Commentary

Venkayya 1909 (p. 77, §18) notes:1 “No. 82 of 1908 which is engraved on a boulder near a natural cavern called Āṇṭār-maṭam at Veṭāl in the North Arcot district, belongs to the fourteenth year of a certain Nandi and mentions a paḷḷi or Jaina hermitage at Veṭāl. It cannot be stated with certainty who this Nandi was. But as an inscription at Pāñcapāṇḍavamalai written in the same old alphabet is dated in the 50th year of Nantippōttaraicar, who has been identified with the Pallava king Nandivarman and as this latter is also called Nandin in the Utayēntiram plates it may not be far wrong to suppose that Nandi of the Veṭāl inscription is identical with Nandivarman Pallavamalla.”
