⟨1⟩ Hail! Prosperity! In the 29th year ⟨of the reign⟩ of the glorious king Rājakesarivarman, alias Śrī-Rājarājadeva, who, in his life of growing strength, during which,——⟨in⟩ the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,——he was pleased to destroy the ships ⟨at⟩ Kāntaḷūr-Cālai, and conquered by ⟨his⟩ army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Kaṅka-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Taṭikai-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, ⟨which was the country⟩ of the warlike¹ Ciṅkaḷas, the seven and a half lakṣas of Iraṭṭa-pāṭi, and twelve thousand ancient islands of the sea,——deprived the Ceḻiyas of ⟨their⟩ splendour at the very moment when Utakai,² which is worshipped everywhere, was ⟨most⟩ resplendent;——Kaṇṇaṉ Ārūraṉ, a native of Āvūr, ⟨a village⟩ in Āvūr-kūṟṟam, ⟨a subdivision⟩ of Nittaviṉōta-vaḷanāṭu, ⟨a district⟩ of the country on the southern bank ⟨of the Kāvērī⟩ in Cōḷa-maṇḍalam, ⟨and⟩ a servant (paṇimakaṉ) of the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva, caused to be constructed, in the royal name of Śrī-Rājarājadeva, a well (kiṇaṟu) and a cistern (toṭṭi) on the high-road to the west of Ukkal, alias Śrī-Vikramābharaṇa-caturvedimaṅgalam, a village forming its own subdivision³ of Kāliyūr-kōṭṭam, ⟨a district⟩ of Jayaṅkoṇṭa-cōḷa-maṇṭalam.

⟨6⟩ The same person assigned to those who draw water for the cistern from the well of Śrī-Rājarāja, 2 kuṟuṇis of paddy per day, ⟨measured⟩ by the marakkāl ⟨called after⟩ Arumoḻitēvaṉ,⁴ i.e. 30 kalams of paddy for 6 months; to those who distribute water ⟨in the name of⟩ Śrī-Rājarāja, 2 kuṟuṇis of paddy per day, i.e. 30 kalams for 6 months; to those who supply earthen pots for this water-shed (pantal), 2 tūṇis of paddy per month, i.e. 4 kalams of paddy for 6 months; and for the repair of cracks in the well of Śrī-Rājarāja and in the cistern, 2 kalams and 2 tūṇis of paddy per year; altogether, 66 kalams and 2 tūṇis of paddy.

⟨9⟩ In order to ⟨supply⟩ this paddy, we, the assembly of this village, having received from him the revenue and the purchase-money, having exempted ⟨the land granted⟩ from taxes [9+]

In the 29th year <supplied reason="subaudible">of the reign</supplied> of the glorious king Rājakesarivarman, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Śrī-Rājarājadeva, who, in his life of growing strength, during which,——<supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,——he was pleased to destroy the ships <supplied reason="subaudible">at</supplied> Kāntaḷūr-Cālai, and conquered by <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Kaṅka-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Taṭikai-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, <supplied reason="subaudible">which was the country</supplied> of the warlike<note>This inscription reads <foreign>muraṭṭoḻil</foreign> instead of <foreign>muraṭṭeḻil</foreign>.</note> Ciṅkaḷas, the seven and a half <foreign>lakṣa</foreign>s of Iraṭṭa-pāṭi, and twelve thousand ancient islands of the sea,——deprived the Ceḻiyas of <supplied reason="subaudible">their</supplied> splendour at the very moment when Utakai,<note>On Utakai see Vol. II. p. 250, note 3.</note> which is worshipped everywhere, was <supplied reason="subaudible">most</supplied> resplendent;——Kaṇṇaṉ Ārūraṉ, a native of Āvūr, <supplied reason="subaudible">a village</supplied> in Āvūr-kūṟṟam, <supplied reason="subaudible">a subdivision</supplied> of Nittaviṉōta-vaḷanāṭu, <supplied reason="subaudible">a district</supplied> of the country on the southern bank <supplied reason="subaudible">of the Kāvērī</supplied> in Cōḷa-maṇḍalam, <supplied reason="subaudible">and</supplied> a servant <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>paṇimakaṉ</foreign></supplied> of the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva, caused to be constructed, in the royal name of Śrī-Rājarājadeva, a well <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kiṇaṟu</foreign></supplied> and a cistern <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>toṭṭi</foreign></supplied> on the high-road to the west of Ukkal, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Śrī-Vikramābharaṇa-caturvedimaṅgalam, a village forming its own subdivision<note>On this translation of <foreign>taṉiyūr</foreign> see above, p. 3, note 7.</note> of Kāliyūr-kōṭṭam, <supplied reason="subaudible">a district</supplied> of Jayaṅkoṇṭa-cōḷa-maṇṭalam.</p>

<p n="6">The same person assigned to those who draw water for the cistern from the well of Śrī-Rājarāja, 2 <foreign>kuṟuṇi</foreign>s of paddy per day, <supplied reason="subaudible">measured</supplied> by the <foreign>marakkāl</foreign> <supplied reason="subaudible">called after</supplied> Arumoḻitēvaṉ,<note>This was a surname of Rājarāja I.; see Vol. II. p. 259, note 5.</note> <hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> 30 <foreign>kalam</foreign>s of paddy for 6 months; to those who distribute water <supplied reason="subaudible">in the name of</supplied> Śrī-Rājarāja, 2 <foreign>kuṟuṇi</foreign>s of paddy per day, <hi rend="italic">i.e</hi>. 30 <foreign>kalam</foreign>s for 6 months; to those who supply earthen pots for this water-shed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pantal</foreign></supplied>, 2 <foreign>tūṇi</foreign>s of paddy per month, <hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> 4 <foreign>kalam</foreign>s of paddy for 6 months; and for the repair of cracks in the well of Śrī-Rājarāja and in the cistern, 2 <foreign>kalam</foreign>s and 2 <foreign>tūṇi</foreign>s of paddy per year; altogether, 66 <foreign>kalam</foreign>s and 2 <foreign>tūṇi</foreign>s of paddy.</p>
