35 <p>This inscription (No. 179 of 1894) is engraved on the south wall of the second <hi rend="italic">prākāra</hi> of the <hi rend="bold">Vēdagirīśvara</hi> temple at <hi rend="bold">Tirukkaḻukkuṉṟam</hi>.<note>See page 143 above.</note> It has been published before in a tentative manner by Mr. V. Kanakasabhai Pillai in the <hi rend="italic">Indian Antiquary</hi>, Vol. XXI. p. 281 ff.<note>Of the numerous misreadings in the transcript I need only note four, because they are connected with proper names. In line 35 of Mr. Kanakasabhai's text, the original does not read <hi rend="italic">Viḻiña</hi>, but <hi rend="italic">viḻunda</hi>; in l 42, not <hi rend="italic">Koṅku</hi>, but <hi rend="italic">Gaṅga</hi>; and in l. 43, not <hi rend="italic">Sinkaḷam</hi>, but <hi rend="italic">Śiṅgaṇam</hi>. The passage from <hi rend="italic">Vikkilan</hi> (l. 28) to <hi rend="italic">veṅkaḷiṛum</hi> (l. 31) is taken from the Kīḻappaḻuvūr and Tiruviḍaimarudūr inscriptions (Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0071">71</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0072">72</ref> above), which read however <hi rend="italic">Vikkalan</hi> instead of <hi rend="italic">Vikkilan</hi>.</note> The date is the 42nd year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Kulōttuṅga</hi> I. · <p>The inscription records that an inhabitant of <hi rend="bold">Rājarājapuram</hi> (l. 17) made over 10 <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi> (l. 14) to the temple authorities, who purchased for this sum from the villagers of <hi rend="bold">Vāṉavaṉmahādēvi-chaturvēdimaṅgalam</hi> (l. 11) some land for maintaining the <hi rend="italic">Maṭha</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Naminandi-Aḍigaḷ</hi> at Tirukkaḻukkuṉṟam (l. 14). As stated by Mr. Kanakasabhai,<note><hi rend="italic">Ind. Ant</hi>. Vol. XXI. p. 284.</note> the person after whom this <hi rend="italic">Maṭha</hi> was named is one of the sixty-three devotees of Śiva, whose lives are described in the <hi rend="italic">Periyapurāṇam</hi>.</p>

· <p>Vāṉavaṉmahādēvi-chaturvēdimaṅgalam belonged to <hi rend="bold">Kumiḻi-nāḍu</hi>, a subdivision of the district of <hi rend="bold">Āmūr-kōṭṭam</hi> (l. 11). The land purchased was situated in <hi rend="bold">Kīraippākkam</hi>, a hamlet in the west of that village (l. 12), and was bounded in the east by <hi rend="bold">Uroḍagam</hi>, in the south by <hi rend="bold">Tāḻaivēḍu</hi>, in the west by <hi rend="bold">Uragambākkam</hi>, and in the north by <hi rend="bold">Taṇḍuṟai</hi> (l. 13).
