35 <p>This inscription which is dated in the 14th year of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman Uttama-Chōḷadēva</hi> registers a gift of land to the temple at <hi rend="bold">Tirumullaivāyil</hi> by <hi rend="bold">Śembiyaṉmādēviyār</hi> the daughter of <hi rend="bold">Maḻavaraiyar</hi> and queen of <hi rend="bold">Gaṇḍarāditya-Perumāḷ</hi>. The land was purchased by her from the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr-nāḍu</hi> which was a subdivision of <hi rend="bold">Puḻaṟ-kōṭṭam. Tirumullaivāyil</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi> mentioned in the record are villages in the Saidapet taluk of the Chingleput district.</p>

· <p>(Line 1). Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 14th year of (<hi rend="italic">the reign of</hi>) king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Uttama-Chōḷadēva</hi>, we (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr-nāḍu</hi> (<hi rend="italic">which is a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Puḻaṟ-kōṭṭam</hi>, having received eighty <hi rend="italic">kaḻañju</hi> of gold from <hi rend="bold">Śembiyaṉmādēviyār</hi>, the daughter of <hi rend="bold">Maḻavaraiyar</hi> and queen of the glorious <hi rend="bold">Gaṇḍarāditya-Perumāḷ</hi> gave the (<hi rend="italic">following</hi>) land (<hi rend="italic">called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Kīḻēripaṭṭu</hi> after exempting (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) from (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) taxes. (<hi rend="italic">Its boundaries are):</hi></p>

80 <p>the western boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the east of (<hi rend="italic">the ford</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pāṇḍivāyttuṟai</hi>;</p>

· <p>the southern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the north of the swamp (<hi rend="italic">oḻuṟkai</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Kīrainallūr</hi> including (<hi rend="italic">the field called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Śāndikuṇḍil</hi>;</p>

· <p>the eastern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the west of the big path leading to <hi rend="bold">Muṉainallūr</hi>; (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) the northern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the south of the embankment of the tank.</p>

We (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi> exempted from taxes and sold nine thousand and three hundred <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> of land in all, (<hi rend="italic">measured</hi>) by the rod (<hi rend="italic">equal in length to</hi>) sixteen spans (<hi rend="italic">śāṇ</hi>) and situated within the (<hi rend="italic">above described</hi>) boundaries on the four sides of this village<note>See above, p. 285, footnote 6.</note>, to <hi rend="bold">Nambirāṭṭiyār Śembiyaṉmādēviyār</hi>; (<hi rend="italic">viz.</hi>) Kōyilāṉpaṭṭi (<hi rend="italic">field) (measuring one</hi>) thousand and two hundred <hi rend="italic">kuḻi:</hi> the land (<hi rend="italic">śeṟu</hi>) to the east of this (<hi rend="italic">measuring one</hi>) thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi:</hi> high land (<hi rend="italic">mēṭṭēttam</hi>) to the south of this (<hi rend="italic">measuring one</hi>) thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi:</hi> low land (<hi rend="italic">paḷḷakkaḻuval) (measuring</hi>) six hundred <hi rend="italic">kuḻi:</hi> high land (<hi rend="italic">mēṭṭēttam</hi>) to the south of this (<hi rend="italic">measuring) (one</hi>) thousand and two hundred <hi rend="italic">kuḻi: (land</hi>) to the north of this including <hi rend="italic">maṇaliḍu</hi> and <hi rend="italic">kōṟaikkuḻi (measuring) (one</hi>) thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi:</hi> and land growing dry crops including (<hi rend="italic">the field</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mārttumālai-kollai</hi> (<hi rend="italic">and measuring</hi>) three thousand and two hundred <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi>.</p>

Having received this land <hi rend="bold">Taṉkūṭṭamuḍaiyāṉ Vaṇṇakkaṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Vayaṉaśundaraṉ</hi> shall measure out daily (<hi rend="italic">one) nāḻi</hi> of oil to (<hi rend="italic">the temple of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Śiva</hi>) at <hi rend="bold">Tirumullaivāyil</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">so long</hi>) as he measures, (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) shall (<hi rend="italic">be entitled to</hi>) irrigate these lands with first water (<foreign>talainīr</foreign>) and last water (<foreign>kaṭainīr</foreign>) from our tank, shall enjoy (<hi rend="italic">the right of</hi>) the trees growing overground and the wells sunk underneath in this land. We shall not say anything prohibiting (<hi rend="italic">the enjoyment of</hi>) these lands. We (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the big assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi> have thus sold (<hi rend="italic">the lands</hi>). I, <hi rend="bold">Śūṟṟi Kaṇḍattaḍigaḷ</hi> the <hi rend="italic">madhyastha</hi> of this village wrote this at the command of these (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, the members of the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Ambattūr</hi>). This is my hand (<hi rend="italic">i.e., signature). (The assembly of</hi>) all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi> shall protect this (<hi rend="italic">charity</hi>).</p>
