35 <p>This inscription is dated in the 4th year of the reign of “<hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who deprived <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi> of his head.”<note>Another, incomplete inscription of the same king (No. 240 of 1894) is engraved on the <hi rend="italic">maṇḍapa</hi> in front of the Pañchanadēśvara shrine at Tiruvaiyāṟu near Tanjore. With the construction <foreign>vīrapāṇṭiyaṉaittalai koṇṭa</foreign> compare <foreign>ceḻiyaraittecu koḷ</foreign> in the inscriptions of Rājarāja I., <hi rend="italic">e.g.</hi> above, No. 4, l. 3.</note> This king may be identified with <hi rend="bold">Āditya</hi> II. surnamed <hi rend="bold">Karikāla</hi>, the elder brother of Rājarāja I., who, according to the large Leyden grant (l. 58), “as a boy, played sportively in battle with <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi>.”</p>

· <p>The inscription records that a cultivator named <hi rend="bold">Śēṉai</hi> granted one <hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi><note>See Vol. II. p. 359, note 12.</note> of land, from the proceeds of which water and fire-pans<note>Similar endowments for the supply of water and fire occur in the Kūram plates (Vol. I. p. 151, text line 74) and in a Tirukkaḻukkuṉṟam inscription of Kaṉṉaradēva (<hi rend="italic">Ep. Ind</hi>. Vol. III. p. 285, text line 9 f.)</note> had to be supplied to a <hi rend="italic">maṇḍapa</hi> frequented by Brāhmaṇas.</p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the fourth year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who deprived <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi> of (<hi rend="italic">his</hi>) head,—<hi rend="bold">Śēṉai</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">who was</hi>) the son of the cultivator (<hi rend="italic">Veḷḷāḷaṉ</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Śi[kk]ār-uḍaiyāṉ Puliyaṉ</hi> (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) who resided at <hi rend="bold">Śivachūḷāmaṇimaṅgalam</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Vikramābharaṇa-chaturvēdimaṅgalam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a village</hi>) in its own subdivision of <hi rend="bold">Kāliyūr-kōṭṭam</hi>, assigned (one) <hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi> of land in the neighbourhood, to last as long as the moon and the sun, for his own merit (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) for the meritorious purpose of supplying to the <hi rend="italic">Brahmasthāna</hi> in this village water during six months and fire-pans (<hi rend="italic">agnishṭhā</hi>) during six months and of constructing a water-lever in front of the cistern at the <hi rend="italic">maṇḍapa</hi>.<note><foreign>maṇṭakam</foreign> is a Tamil corruption of <foreign>maṇṭapam</foreign>. It occurs in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0007">7</ref>, line 2, and three times in the Kūram plates (Vol. I. No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv01p0i0151">151</ref>, text lines 61 and 74).</note> </p>

· <p>(L. 3.) The great men who manage the affairs of the village in each year, shall supervise this charity. Those who cause obstruction to this, shall incur (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) the sins committed between the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Kanyā</hi>.<note>Kanyā is the same as Kanyākumāri or, more commonly, Kumari, the Tamil name of Cape Comorin.</note> Under these conditions, I, <hi rend="bold">Śēṉai</hi>, assigned (<hi rend="italic">the land</hi>). He who obstructs this, shall be liable to pay a fine of twenty-five <hi rend="italic">kaḻañju</hi> of gold.</p>
