The "lang" field is special. If you look for a string that contains two or three letters only, as in lang:en or lang:san, it is assumed to refer to an ISO 639 language code, and an exact comparison is performed. If you look for a string longer than that, it is assumed to refer to a language name and the above-mentioned substring matching technique will be used instead. Summary: This states that a plot of land, 8 mā in extent, in the dēvadāna village Ūragaṉkuḍi belonging to the temple of Avanigandarvva-Īśvaragṛiham in Kuṉṟak-kūṟṟam, which had been lying fallow was brought under cultivation by order of Pūdi Paḻuvēṭṭaraiyaṉ Kumaraṉ Kaṇḍaṉ, son of Pagaiviḍai-Īśvarattu-Dēvanār of Paḻuvūr and left in charge of the 7 temple servants for maintaining two perpetual lamps in the two shrines of the temple. From the mention of Dēvanār in this record with Paḻuvēṭṭaraiyar we may conclude that two other chiefs of this name figuring in the records of Mēlappaḻuvūr (See No. 153 above) also belonged to the Paḻuvēṭṭaraiyar family, though their relationship with each other is not clear. It is possible that ‘Dēvaṉār’ is used in all these cases only as a term of respect and not as a proper name.

Summary: This inscription states that under orders of Aḍigaḷ Paḻavēṭṭaraiyar Maṟavaṉ Kaṇḍaṉār, the temple authorities assigned 124 vēli of dēvadāna land at Paśuṅguḷam in Virai-kūṟṟam on permanent tenancy lease to Vēṭṭakkuḍaiyāṉ Gōvindaṉ Kaḍambaṉ of Poygaikkuṟuviḍam, on condition that he should measure out 2880 kalam of paddy every year to the temple at the rate of 120 kalam for every vēli. Evidently a record of Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: Like all the other records of this place, this also is stated to be a copy of an old inscription engraved an a loose stone which had become useless, and hence to cancel that record. It registers an endowment of three plots of land after purchase, one for converting it into a flower-garden and the other two for the maintenance of its gardeners, for the benefit of the temple of Tirukkōḍikkā by Perumbiḍigu Viñjavadiyaraiyaṉ alias Nakkaṉ Śeruviḍai of Kīḻandi in Malli-nāḍu. The sabhā of Kaṇṇamaṅgalam which was the other name of Tirukkōḍikkā, agreed to make the lands immune from all taxes.

This Irukkuvēḷār is also called Parāntakaṉ Vīraśōḻaṉ in No. 117 (published below) dated in the 5th year of the king. This may be a record either of Gaṇḍarāditya or Parāntaka II Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This inscription registers a sale of half a vēli of land, tax-free, by the sabhā (assembly) of Maṇalkāl, a brahmadēya in Kalār-kūṟṟam, to the temple of Īśvara-Bhaṭṭāraka at Tiruttavattuṟai in Iḍaiyāṟṟu-nāḍu, for 30 kaḻañju of gold endowed for a lamp in it by Naṅgai Varaguṇa-Perumānār, the sister of the Chōḷa king. From No. 233 dated in the 13th year of the king (published above), Varaguṇā is known to have been the wife of the Koḍumbāḷūr chief Parāntakaṉ Iḷaṅgōvēḷār. This is evidently an inscription of Sundara-Chōḷa

Summary: This is a Vaṭṭeḻuttu inscription of Rājarāja I who was also known as Rājarājakēsarivarman. The king’s name is read as Rājakēsarivarman in the M.E.R. for 1905. The inscription records an endowment made for a lamp in the temple by Āchchaṉ Uṟaiyur alias Śōḻiaraiya-Māyileṭṭi, a merchant of Kumaramā[r*]ttāṇḍapuram in Tiraimūṟ-nāḍu. This place with its merchant guild (nagarattār) is already known to us from No. 13 above.

