35 <p>This inscription is dated in the twenty-second year of <hi rend="italic">Tribhuvanachakravartin</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-deva</hi> and in the Śaka year 1160. It records the gift of the village of <hi rend="bold">Kumāramaṅgalam</hi>, which was situated east of <hi rend="bold">Koṟṟa-maṅgalam</hi>, north-west of <hi rend="bold">Aimbūṇḍi—</hi> which lay to the north of <hi rend="bold">Poygai</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājendra-Choḷa-nallūr</hi>—and south of the <hi rend="bold">Pālaṟu. Aimbūṇḍi</hi> is the old name of the modern village of <hi rend="bold">Ammuṇḍi</hi>; it occurs also in an Ammuṇḍi inscription, which will be noticed in Part III (No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv01p0i013">131</ref>). The <hi rend="bold">Pālāṟu</hi> is the well-known <hi rend="bold">Pālār</hi>, the chief river of the North Arcot District.</p>

Prosperity! <hi rend="italic">[In the month of] Tai</hi> of the twenty-second year of the illustrious <hi rend="italic">Tribhuvanachakravartin</hi>, the illustrious <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-deva</hi>, which was current during the Śaka year one thousand one hundred and sixty,—I, <hi rend="bold">Śeṅgeṇi-Vīrāśani-Ammaiyappaṉ</hi>, who has gained victory standing by himself, who shows his sword, <hi rend="bold">Aṛagiya-Śoṛaṉ</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Edirili</hi> . . . . . . . . . . , after having received gold from <hi rend="bold">Rāma</hi> the <hi rend="bold">Keraḷa</hi>, a slave (i.e., <hi rend="italic">worshipper</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Āya-īṉār,</hi><note>This is probably a name of <hi rend="bold">Vishṇu</hi>. It might mean: “he who is without a mother,” and correspond to the Sanskrit <hi rend="bold">Aja</hi>, “the unborn.” Or could it be a corruption of <foreign>aiyaṉār</foreign>, a forest deity of the Tamil districts?</note>—gave to the <hi rend="bold">Vishṇu</hi> temple of <hi rend="bold">Chitra-meṛi-Malaimaṇḍala</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias (the temple of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Aruḷāḷa-Perumāḷ</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">at</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Poygai</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājendra-Śoṛanallūr</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">the village of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Kumāra-maṅgalam</hi> as exclusive property,<note>See page 69, note 2.</note> to last as long as the moon and the sun;—the boundary on the western side is to the east of the <hi rend="italic">tiruvāṛi</hi><note>According to the <hi rend="italic">Dictionnaive Tamoul-Français</hi>, <foreign>tiruvāḻi</foreign> means “a royal seal.”</note> stone put up at the extremity of the boundary of <hi rend="bold">Koṟṟa-maṅgalam</hi>; the boundary on the southern side is to the north of the channel of <hi rend="bold">Aimbūṇḍi</hi>, which lies to the north of <hi rend="bold">Poygai</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājendra-Śoṛa-nallūr</hi>; the boundary on the eastern side is to the west of the <hi rend="italic">tiruvāṛi</hi> stone put up at the extremity of the boundary of <hi rend="bold">Aimbūṇḍi</hi>; the boundary on the northern side is to the south of the (<hi rend="italic">river</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pālāṟu</hi>;—the trees overground and the wells underground, the wet land and the dry land, included within these boundaries in the four directions; including taxes and rights; (<hi rend="italic">the revenue for</hi>) one <hi rend="italic">Veṭṭi,</hi><note>See page 82, note 3.</note> tolls (<hi rend="italic">āyam</hi>), the small taxes (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) the large taxes for the village-police, the rice in <hi rend="italic">Kārttika</hi>, the unripe (<hi rend="italic">fruit</hi>) in <hi rend="italic">Kārttika</hi>, and all other revenue in money; the tax on looms, the tax on shops, the tax on goldsmiths, the tax on oil-mills, the tax on <hi rend="bold">Ājīvakas</hi>,<note>The <hi rend="bold">Ājīvakas</hi> are the <hi rend="bold">Jainas</hi> In stead of <foreign>Ācivakakācu</foreign> we read <foreign>Ācuvakakaṭamai</foreign> in three other Poygai inscriptions and <foreign>Ācuvikaṉ perkkaṭamai</foreign> in the Paḍaveḍu inscription No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv01p0i0078">78</ref>.</note> and all (<hi rend="italic">other</hi>) revenue.</p>
