35 <p>This inscription and No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0048">48</ref> are written continuously, the first few words of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0048">48</ref> occupying the end of line 4 of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref>. At the beginning of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref> it is stated that both inscriptions are copies of earlier stone inscriptions, and that these copies were made when the central shrine of the temple was pulled down. This is the reason why the alphabets of Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref> and 48 are more developed than that of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0046">46</ref>, though No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0046">46</ref> records a grant by a queen of the same king as Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0048">48</ref>. In No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref> she bears the title <hi rend="bold">Vāṇamahādēvī</hi>, <hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> ‘the great queen of the <hi rend="bold">Bāṇa</hi> (king).’ As the queen mentioned in No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0046">46</ref>, she is stated to have been the consort of the Bāṇa king <hi rend="bold">Vāṇavidyādhara</hi>. She was the daughter of <hi rend="bold">Pratipati-Araiyar</hi>, the son of <hi rend="bold">Śivamahārāja-Perumāṉaḍigaḷ</hi>, who had the surnames <hi rend="bold">Śrīnātha</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Kokuṉi</hi>.<note>In No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0048">48</ref>, text line 2, this word appears as <hi rend="italic">Goguṉidha[r]ma</hi>, evidently a misreading of the copyist for <hi rend="italic">Koṅguṇivarman</hi>.</note> This word is a variant or a corruption of <hi rend="bold">Koṅguṇi</hi>, the title of the Western <hi rend="bold">Gaṅga</hi> kings,<note>See <hi rend="italic">Ep. Ind</hi>. Vol. III. p. 164, note 3.</note> and the name Pratipati is a corruption or, more probably, a misreading of the copyist for <hi rend="bold">Pṛithvīpati</hi>. Hence I would identify Pratipati, the son of Śivamahārāja, with the Western Gaṅga king <hi rend="bold">Pṛithivīpati</hi> I., who was the son of <hi rend="bold">Śivamāra</hi><note>This name is perhaps a corruption of Śivamārāja, the Tamil form of Śivamahārāja.</note> and the contemporary of the <hi rend="bold">Rāshṭrakūṭa</hi> king <hi rend="bold">Amōghavarsha</hi> I.<note>Above, Vol. II. p. 380 f.</note> and of the Gaṅga-Pallava king <hi rend="bold">Vijaya-Nṛipatuṅgavikramavarman</hi>.<note><hi rend="italic">Ep. Ind</hi>. Vol. IV. p. 182.</note> The name of the residence of Śivamahārāja was Kuṇilapura according to No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0047">47</ref>, and Nipuṇilapura according to No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0048">48</ref>. Both forms of the word are clearly misreadings of the engraver for <hi rend="bold">Kuvaḷālapura</hi>, the modern <hi rend="bold">Kōlār</hi>, which was the traditional capital of the Gaṅga family.<note>See above, Vol. II. p. 380, note 7, and <hi rend="italic">Ep. Ind</hi>. Vol. IV. p. 200, note 1.</note> </p>

· <p>The <hi rend="bold">Udayēndiram</hi> plates of Vikramāditya II. mention a <hi rend="bold">Bāṇa</hi> chief named <hi rend="bold">Bāṇavidyādhara</hi>. This person must be distinct from the Vāṇavidyādhara of the subjoined inscription, because he stood two generations before Vikramāditya I., the contemporary of Vijaya-Nandivikramavarman<note>See page 90 above.</note> and consequently of Amōghavarsha I.,<note>See page 92 above.</note> while Vāṇavidyādhara was the son-in-law of Pṛithivīpati I., another contemporary of Amōghavarsha I. An inscription at <hi rend="bold">Gūlgānpode</hi> opens with a Sanskrit verse which attributes to the Bāṇa king <hi rend="bold">Vikramāditya-Jayamēru</hi> the surname of <hi rend="bold">Bāṇavidyādhara</hi>.<note><hi rend="italic">Ind. Ant</hi>. Vol. X. p. 39, No. II.</note> Dr. Fleet<note>I am again quoting from a manuscript which he has kindly sent to me; see above, p. 92, note 8.</note> proposes to identify this Vikramāditya with the <hi rend="bold">Vikramāditya</hi> I. of the Udayēndiram plates and with the Vāṇavidyādhara of the subjoined inscription. This identification would suit the fact that Vāṇavidyādhara's queen was the daughter of Pṛithivīpati I.</p>

· <p><hi rend="bold">Vāṇamahādēvī</hi>,—the daughter of <hi rend="bold">Pratipati-Araiyar</hi>, the son of <hi rend="bold">Ko[ṅg]u[ṇ]i</hi>, the righteous <hi rend="italic">Mahārāja</hi>, the supreme lord of <hi rend="bold">Kuṇilapura</hi>,<note>This is a mistake of the copyist for Kuvaḷālapura; see p. 99 above.</note> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrīnātha</hi>, the glorious <hi rend="bold">Śivamahārāja-Perumāṉaḍigaḷ</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) the great queen of <hi rend="bold">Vāṇavidyādha[ra]rāya</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Vāṇarāya</hi>, born from the family of <hi rend="bold">Mahābali</hi>, who had been made door-keeper by the lord of gods and demons, Paramēśvara (Śiva), who is worshipped in all the three worlds,— gave to the members of the assembly of this <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Vallam</hi> twenty <hi rend="italic">kaḻañju</hi> of pure gold for (<hi rend="italic">maintaining</hi>) one perpetual lamp before (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Perumāṉaḍigaḷ</hi>.</p>

· <p>(L. 3.) (<hi rend="italic">As</hi>) interest on this gold, we, the assembly, shall have to supply (one) <hi rend="italic">uri</hi> of ghee per day for one lamp. This ghee we shall have to supply without fail as long as the moon and the sun exist. If (<hi rend="italic">we</hi>) fail (<hi rend="italic">to do so</hi>), we agree that all the <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi> (among us) shall pay as fine five <hi rend="italic">kaḻañju</hi> of gold per day. Though fined thus, we, the assembly, shall (<hi rend="italic">continue</hi>) to supply the ghee without fail. Those of us, who say that this is not (<hi rend="italic">so</hi>), shall incur (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) the sins committed between the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Kumari</hi>.</p>
