35 <p>This inscription is written in beautiful florid characters, resembling those of the large Leyden grant, but mixed with letters of the usual type, especially after line 12. It is dated in the same year as Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0015">15</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0016">16</ref>, and records the grant of a lamp to the <hi rend="bold">Aṟiñjīśvara</hi> temple at <hi rend="bold">Mēṟpāḍi</hi>.</p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 29th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of the glorious king <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-Rājakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, who, <hi rend="italic">etc.,</hi><note>The historical introduction of this inscription is identical with that of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0015">15</ref>; it reads, however, <foreign>taṭikaipāṭi</foreign> (l. 4), while Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0015">15</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0016">16</ref> have <foreign>taṭīkapāṭi</foreign>.</note> —I, the cultivator (<hi rend="italic">Veḷḷāḷaṉ</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Aruvā-[Kīḻāḷ] Muttigaṇḍaṉ</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Marud[a-n]āḍu</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Veṇkuṉṟa-kōṭṭam</hi>, gave one perpetual lamp to (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> of the holy <hi rend="bold">Aṟiñjīśvara</hi> (<hi rend="italic">temple</hi>),—which the lord <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi> had been pleased to build as a resting-place for the king who fell asleep at <hi rend="bold">Āṟṟūr</hi>, in <hi rend="bold">Mēṟpāḍi</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājāśrayapuram</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a city</hi>) in <hi rend="bold">Tūñāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Perumbāṇa-pāḍi</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>,—(<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) assigned to (<hi rend="italic">this lamp</hi>) ninety-six full-grown ewes, which must neither die nor grow old.<note>Compare Vol. II. p. 375, note 3.</note> </p>

Having received (<hi rend="italic">these ewes</hi>), I, the shepherd <hi rend="bold">Ēṇi Gaṅgādharaṉ</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Rājāśrayapuram</hi>, shall pour out daily, as long as the moon and the sun endure, (one) <hi rend="italic">uḻakku</hi> of ghee, (<hi rend="italic">measured</hi>) by the <hi rend="italic">Rājakēsari</hi>).</p>
