·<p n="1-5">the dear son of Maṅgi Yuvarāja, who prevailed in victory <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vijaya-siddhi</foreign></supplied> in whatever goal he desired; His Majesty the supremely pious King <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahārāja</foreign></supplied> Viṣṇuvardhana <supplied reason="explanation">III</supplied>, who was deliberately appointed <supplied reason="subaudible">as heir</supplied> by his mother and father and whose pair <supplied reason="subaudible">OMITTEDof feet were tinted by the hues of the rays from</supplied><note>The text omitted by the scribe is restored in this translation; see the apparatus to line 2.</note> the gems fitted to the surfaces of the crowns of enemy kings bowed down by the blade of his sword; who has by his own valour conquered the circle of the earth; and who is a crocodile-bannered <supplied reason="subaudible">god of love</supplied> to choice young ladies—<supplied reason="subaudible">this Viṣṇuvardhana III</supplied> commands everyone as follows.</p>
·<p n="5-10">Let it be known to you that on the occasion of the winter solstice a field of a measure <supplied reason="explanation">sufficient</supplied> for sowing twelve <foreign>khaṇḍika</foreign>s of <foreign>kodrava</foreign> seed has been given, rendered exempt of all taxes and together with <supplied reason="explanation">the dues for</supplied> gleanings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>uñcha</foreign></supplied>, to the grandson of Śaṅkaraśarman, son of Revaśarman, <supplied reason="subaudible">namely</supplied> Vr̥ddhaśarman, a resident of Vaṁgipaṟu of the Hārīta <foreign>gotra</foreign>, adherent of the Āpastaṁba <foreign>sūtra</foreign>, a knower of the Veda who is thoroughly versed in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas and knows the three Vedas.<note>The qualifications “knower of the Veda” and “knows the three Vedas” (<foreign>veda-vide</foreign> and <foreign>tri-veda-vide</foreign>) are rather redundant. The former may have been intended, along with the specification of the residence, <foreign>gotra</foreign> and <foreign>sūtra</foreign>, to qualify the donor’s grandfather. This would be implied by proximity, but is ruled out by the syntax of the text as composed.</note></p>
