Summary: This inscription is engraved in five sections, each of which occupies a separate face of the west wall. It consists of two distinct parts.

The first part extends to about two thirds of line 7 of the first section and describes eleven gold vessels, which were presented on the 310th day of the 25th year of the reign of Kō-Rājakēsarivarman, alias Rājarājadēva, ‘to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Āḍavallār,’ by the king’s elder sister,¹ who was the queen of Vallavaraiyar² Vandyadēvar.

The second part enumerates other gifts of gold vessels and ornaments, which were made by the same royal lady between the 25th and 29th year of the king’s reign. The items detailed in paragraphs 14 to 42 were given ‘to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Āḍavallār Dakshiṇa-Mēru-Viṭaṅkar.’ Paragraphs 44 to 59 describe gifts ‘to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Tañjai-Viṭaṅkar.’

On the three-hundred-and-tenth day of the twenty-fifth year (of the reign) of Kō-Rājakēsarivarman, alias Śrī-Rājarājadēva, who,—while (his) heart rejoieed, that, like the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,—in his life of growing strength, during which, having been pleased to cut the vessel (in) the hall (at) Kāndaḷūr, he conquered by his army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅgai-nāḍu, Gaṅga-pāḍi, Taḍigai-pāḍi, Nuḷamba-pāḍi, Kuḍamalaināḍu, Kollam, Kaliṅgam, Īṛa-maṇḍalam, (the conquest of which) made (him) famous (in) the eight directions, and the seven and a half lakshas) of Iraṭṭa-pāḍi,—deprived the Seriyas of their splendour, while (he) was resplendent (to such a degree) that (he) was worthy to be worshipped everywhere;—the venerable elder sister of Śrī-Rājarājadēva, (who was) the great queen (mahādēvī) of Vallavaraiyar Vandyadēvar, gave to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Āḍavallār, one gold plate (taḷigai), weighing three hundred and ninety-eight kaṛañju and a half by the stone called (after) Āḍavallāṉ.

2. On the same day (she) gave one gold plate, weighing four hundred and ninety-six kaṛañju by the same stone.

3. On the same day (she) gave one gold bowl (maṇḍai), weighing one hundred and ninety-nine kaṛañju by the same stone.

4. On the same day (she) gave one gold bowl, weighing three hundred and ninety-nine kaṛañju and three quarters by the same stone.

5. On the same day (she) gave one gold water-pot (kuṭa), weighing one hundred and ninety-eight kaṛañju and a half by the same stone.

6. On the same day (she) gave one gold water-pot, weighing one hundred and ninetynine kaṛañju and three quarters by the same stone.

11. On the same day (she) gave one golden chunnam box (kaṟaṇḍigaichchoppu),³ including . . . . . . . . a bolt (ōḍāṇi) and a pin (nilaiyāṇi),—weighing one hundred and ninetynine kaṛañju by the same stone.

Second part

12. From the twenty-fifth year to the twenty-ninth year (of the king’s reign), the venerable elder sister of Śrī-Rājarājadēva, (who was) the great queen of Vallavaraiyar Vandyadēvar, gave to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Āḍavallār Dakshiṇa-Mēru-Viṭaṅkar, and to (the goddess) Umāparamēśvarī, who is the consort of our lord Tañjai-Viṭaṅkar, the following sacred ornaments (ābharaṇa), emblems (chihna), etc., of gold, which were weighed by the stone called (after) Āḍavallāṉ and engraved on stone,—excluding those (gifts of) the twenty-fifth year, which had been engraved on the adjacent stones before this (part of the inscription) on the north of this upper tier (jagatippaḍai):—⁴

This inscription is engraved in five sections, each of which occupies a separate face of the west wall. It consists of two distinct parts.

The first part extends to about two thirds of line 7 of the first section and describes eleven gold vessels, which were presented on the 310th day of the 25th year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Kō-Rājakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājarājadēva</hi>, ‘to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallār</hi>,’ by the king's elder sister,<note>According to No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0006">6</ref>, the proper name of this princess was Kundavaiyār.</note> who was the queen of <hi rend="bold">Vallavaraiyar</hi><note>In the first volume, pp. 97, 100 and 112, this word was translated by ‘the Pallava king.’ The reading of the original, however, is clearly <foreign>vallavaraiyar</foreign>, and not <foreign>pallavaraiyar</foreign>.</note> <hi rend="bold">Vandyadēvar</hi>.