Summary: This inscription registers an endowment of 20 kaḻañju of gold by the Kāśeṭṭāṅgal, for feeding 20 Brahmans on the day of Ārdrā every month, by Muri Kāmakkaṉār, the wife of Iḷaṅgōṉaḍigaḷ on behalf of a person named Ēkavīra-Divākaradēvar. This name which sounds very much like a surname was probably the title of Iḷaṇgōṉaḍigaḷ himself. A body called the Tiruvādirai-gaṇapperumakkaḷ accepted this gift (See No. 232 above).

Summary: This inscription records a gift of thirty kaḻañju of gold for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Mahādēva at Tiruneyttāṉam by Naṅgai Śāttaperumāṉār, the mistress of the king. The sabhā and the ūr of the village who received the endowment utilised the amount for the construction of a bathing maṇṭapa for the deity, but undertook to maintain the lamp out of the income from some land which had been purchased for the temple from the sabhā of Perumbuliyūr. This is the same as No. 36 of 1895 published in South Indian Inscriptions (Texts) Vol. V, No. 593. The early script of the record and the use of puḷḷi marks over basic consonants make it assignable to king Āditya I. Naṅgai Śāttaperumāṉār figures as a donatrix in the king’s 11th year of reign in No. 219 above from Tiruppūndurutti, a neighbouring village.

Tiruneyttāṉam is referred to as a dēvadāna in Poygai-nāḍu.

Summary: This gives the extent and description of the plots of lands endowed, evidently as an addition to those mentioned in Nos. 224 and 225 above, by Uḍayapirāṭṭiyār Vīmaṉ Kundavaiyār after purchase from different owners, for providing for the sacred bath of the deity on the days of Saṅkramaṇa every month with 1,000 potfuls of water. The Rājakēsarivarman of this record is evidently Sundara-Chōḷa whose mother the donatrix was. Mention is made of a road called Gaṇḍaruḷgaṇḍa-vadi probably after the surname of the king, and of a channel called after queen Vānavaṉ-Mahādēvi.

Summary: This is a bilingual record in Sanskrit (portions damaged) and Tamil, and registers an endowment of 20 Karuṅkāśu made to the temple by Bāradāyaṉ Śēnda-Nakkapirāṉbaṭṭa-Sarvakratuyājiyār of Kūṟṟamaṅgalam (the same as the donor of No. 169 above of the 7th year of Rājakēsarivarman), with the proviso that the annual interest of 3 kāśu accruing therefrom was to be given as prize among the competitors, excluding those who were successful in previous years, to the best reciter of prescribed portions of Jaiminīya-Sāmavēda before the god on the night of Tiruvādirai in Mārgaḻi month. The record might be one of Sundara-Chōḷa Parāntaka II.

Summary: This records an endowment of 6 mā of land for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Tirupperunduṟai-Paramēśvara at Chandralēkai-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, a brahmadēya in Ārkkāṭṭu-kūṟṟam, and to provide for the principal offerings on the 6th day of a festival to the god in the month of Chittirai, by Kālāvaṇa Nārāyaṇa-Nārāyaṇaṉ of Tirumaṅgalam a resident of the village. This field is said to have formed part of a plot of 9 mā of land belonging to the donor who had presented the remaining 3 mā to his (younger) wife Śrīrāma Nīlakaṇṭi on the occasion of his marriage with her. This is very probably an inscription of Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: Like the other inscriptions of the place this is said to be a copy of an old document engraved on a loose stone. It records an endowment of 70 kaḻañju of gold, left in charge of the sabhā of Tirukkōḍikkā alias Kaṇṇamaṅgalam, for the daily supply of an ulakku of ghee for a perpetual lamp and of two nāḻi of rice for offerings in the temple of Mahādēva, by Kumāraṉ Gaṇavadi(pati), a merchant of Nandipuram in Paḻaiyāṟu. Paḻaiyāṟu was one of the places in the south where Pallava Nandivarman III is said to have fought battles (Sewell’s Historical Inscriptions of Southern India, p. 34). In later times, it is known to have been a Chōḷa capital under the name Muḍigoṇḍaśōḻapuram, and the royal palace therein is referred to in several inscriptions (M.E.R. 1927, II, 12 and 33). This is distinct from Gaṅgaikoṇḍaśōḻapuram in the Trichinopoly district, the city founded by Rājēndra-Chōḷa I in commemoration of his northern campaign of conquest (S.I.I. Vol. III, Intr. p. 20).

