⟨1⟩ Hail! Prosperity! On the 124th day of the 24th year ⟨of the reign⟩ of the glorious king Rājarāja-Kesarivarman, alias Śrī-Rājarājadeva, who, ⟨in⟩ his life of growing strength, during which,——⟨in⟩ the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,——he was pleased to destroy the ships ⟨at⟩ Kāntaḷūr-Cālai, and conquered by ⟨his⟩ army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Kaṅka-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Taṭikai-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, ⟨the conquest of which⟩ made ⟨him⟩ famous ⟨in⟩ the eight directions, and the seven and a half lakṣas of Ilaṭṭa-pāṭi,——deprived the Ceḻinas of ⟨their⟩ splendour at the very moment when Utakai, which is worshipped everywhere, was ⟨most⟩ resplendent;——the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva, being graciously seated in the college (kallūri)¹ on the south of the painted hall (citra-kūṭa) at the great hippodrome gate (periya-ceṇṭu-vāyil) in Tañjāvūr, was pleased to order as follows:——

⟨4⟩ “⟨The land of⟩ those landholders in villages of Brāhmaṇas, in villages of Vaikhānasas, and in villages of Śramaṇas² in Cōṇāṭu, in the adjacent districts included in Cōṇāṭu, in Toṇṭai-nāṭḍu, and in Pāṇṭi-nāṭu, alias Rājarāja-vaḷanāṭu,³ who have not paid, on the land owned by them, the taxes due from villages, along with the ⟨other⟩ inhabitants of those villages, for three years, ⟨of which⟩ two are completed, between the 16th and the 23rd years ⟨of my reign⟩, shall become the property of the village and shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the ⟨defaulting⟩ landholders. Also, ⟨the land of⟩ those who have not paid the taxes due from villages for three years, ⟨of which⟩ two are completed, from the 24th year ⟨of my reign⟩, shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the ⟨defaulting⟩ landholders.”

⟨8⟩ Accordingly, having been written by the royal secretary, Rājakēsarinallūr-Kiḻavaṉ, and having been approved by the chief secretary, Mummuḍi-Cōḻa-Brahmamārāyaṉ, and by Mummuṭi-Cōḻa-Pōcaṉ, ⟨this order⟩ was engrossed from dictation onthe 143rd day of the 24th ⟨year of the reign⟩.

<p n="1">Hail! Prosperity! On the 124th day of the 24th year <supplied reason="subaudible">of the reign</supplied> of the glorious king Rājarāja-Kesarivarman, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Śrī-Rājarājadeva, who, <supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> his life of growing strength, during which,——<supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,——he was pleased to destroy the ships <supplied reason="subaudible">at</supplied> Kāntaḷūr-Cālai, and conquered by <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Kaṅka-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Taṭikai-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, <supplied reason="subaudible">the conquest of which</supplied> made <supplied reason="subaudible">him</supplied> famous <supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the eight directions, and the seven and a half <foreign>lakṣa</foreign>s of Ilaṭṭa-pāṭi,——deprived the Ceḻinas of <supplied reason="subaudible">their</supplied> splendour at the very moment when Utakai, which is worshipped everywhere, was <supplied reason="subaudible">most</supplied> resplendent;——the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva, being graciously seated in the college <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kallūri</foreign></supplied><note>Compare Vol. II. p. 109.</note> on the south of the painted hall <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>citra-kūṭa</foreign></supplied> at the great hippodrome gate <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>periya-ceṇṭu-vāyil</foreign></supplied> in Tañjāvūr, was pleased to order as follows:——</p>

<p n="4"><quote><supplied reason="subaudible">The land of</supplied> those landholders in villages of Brāhmaṇas, in villages of Vaikhānasas, and in villages of Śramaṇas<note>i.e. Jainas.</note> in Cōṇāṭu, in the adjacent districts included in Cōṇāṭu, in Toṇṭai-nāṭḍu, and in Pāṇṭi-nāṭu, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Rājarāja-vaḷanāṭu,<note>See Vol. II. p. 320, note 3.</note> who have not paid, on the land owned by them, the taxes due from villages, along with the <supplied reason="subaudible">other</supplied> inhabitants of those villages, for three years, <supplied reason="subaudible">of which</supplied> two are completed, between the 16th and the 23rd years <supplied reason="subaudible">of my reign</supplied>, shall become the property of the village and shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the <supplied reason="subaudible">defaulting</supplied> landholders. Also, <supplied reason="subaudible">the land of</supplied> those who have not paid the taxes due from villages for three years, <supplied reason="subaudible">of which</supplied> two are completed, from the 24th year <supplied reason="subaudible">of my reign</supplied>, shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the <supplied reason="subaudible">defaulting</supplied> landholders.</quote></p>

<p n="8">Accordingly, having been written by the royal secretary, Rājakēsarinallūr-Kiḻavaṉ, and having been approved by the chief secretary, Mummuḍi-Cōḻa-Brahmamārāyaṉ, and by Mummuṭi-Cōḻa-Pōcaṉ, <supplied reason="subaudible">this order</supplied> was engrossed from dictation onthe 143rd day of the 24th <supplied reason="subaudible">year of the reign</supplied>.</p>
