35 <p>This modern inscription appears to record, that a certain <hi rend="bold">Mallappa-Nāyakkar</hi> ordered the inhabitants of the village of <hi rend="bold">Puliyūr</hi> to build the <hi rend="italic">maṇḍapa</hi> which adjoins the <hi rend="bold">Bṛihan-nāyakī</hi> shrine, and which was called “the <hi rend="italic">maṇḍapa</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Mūrti-Ammaṉ</hi>,” and that he rewarded their services by assigning to them the remnants of the offerings to the goddess for “as long as the moon and the sun endure.” The name which is applied to the god of the Tanjore temple in this inscription, <hi rend="bold">Periya-Uḍaiya-nāyaṉār</hi>, “the great lord” is evidently the Tamil prototype of the present designation <hi rend="bold">Bṛihad-Īśvara</hi>.</p>
