In the [Śaka] year six hundred and nine, when Pisces (or Capricorn?) was in the ascendant, under (lunar mansion) Tiṣya, during the third night of the waxing [fortnight] of Āṣāḍha, this beautiful liṅga has been duly erected by the sage called Vidyāvaravindu.

May he, the illustrious Śrī Prabhāsomeśvara by name, standing here on earth in the form of a liṅga, award you happiness [and] bliss!

<p>The lettering is characteristic of the seventh century CE.
The shape of <foreign>ccha</foreign> in the first stanza is extremely eccentric. It seems that the scribe first engraved <foreign>cha</foreign> on the line and then added <foreign>c</foreign> on top of it as an afterthought and with a shape that is easily confused as a vowel marker <foreign>i</foreign>.

Although some Vedicists might consider āsa unexceptional and unexceptionable, a common classical consensus is that it should *only* be used as part of a periphrastic perfect (e.g. kathayām āsa). The un-Pāṇinian verb form āsa has parallels in epic and one celebrated instance in the Kumārasambhava.
In his forth-coming article on the foundation stela of Mebon temple (p. 91, n. 138), he notes that the use of āsa as an independent verb-form is frowned upon by some (e.g. Vāmana in his Kāvyālaṅkārasūtra 5.2.27), but that it is used by no less a poet than Kalidasa in Kumārasambhava 1:35.-->

<p n="1" rend="stanza">Cœdès' assumption of a verb form <foreign>āsa</foreign> of <foreign>munināsa liṅgaṁ</foreign> seems unsatisfactory. In the context, <foreign>suliṅgam</foreign> would be suitable, as shown by parallels in contemporary inscriptions (<ref target="DHARMA_INSCIK00077.xml">K. 77</ref>, st. III and <ref target="DHARMA_INSCIK00582.xml">K. 582</ref>, st. I), and we adopt this reading even though it is rather uncertain that a vowel marker <foreign>u</foreign> was actually ever engraved below the <foreign>s</foreign>.</p>
<p n="2" rend="stanza">Unusual metrical irregularities affect the first hemistich and go along with the irregular placement of <foreign>visarga</foreign> inside the curl of <foreign>śri</foreign> while the expected sandhi would be <foreign>śśri</foreign>.
Regarding <foreign>śrī-prabhāsomeśvaraḥ</foreign>, we tentatively assume that the hypermetrical <foreign>śrī-</foreign> was not intended to be part of the verse. Another way to resolve the metrical irregularity would be to correct <foreign>some</foreign> to <foreign>se</foreign>. The name <foreign>prabhāseśvara</foreign> is found in some contemporary Campā inscriptions (<ref target="DHARMA_INSCIC00081.xml">C. 81</ref>, face C, l. 2; <ref target="DHARMA_INSCIC00087.xml">C. 87</ref>, st. II; and three times in <ref target="DHARMA_INSCIC00096.xml">C. 96</ref>).
Regarding <foreign>liṅgarūpam ipa iha</foreign>, we assume that the author meant <foreign>liṅgarūpa iha saṁjñayā</foreign> and that proper meter can be obtained by applying secondary sandhi (<foreign>liṅgarūpeha saṁjñayā</foreign>) instead of the hiatus bridging <foreign>m</foreign> that we actually find.

Commentary
Cœdès’ assumption of a verb form āsa of munināsa liṅgaṁ seems unsatisfactory. In the context, suliṅgam would be suitable, as shown by parallels in contemporary inscriptions (K. 77, st. III and K. 582, st. I), and we adopt this reading even though it is rather uncertain that a vowel marker u was actually ever engraved below the s.