The second part enumerates other gifts of gold vessels and ornaments, which were made by the same royal lady between the 25th and 29th year of the king's reign. The items detailed in paragraphs 14 to 42 were given ‘to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallār Dakshiṇa-Mēru-Viṭaṅkar</hi>.’ Paragraphs 44 to 59 describe gifts ‘to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Tañjai-Viṭaṅkar</hi>.’

1. Hail ! Prosperity ! On the three-hundred-and-tenth day of the twenty-fifth year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Kō-Rājakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, who,—while (<hi rend="italic">his</hi>) heart rejoieed, that, like the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,—in his life of growing strength, during which, having been pleased to cut the vessel (<hi rend="italic">in</hi>) the hall (<hi rend="italic">at</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Kāndaḷūr</hi>, he conquered by his army, which was victorious in great battles, <hi rend="bold">Vēṅgai-nāḍu, Gaṅga-pāḍi, Taḍigai-pāḍi, Nuḷamba-pāḍi, Kuḍamalaināḍu, Kollam, Kaliṅgam, Īṛa-maṇḍalam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">the conquest of which</hi>) made (<hi rend="italic">him</hi>) famous (<hi rend="italic">in</hi>) the eight directions, and the seven and a half <hi rend="italic">lakshas</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Iraṭṭa-pāḍi</hi>,—deprived the <hi rend="bold">Seriyas</hi> of their splendour, while (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) was resplendent (<hi rend="italic">to such a degree</hi>) that (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) was worthy to be worshipped everywhere;—the venerable elder sister of <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">who was</hi>) the great queen (<hi rend="italic">mahādēvī</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Vallavaraiyar Vandyadēvar</hi>, gave to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallār</hi>, one gold plate (<hi rend="italic">taḷigai</hi>), weighing three hundred and ninety-eight <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half by the stone called (<hi rend="italic">after</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallāṉ</hi>.

2. On the same day (<hi rend="italic">she</hi>) gave one gold plate, weighing four hundred and ninety-six <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> by the same stone.

3. On the same day (<hi rend="italic">she</hi>) gave one gold bowl (<hi rend="italic">maṇḍai</hi>), weighing one hundred and ninety-nine <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> by the same stone.

10. On the same day (<hi rend="italic">she</hi>) gave one golden receptacle for sacred ashes with lotusornaments (<hi rend="italic">pushkara-patti-maḍal</hi>), together with a stand (<hi rend="italic">aḍi</hi>),—weighing eighty <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> by the same stone.

On the same day (<hi rend="italic">she</hi>) gave one golden chunnam box (<hi rend="italic">kaṟaṇḍigaichchoppu</hi>),<note><foreign>coppu</foreign> is still used as a vulgar form for <foreign>ceppu</foreign>.</note> including . . . . . . . . a bolt (<hi rend="italic">ōḍāṇi</hi>) and a pin (<hi rend="italic">nilaiyāṇi</hi>),—weighing one hundred and ninetynine <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> by the same stone.

12. From the twenty-fifth year to the twenty-ninth year (<hi rend="italic">of the king's reign</hi>), the venerable elder sister of <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">who was</hi>) the great queen of <hi rend="bold">Vallavaraiyar Vandyadēvar</hi>, gave to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallār Dakshiṇa-Mēru-Viṭaṅkar</hi>, and to (<hi rend="italic">the goddess</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Umāparamēśvarī</hi>, who is the consort of our lord <hi rend="bold">Tañjai-Viṭaṅkar</hi>, the following sacred ornaments (<hi rend="italic">ābharaṇa</hi>), emblems (<hi rend="italic">chihna), etc</hi>., of gold, which were weighed by the stone called (<hi rend="italic">after</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Āḍavallāṉ</hi> and engraved on stone,—excluding those (<hi rend="italic">gifts of</hi>) the twenty-fifth year, which had been engraved on the adjacent stones before this (<hi rend="italic">part of the inscription</hi>) on the north of this upper tier (<hi rend="italic">jagatippaḍai):</hi>—<note>This clause refers to the first part of the present inscription, which precedes the second part on the west wall and is consequently, with respect to it, situated in the north. Thirty-five sacred gold flowers, consisting of one hundred and seventy-four <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi>, two <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold,—each sacred gold flower (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) four <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and three quarters, four <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.

28. One pendant (<hi rend="italic">tūkkam</hi>), (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) twenty-nine <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half of gold.

