The reading purugupta instead of puragupta may have been first proposed by #Agrawal_1940:60-61, who says that though the ru is uncertain in the Bhitari seal, it is "so clear ... that there can be no doubt reading it" in the Nalanda seals. He also says that according to Hoernle, Cunningham had also read Puru on a coin (ref JASB 1894 p212, untraced).
