Apparatus

⟨1⟩ baṭanāyāya ⬦ baṭanāyiya N&vH. — ⟨1⟩ saputikāya ⬦ saputakāya N&vH. — ⟨1⟩ Uṁn(i)sa ⬦ panāsa N&vH • Poonacha 2011 was correct in seeing an initial U in the first akṣara, although its reading of the inscription is otherwise quite faulty. Cf. EIAD 283: Uṁniso puphaga⟨ha⟩ṇiyaṁ. In both instances, Uṁnisa may point to neighbouring parts of the stūpa’s encasement, see Tournier [2023] 2021–2022, p. 32.

Translation

A coping: the gift of the baṭanāyā (?) Sudhammā together with her daughter⟨s⟩.

Commentary

Nakanishi & von Hinüber 2014, p. 52 interprets what it reads as baṭanāyiya as “probably an adjective referring to the place name Bataṇa.” It is not impossible, but such a place is not attested anywhere, but it could also be the name of a second donor.
