35 <p>This inscription (No. 458 of 1902) is engraved on the same wall as the preceding one (No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0086">86</ref>). It is dated on the 118th day of the 11th year of <hi rend="bold">Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷa</hi> III. and records that the king sanctioned a grant of land to the temple by a certain <hi rend="bold">Vāḷuvarāyaṉ</hi> (ll. 5 and 12). The land granted was situated in the same two hamlets of Chidambaram which were mentioned in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0086">86</ref>, <hi rend="italic">viz.</hi> <hi rend="bold">Mahīpālakulakālanallūr</hi> (l. 6) and <hi rend="bold">Kaḍavāychchēri</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Tillaināyaganallūr</hi> (l. 8). Chidambaram itself is referred to as <hi rend="bold">Perumbaṟṟappuliyūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Rājādhirāja-vaḷanāḍu</hi> (l. 5), and its Śiva temple as <hi rend="bold">Tiruchchiṟṟambalam-uḍaiyār</hi> (l. 9.).</p>

· <p>(Line 2.) By a single army (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) had the nose of the son of <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi> cut off, gave the great city of <hi rend="bold">Kūḍal</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e</hi>). Madhurā) to <hi rend="bold">Vikrama-Pāṇḍya</hi>, and returned. After this, (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) took the crowned head of <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi>,<note>From No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0088">88</ref> below, text line 4 f., it appears that this phrase implies that the king, while seated on the throne, placed his feet on the crown of the Pāṇḍya king, who thus publicly acknowledged his defeat. On previous occasions I explained the words <hi rend="italic">talai koṇḍa</hi> by ‘who cut off the head;’ see above, pp. 21 and 43, and <hi rend="italic">Ep. Ind</hi>. 90 <p>(L. 3.) After having set up a pillar of victory at the end of the war, (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) raised the banner of victory and great heroism, together with the banner of liberality. Ind</hi>. One half (<hi rend="italic">vēli</hi>), one twentieth and three eightieths of wet land enclosed in these four boundaries thus described, and one eightieth of land (<hi rend="italic">occupied by</hi>) the water-course in the north,—altogether, one half (<hi rend="italic">vēli</hi>) and two twentieths of wet land.</p>

· <p>Having bought out the former owners and having added (<hi rend="italic">this land</hi>) to the various plots (<hi rend="italic">which are</hi>) the temple property of (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Āḷuḍaiyār</hi> as tax-free (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>),—the money that accrues from the second crop (<hi rend="italic">according to</hi>) the land assessment (?) The garlands amounting to one <hi rend="italic">kuṟuṇi</hi> and four <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> (of flowers) per day for each of the attendants of the flower-garden have to be supplied in advance to the <hi rend="italic">Tiruppūmaṇḍapam</hi>.<note>See <hi rend="italic">ibid.</hi> note 3.</note> These (<hi rend="italic">attendants</hi>) shall not be bound to render the services rendered by the attendants of other flower-gardens. This has to be engraved (<hi rend="italic">on</hi>) stone on the wall of the temple.</p>