Summary: This is probably an inscription of Sundara-Chōḷa. It comprises two parts the earlier of which registers the sale of a land by two brothers named Bāradāyaṉ Nārāyaṇaṉ Turutti and Bārādāyaṉ Nārāyaṇaṉ Nakkaṉ of Tirutturutti in Ārkāṭṭukūṟṟam, to the temple to meet the fine (daṇḍakāṇam) of 72 kaḻañju and odd of gold imposed by the assembly of the village upon their brother Nārāyaṇaṉ Śrīmādhavaṉ, who however, seems to have died (or run away) without paying the fine. The land included their own portion also in addition to that belonging to their brother and to Bāradāyaṉ Nārāyaṇaṉ Śrīkaṇṭaṉ alias Nārayaṇaṉ Tāḻi who had stood surety to the defaulterbrother. The latter portion states that on the representation (made by these two brothers and by Tāḻi to the king) that their land was unjustly mixed up in the sale transaction for no fault of theirs, it was restored to them by the king’s orders. A portion at the end of the inscription being built in, the exact nature of the conditions of the return is not clear.

It records the gift of a perpetual lamp to the temple of Tiruvālanduṟai-Āḻvār at Ēmappēṟūr in Tirumuṉaippāḍi(-nāḍu) by a certain Kīttimāttāṇḍa-Mēṉiyaṉ of Peruṅkuṟumbu on behalf of his son Malli-Nambi. Kīrttimārttāṇḍa was a surname of the Rāshṭrakūṭa king, Kṛishṇa III. This might probably be a record of Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This inscription has been assigned to the reign of Sundaṟa-Chōḷa on account of its script (M.E.R. 1934, II, 11). It records the death of Poṅgala-Vēmbaḍiyār, a resident of Vēḷūr after rescuing the cattle in a cattle-raid made in this village by another person also called Vēmbaḍi, son of Poṅgalat-Toṇḍaimāṉ of Mēl-Vēḷār in Miykoṉṟai-nāḍu. To judge from the name and surname of the combatants in this fight, it seems to have been a family quarrel between two members of the same clan, both subordinate to one chief Vēṭṭuvadi Vāṇakōvaraiyar.

Summary: This records the remission of taxes granted by the ūrār of Ūṟṟukkāḍu in Ūṟṟukkāṭṭu-kōṭṭam on a land called Mānābharaṇapperuñjeruvu belonging to the (shrine of) god Śāttanār (Śāstā) on the western quarter of the village. Mānābharaṇa was probably a title of the reigning king.

Summary: The inscription is damaged and a portion of it in the middle is lost. This registers a sale of land as a tax-free dēvadāṉa by the members of the Mūlaparishad of Mahēndramaṅgalam to the temple of Tirukkurakkuttuṟai-Perumānaḍigaḷ. Among the signatories occurs the name of a certain Śēkharaṉ Śāttaṉ of Koṟṟamaṅgalam, who is referred to as (a member) of the Maṇigrāmam (mercantile guild) of Rā[jakēsa]ripuram in Maḻa-nāḍu.

Summary: This record states that consequent on the investigation of (the officer or chief) Pirāntaka-Mūvēndavēḷār, the sabhā and the ūrār of Tiraimūr and the ṅagarattār of Tiruviḍaimarudil and the dēvakarmis (of the temple) resumed possession of a land at Viḷaṅguḍi, 10 mā in extent, which had been in the enjoyment of a mālaikāraṉ (garland-maker) without any title for the same, and gave a quarter śey (i.e. 5 mā) of it each to two individuals for raising a jasmine-garden for the temple. This is very probably an inscription of Parāntaka II Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This records a gift of 300 and odd sheep for the maintenance of 3(1/2) perpetual lamps in the temple of Perumāṉaḍigaḷ at Tiruviśalūr in Avaninārāyaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam by Pūrvadēviyār, the mother of Mādēvaḍigaḷ (king ?). Pūrvadēviyār seems to connote merely ‘the elder queen or the queen-mother.’ The palaeography of the record and the high regnal year of the king make it assignable to Parāntaka II Sundara-Chōḷa.

