35 <p>The importance of this inscription consists in the fact that it furnishes both the Kaliyuga year and the regnal year of king <hi rend="bold">Uttama-Chōḷa</hi> and thus enables us to fix the year of accession of this sovereign. Since the 13th year of the king corresponded to Kali 4083 (= A. D. 981-82), it follows that he must have ascended the throne in A.D. 969-70. His latest year known so far is the 16th which brings the close of his reign down to the date of accession of his successor <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja</hi> I. which has been calculated and found to be 985-6 A.D.</p>
·
· <p>The name <hi rend="bold">Siṁhavishṇu-chaturvēdimaṅgalam</hi> given to <hi rend="bold">Kañjaṉūr</hi> shows that the conquest of the Chōḷa dominion by the Pallava king <hi rend="bold">Siṁhavishṇu</hi> so specifically claimed for him in the <hi rend="bold">Vēlūrpāḷaiyam</hi> plates,<note>Above, Vol. II, part V, page 503.</note> must evidently have been based on actual facts.</p>
