35 <p>The officer <hi rend="bold">Śiṟṟiṅgaṇuḍaiyāṉ Parāntaka Mūvēndavēḷāṉ</hi> who has been mentioned in the previous records (Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0200">200</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0202">202</ref>) is stated to have enquired into the temple affairs and to have enhanced the scale of offerings from the unpaid balance of paddy collected from the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> which was a <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna</hi> village of the temple. The record belongs to the 4th year and the 170th day of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who took the head of the Pāṇḍya king.</p>

· <p>As shown in the <hi rend="italic">Madras Epigraphical Report</hi> for 1916, page 118, paragraph 15, the days given after the regnal year of the king have to be taken as those that expired after the completion of that year.</p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 4th year and the 170th day (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who took the head of the <hi rend="bold">Pāṇḍya</hi> (<hi rend="italic">king</hi>), the officer <hi rend="bold">Śiṟṟiṅgaṇuḍaiyāṉ Kōyilmayilai</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Parāntaka-Mūvēndavēḷāṉ</hi> examining in the front hall of the temple of the lord of <hi rend="bold">Tiruviḍaimarudil</hi> the sacred temple business of the lord of <hi rend="bold">Tiruviḍaimarudil</hi> heard the terms of the documents (<hi rend="italic">relating</hi>) to the <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna</hi> and <hi rend="italic">brahmadēya (village</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> which was a <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna</hi> of the lord of <hi rend="bold">Tiruviḍaimarudil</hi>, and found out that the <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> was stated in the documents to be a <hi rend="italic">kuḍinīkki</hi> village (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, one freed from tenancy rights) and that the <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna-brahmadēya</hi> village of <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> according to the (<hi rend="italic">above</hi>) documents had to measure out two hundred and fifty-six <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> of <hi rend="italic">pañchavdra</hi> paddy. (<hi rend="italic">But</hi>) hearing the <hi rend="italic">paḍimāṟṟu</hi> (customary scale) of expenses of the temple (<hi rend="italic">he</hi>) found that for the <hi rend="italic">paḍimāṟṟu</hi> only one hundred and sixty <hi rend="italic">kalam (of paddy</hi>) was being measured out. Also (<hi rend="italic">it was asserted</hi>) that the <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna (village</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> of 20 <hi rend="italic">vēli</hi> was not a <hi rend="italic">kuḍinīkki</hi> and that only eight hundred <hi rend="italic">kalam (of paddy</hi>) were being measured. He then asked the (<hi rend="italic">original</hi>) document which made <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> into a <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna (village</hi>) to be produced (<hi rend="italic">before him</hi>), heard it (<hi rend="italic">and found</hi>) in this document that (<hi rend="italic">the village</hi>) was stated to be <hi rend="italic">kudinīkki</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, freed from tenancy rights) and that this land of 20 <hi rend="italic">vēli</hi>, according to the deed . . . . . in the 3rd year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of this same (<hi rend="italic">king), (was to have measured out</hi>) two thousand and eight hundred <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> of paddy by the measure (<hi rend="italic">called) Tiruviḍaimarudaṉ</hi> according to the deed of contract (<hi rend="italic">aḍai-ōlai</hi>). Since (<hi rend="italic">thus</hi>) the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi>, the <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna-brahmadēya (village</hi>) of this god, has been measuring out one hundred and sixty <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> only of <hi rend="italic">panchavāra</hi> paddy in the past while, according to the document examined, it is found that two hundred and fifty-six <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> of paddy have to be measured out (<hi rend="italic">under this head</hi>), the thus (<hi rend="italic">accumulated balance)</hi><note>The original text has evidently omitted to mention here the other discrepancy, <hi rend="italic">viz.</hi>, that of measuring sight hundred <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> (<hi rend="italic">as landlord's share</hi> ?) instead of 2,800 according to the <hi rend="italic">aḍai-ōlai</hi>. The accumulated balance of this also should have been treated as capital.</note> was converted into a capital and after hearing the existing scale of expenses in presence of this god, it was ordered that a higher scale of expenses (<hi rend="italic">may be adopted</hi>). (<hi rend="italic">The following</hi>) is the list of current daily expenses, drawn up according to the (<hi rend="italic">increased</hi>) scale, . . . . . . of <hi rend="bold">Tiraimūr</hi> and the merchants (<hi rend="italic">nagarattār</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Tiruviḍaimarudil</hi> being present, under the orders of the officer <hi rend="bold">Śiṟṟiṅgaṇuḍaiyāṉ Kōyil Mayilai</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Parāntaka-Mūvēndavēḷāṉ</hi> who scrutinizes the sacred temple business.</p>

Twelve <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> of pounded rice of superior paddy for the sacred rice-offering to the god in the early morning; fifteen <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> for the sacred rice-offering at midday; and one <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> [of rice] for the <hi rend="italic">bali</hi> at midday; twelve <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> for the sacred rice-offering in the night and [one <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi>] of rice for the <hi rend="italic">bali</hi> at night; eight measures for the sacred rice-offering at midnight. To (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Piḷḷaiyār Gaṇapati</hi>, two measures for the sacred rice-offering in the early morning; two measures for the sacred rice-offering at midday; thus in all . . . . . . . . fifty-three <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> for the [sacred] rice-offering . . . . . . and (<hi rend="italic">one) tūṇi, (one) padakku</hi> and five <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> of rice . . . . . . four <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> and one <hi rend="italic">uri</hi> daily of good <hi rend="italic">dhall</hi> and one <hi rend="italic">uri</hi> of <hi rend="italic">dhall</hi> for <hi rend="bold">Piḷḷaiyār</hi>. This is how the scale of expenses was drawn up. May this be under the protection of all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi> as long as the moon and the sun (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>)!</p>
