMA_INSVengiCalukya00088.xml">Set 1, year 3</ref> correspond to No. 15, and those I call <ref target="DHARMA_INSVengiCalukya00089.xml">Set 2 </ref> correspond to No. 14. However, according to the same report, the seal of No. 15 has a preserved lotus flower, while that of No. 14 does not. This is the opposite of the above, as a lotus flower is visible only on the seal of Set 2. A Devanagari transcript of Set 1 in the ASI headquarters in Mysore bears the title <q>CP No XV of 1916-17</q>, where “XV” has been corrected from “XIV”. The post-correction number is thus consistent with how the contents of the plates are reported, and thus I have equated Set 1 to No. 15 and Set 2 to No. 14. The fact that the transcript's title has been corrected indicates that there was already some confusion about the numbering of these sets in the ASI office. The discrepancy about the reported seals may be a mistake of the ARIE report, or the seals (with the ring now cut) may have been swapped between the sets.</p>
205<p>Like the <ref target="DHARMA_INSVengiCalukya00088.xml">Pamiḍimukkala plates (set 1) of Viṣṇuvardhana II</ref>, the authenticity and attribution of this grant is questionable. The number of omissions and other scribal mistakes in the text is beyond preposterous, and the genealogy is seriously out of step, introducing the ostensible issuer Viṣṇuvardhana as the son of Jayasiṁha I not once but on two separate occasions, while failing to mention any other predecessor including the real father of Viṣṇuvardhana II, Indra Bhaṭṭāraka. Nonetheless, my gut feeling is that this is probably a genuine grant that was seriously botched by the chancellery. I cannot support this with evidence other than to say that no sane forger would have done such a poor job. The two grants are written in very different hands, and although there are common points in their composition, neither seems to be a specimen on which the other may have been modelled (although see the apparatus to line 20).</p>

Commentary

According to the reported contents (Krishna Sastri 1917, pp. 113–114, § 20), the issuer’s father is Jayasiṁha in No. 14 and Indra Bhaṭṭāraka in No. 15; and No. 14 is not dated while No. 15 is dated to the year 3. On the basis of this information, the plates I call Set 1, year 3 correspond to No. 15, and those I call Set 2 correspond to No. 14.