29. One pair of sacred ear-rings (<hi rend="italic">tiru-vāḷi</hi>), consisting of six <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi>, eight <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.

30. One pair of double sacred <hi rend="italic">uṛuttu,</hi><note>Compare <foreign>iraṭṭai uḻuttu</foreign> in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0008">1</ref>, paragraph 12.</note> consisting of ten <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) mañjāḍi</hi> of gold.

31. One pair of sacred ear-rings (<hi rend="italic">tirukkambi</hi>), consisting of fourteen <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and three quarters, (<hi rend="italic">one) mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.

32. One string (<hi rend="italic">vaḍam</hi>) of beads for the marriage-badge (<hi rend="italic">tāli-maṇi</hi>), set with diamonds (<hi rend="italic">vayiram</hi>), consisting of eleven <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) mañjāḍi</hi> of gold,—including one hundred and fifty-seven beads for the marriage-badge, . . . . . . . four <hi rend="italic">paḍugaṇ</hi>, four <hi rend="italic">kaḷḷippū</hi>, one <hi rend="italic">kokkuvāy</hi> and two square diamonds (<hi rend="italic">śavakkam)</hi>.<note>These names of precious stones are not found in the dictionaries. Among them, <foreign>paṭukaṇ</foreign> means ‘the sharp eye,’ <foreign>kaḷḷippū</foreign> ‘the flower of the milk-bush,’ and <foreign>kokkuvāy</foreign> ‘the mouth of the paddy-bird;’ <foreign>cavakkam</foreign> is probably the same as <foreign>cavukkam</foreign>, ‘a square,’ and occurs among various kinds of diamonds in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0007">7</ref>, paragraph 8.</note>

33. One necklace (<hi rend="italic">kaṇṭha-tuḍar</hi>) of three (<hi rend="italic">chains</hi>) soldered into one, (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) sixtytwo <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> of gold.

34. One outer chain (<hi rend="italic">? puṟattuḍar</hi>), including (<hi rend="italic">one) paḍugaṇ, (one) kaḷḷippū</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kokkuvāy,—(consisting of</hi>) twenty-four <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half, two <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.

35. One <hi rend="italic">śāyalam</hi> of diamonds (<hi rend="italic">vayiram</hi>), (<hi rend="italic">containing</hi>) one hundred and twenty-two <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and three quarters of gold.

36. One pair of <hi rend="italic">poṭṭu</hi><note>According to Winslow, <foreign>poṭṭu</foreign> is ‘one of the two marriage-badges, worn, especially by Telugus, on the neck.’</note>) for the arms of the goddess, (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) ninety <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half of gold.

37. One pair of bracelets (<hi rend="italic">kaṭaka</hi>) for the arms of the goddess, (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) fifty-six <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi>, two <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.

38. One pair of rings for the arms of the goddess (<hi rend="italic">tirukkaikkāṟai</hi>),<note>According to Winslow, <foreign>kāṟai</foreign> means ‘a golden or silver collar, a neck-ring for a lad.’ Here and in paragraph 40, as in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0001">1</ref>, paragraphs 101 to 105, it signifies a ring for the arms or feet.</note> with claws<note>Probably tiger's claws are meant.</note> (<hi rend="italic">engraved</hi>) on the outside (<hi rend="italic">? ugirppuṟavaṉ</hi>), (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) one hundred and fifty <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half of gold.

39. One wrought girdle (<hi rend="italic">toṛil-paṭṭigai</hi>), (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) three hundred and forty-four <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> of gold.

40. One pair of rings for the feet of the goddess (<hi rend="italic">tiruvaḍikkāṟai</hi>), with claws (<hi rend="italic">engraved</hi>) on the outside, (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) one hundred and fifty <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a quarter of gold.

41. One pair of <hi rend="italic">śāyalam</hi> for the feet (<hi rend="italic">pāda-śāyalam</hi>),<note>Compare <foreign>vayira-śāyalam</foreign> in paragraph 35, above.</note> (<hi rend="italic">consisting of</hi>) one hundred and nine <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and a half of gold.

42. Ten rings for the toes of the goddess (<hi rend="italic">tirukkāl-mōdiram</hi>), consisting of fourteen <hi rend="italic">kaṛañju</hi> and three quarters, two <hi rend="italic">mañjāḍi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) kuṉṟi</hi> of gold.
