35 <p>This inscription is dated in the 4th year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājēndra-Chōḷadēva</hi>, and records that the villagers of <hi rend="bold">Ukkal</hi> sold 3000 <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> of land and five water-levers<note>A gift of two water-levers (<hi rend="italic">jala-yantra</hi>) is recorded in the Udayēndiram plates of Pallavamalla; see Vol II. pp. 364 and 372.</note> to a servant of the king, who assigned this land for the maintenance of two boats plying on the village tank.<note>One of the Nāsik inscriptions states that Ṛishabhadatta established boats, on which certain rivers could be crossed gratuitously; see <hi rend="italic">Archaeological Survey of Western India</hi>, Vol. IV. p. 100.</note> </p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 4th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājēndra-Śōḻadēva</hi>. The hand-writing, (<hi rend="italic">referring to</hi>) a deed of sale (<hi rend="italic">vilaiyāvaṇam</hi>) of land, of us, the great assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ukkal</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Vikramābharaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a village</hi>) in its own subdivision of <hi rend="bold">Kāliyūr-kōṭṭam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a district</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>.</p>

The following land was sold for the maintenance of two boats (<hi rend="italic">ōḍam</hi>) which had been assigned to the tank in our village by <hi rend="bold">Kōmuḻāṉ Arai[ya]ṉ Baladēvaṉ</hi>, a servant of the lord <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājēndra-Śōḻadēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">and a native</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Kuvaḷaikōḍu</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Anavara[ta]sundaranallūr</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a village</hi>) in <hi rend="bold">Kuvaḷaikōḍu-nāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Veṇkuṉṟakōṭṭam</hi>.</p>

We have sold, and executed a deed of sale for, (1) three thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi>,— (<hi rend="italic">measured</hi>) by a rod of sixteen spans (<hi rend="italic">śāṇ</hi>), beginning (<hi rend="italic">to measure</hi>) from the west,—of land, which was the common property of the assembly, (<hi rend="italic">which belonged</hi>) to the field (<hi rend="italic">kaḻaṉi</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Śrīyārūr</hi> on the channel of the ‘Palmyra sluice’ (<hi rend="italic">Paṉan-dūmbu), (and</hi>) which was situated to the north of a heap of sand, to the east of the land of the villagers, and to the south of the land (<hi rend="italic">paying</hi>) taxes to the villagers and of the <hi rend="italic">Subrahmaṇya</hi> channel, and (2) five levers (<hi rend="italic">ēttam</hi>) to the east of this (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>), excluding a lever on the open side<note><hi rend="italic">I.e.</hi> that side (<hi rend="italic">vāy</hi>) of the tank which is at a higher level, and opposite (<hi rend="italic">edir</hi>) to the artificial embankment which stops the natural flow of water and thus forms the tank.</note> of the tank in the west, which <hi rend="bold">Kaḻumbar-uḍaiyār</hi> had previously purchased and assigned for (<hi rend="italic">the maintenance of</hi>) a boat.</p>
