EIAD 457, pillar fragment from the Amaravati stūpa

Version: (906f5ff), last modified (659910f).

Edition

⟨1⟩ cāpālacetiye māro yācate Osacit(u)

Apparatus

⟨1⟩ cāpālacetiyecāpālacetiya G+S. — ⟨1⟩ yācate Osacit(u)yācate osaṭhita G+SGhosh and Sarkar 1964–1965 suggest reconstructing osaṭhiti, but the proposed reading as an infinitive form makes better sense. We indeed understand osacitu as standing for osajjitu (Skt. ava√sṛj). The intervocalic evolution ja > ca is attested elsewhere in the corpus, see for instance EIAD 319, pavaci[ta] (Skt. pravrajita). Likewise, EIAD 394 has the feminine pavacitāyā.

Translation

At the Cāpāla shrine, Māra requests the Buddha to relinquish his vital compositions.