It records an endowment of land for a perpetual lamp made to the temple of Tiruvirāmīśvarattu-Mahādēva at Madanamañjari-chaturvēdimaṅgalam in Neṉmali-nāḍu by Akkumāra-Kramavittaṉ, a member of the āḷuṅgaṇam of the village. This is also probably referable to Sundara-Chōḷa.

Summary: This records a gift of gold by Guṇavaṉ Puttaḍi of Kumārapāḍi in Vaidāvūrnāḍu, a subdivision of Kaḷattūr-kōṭṭam for burning a lamp in the temple of Mahādēva. Kaḷattūr-kōṭṭam was a division in Toṇdai-maṇḍalam in which Vallam and Tiruk kaḻuk-kuṉṟam were also situated (South Indian Inscriptions, Volume II, p. 340). This seems to be assignable to Āditya I.

It records an endowment of two plots of tax-free land, one after purchase and the other after exchange, left in charge of the gaṇavāriya-perumakkaḷ of the temple of Śrī-Pondaipperumāḷ at Rājamalla-chaturvēdimaṅgalam, by Bhāradvāji Sadāśivaṉ of the tiruvuṇṇāḻigai (inner temple) of Tiruvēgambam at Kachchippēḍu (Conjeeveram) for the supply of sandal paste to the god.

Summary: This records an agreement given by three servants of the temple to supply ghee for a perpetual lamp in the temple, and paddy for those bringing water for the sacred bath of the deity from the Kāvērī, in return for the sheep and cows and money received by them at various times in the reign of [Madirai]koṇḍa-Mārāyar including his 19th year. Probably this might refer to the reigning king himself, the Rājakēsari of the record being equated with Sundara-Chōḷa Parāntaka II. It is however not known that he had a reign of 19 years; neither is it clear how that later regnal year could be referred to here except by some mistake. Mention is made of a quarter called Śōḻachūḷāmaṇichchēri, evidently after a surname of the ruler.

Summary: This records an agreement given by Kāmakkāṇi Nakkaṉ Tri[ya*]mbaka-Bhaṭṭaṉ, a servant of the temple to supply a certain quantity of oil daily for lamps in the temple of Tiruchchēlūr-Mahādēva, for which he had received money from the temple in the 14th and 15th years of ‘Mahārāyar who took Madura’, and from a person named Mahēśvara-Kramavittaṉ in the 12th year of the same king, with personal security in each case. ‘Mahārāyar who took Madura’ is evidently the reigning king, and the record is to be referred to Sundara-Chōḷa Parāntaka II.

Summary: This records the gift of a lamp-stand and 10 kaḻañju of gold for burning a perpetual lamp in the temple of Mahādēva at Avanigandharvapura a dēvadāna in Kuṉṟakūṟṟam, by Vīraśōḻa-Aṇukkaṉ Guṇavaṉ Dharaṇivallabhaṉ a resident of the village, who deposited the money with the seven paṭṭuḍaiyār (persons who had the right of worship) in the temple. Probably a record of Sundara-Chōḻa.

Summary: The date of this inscription has been read in the M.E.R. for 1906 as 3[0]. The letters look more like 3~ṉṟuvatu than 3 10~Āvatu and this seems to be the correct reading, since we have not come across a date later than the 27th year for any king bearing the mere name Rājakēsarivarman. This records an endowment of 70 kaḻañju of gold left in charge of the Mūlaparishad of Tiruveḷḷaṟai by Śāttuvāy Kāñjaṉ Dāmōdiraṉ, a resident of the village, for feeding a Brāhmaṇa versed in the Vēdas, every noon after offering in the temple of Tiruvāṉaikkal-Perumānaḍigaḷ.
