Notes
1. Several blocks that contain this inscription are badly damaged. The continuation of the meykkīrtti is expected here.
2. Breaks throughout have been filled up with the help of SII 2.4
3. paḷḷi looks like paṉṉi.
4. Read mukkāṇi .
5. Read pāyappoṉa.
6. Read mukkāṇikkīḻ.
7. The incompletely preserved historical passage is left out in the translation.
8. This seems to be the same as Ghaṭamuni, i.e., Agastya.
9. This appears to have been restored to the temple of Kaḍadēvar, while the remainder of the land was given to the Tañjāvūr temple.
10. See page 36, note 1.
11. I.e., ‘(the country) on the west of the Palāṟu (river).’
12. kaḷam is the Tamil form of the Sanskrit khala.
13. This appears to be the “Peravala Vāykkāl” of the Trichinopoly Manual, p. 5.
14. During a stay at Kuṛittalai in the Trichinopoly district, I was informed that the Peruvaḷavāy channel branches off from the Coleroon (Koḷḷiḍam) near the “Upper Anicut” north of Eṛumaṉūr Railway Station, and passes Śeṭṭimaṅgalam two miles from the head-sluice.
15. Śēṭṭai (i.e., Jyēshṭhā) or Mūdēvi is the goddess of misfortune or poverty, who is considered as the elder sister of Lakshmī, the goddess of fortune; see Ziegenbalg’s Genealogy of the South-Indian Gods, p. 91.
16. According to the Periyapurāṇam, Tiruppaiññīli is a town sacred to Śiva, which is situated on the north of the Kāvērī.
17. I.e., ‘(the country) on the east of the Palāṟu (river);’ compare Mī-Palāṟu in paragraph 5.
18. According to Dr. Gundert’s Malayāḷam Dictionary, koṭṭakāram is the same as koṭṭāram, ‘a stable, an outhouse.’
19. kaṇṭam is the Tamil form of the Sanskrit khaṇḍa.
20. The form Kaṇmāṇaṉ occurs again in paragraph 14 for Kammāṇaṉ, i.e., Kammāḷaṉ: see page 47, note 2.
21. A channel of this name is entered to the east of Kumbhakōṇam on the map of irrigation works, which accompanies the Tanjore Manual.
22. According to Winslow, Kāḷaṉ or Māgāḷaṉ (i.e., Mahākāla) is ‘the leader of a division of the celestial army under the charge of Aiyaṉār’ (see page 48, note 9).
23. This goddess is considered as the mother of Bhairava.
24. kaṭakku is perhaps connected with kiṭai, which occurs in paragraph 5.
25. From a calculation of the total, as given in paragraph 23, it follows that the term kāṇi, as part of a mañjāḍi, means ‘a fortieth,’ and not, as usual, ‘an eightieth,’ just as, in the same case, mā means ‘a tenth,’ and not ‘a twentieth’; see page 36, note 1. This irregular application of the terms mā and kāṇi may be explained by assuming that these fractions refer to a unit of 2 mañjāḍi or (1/10) kaṛañju, which had passed out of use in the time of Rājarāja.
26. This paragraph gives the total of the numbers contained in paragraphs 17 to 22. The whole operation is as follows:—

Commentary
This digital edition treats fractional units such as mukkāl, mukkāṇi, or mākkāṇi as single word forms (e.g., “iraṇṭē mukkālē nāṉku mākkāṇi”), rather than usual segmentation with hyphens (e.g., “iraṇṭē mu-k-kālē nāṉku mā-k-kāṇi”). In some cases, segmentation could imply arithmetically misleading parsing. For instance, eṇmāvarai should be written as eṇ-mā v-arai, which could be then interpreted as “8/20 + 1/2”. In contrast, here it is kept as such in order to keep the mathematical reading (that is, “8/20 + 1/40”) aligned with what it is written on the stone.
Therefore, repeated fractional values throughout this record—those that seem to have formed part of a “fractional grid" used to generate specific values—such as iraṇṭumā (2/20 = 1/10) or eṭṭumā (8/20 = 2/5)—are written altogether. Ambiguous strings such as nāṉkumākkāṇi follow this epigraphic-mathematic segmentation, making it “nāṉkumā + kāṇi” (4/20 + 1/80). Common numeral sequences are spaced in the usual way (e.g., iraṇṭu mākkāṇi). This particular convention aims to preserve a readable epigraphic edition that minimises editorial ambiguity in the interpretation of complex strings of numerals.
