35 <p>The date of this inscription is the same as that of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0015">15</ref>. The inscription records that the citizens of <hi rend="bold">Mēṟpāḍi</hi> granted to the <hi rend="bold">Aṟiñjigai-Īśvara</hi> temple the hamlet of <hi rend="bold">Pulikkuṉṟam</hi> on the west of the river <hi rend="bold">Nugā</hi>,<note>See above, page 23.</note> on the north of <hi rend="bold">Kukkaṉūr</hi>, on the east of <hi rend="bold">Teṉkoḷḷi</hi>, and on the south of <hi rend="bold">Pālainellūr</hi>. Pulikkuṉṟam itself is not found on the map; but its southern boundary, Kukkaṉūr,<note>No. 5 on the <hi rend="italic">Madras Survey Map</hi> of the Guḍiyātam tāluka.</note> is situated on the road from Tiruvallam to Mēlpāḍi, and its western and northern boundaries, Teṉkoḷḷi and Pālainellūr, are probably the modern Tempalle and Śrīpādanellūr.<note>Nos. 122 and 121 on the <hi rend="italic">Madras Survey Map</hi> of the Chittūr tāluka.</note> </p>

75 <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 29th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of the glorious king <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-Kēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, who, <hi rend="italic">etc.,</hi><note>The historical introduction of this inscription is identical with that of No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv03p0i0015">15</ref>.</note> —we, the citizens of <hi rend="bold">Mēṟpāḍi</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājāśrayapuram</hi>, in <hi rend="bold">Tūñāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Perumbaṇa-pāḍi</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>, gave the following land as temple land for the expenses (<hi rend="italic">nibandha</hi>) required by (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> of the <hi rend="bold">Aṟiñjigai-Īśvara</hi> (<hi rend="italic">temple</hi>), which the lord <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi> had been pleased to build in our city as a resting-place for the king who fell asleep at <hi rend="bold">Āṟṟūr</hi>. The eastern boundary of <hi rend="bold">Pulikkuṉṟam</hi>,—(<hi rend="italic">which is one</hi>) among the villages that were acquired and belong to our village as hamlets (<hi rend="italic">piḍāgai</hi>), which is not divided into house-sites (<hi rend="italic">maṉai</hi>),<note>See Vol. I. p. 66, note 3.</note> and which is the common property of the city,—(<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the west of the river called <hi rend="bold">Nugā</hi>; the southern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the north of the boundary of <hi rend="bold">Kukkaṉūr</hi>; the western boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the east of the boundary of <hi rend="bold">Te[ṉ]koḷḷi</hi>; and the northern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the south of the boundary of <hi rend="bold">Pālainellūr</hi>.</p>

(<hi rend="italic">The village of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pulikkuṉṟam</hi>, enclosed within these four great boundaries,— the whole land of this <hi rend="bold">Pulikkuṉṟam</hi>, including wet land, dry land and jungle, (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) not excluding the cultivated land,<note>The same expression <foreign>uṇṇilamoḻiviṉṟi</foreign> occurs in line 99 of the Udayēndiram plates of Pṛithivīpati II.; above, Vol. II. p. 386.</note> —we, the citizens of <hi rend="bold">Mēṟpāḍi</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājāśrayapuram</hi>, gave for the expenses required by this god, as tax-free temple land, having engraved (<hi rend="italic">this</hi>) on stone. At the bidding of the citizens, I, the accountant of this city, <hi rend="bold">Nārāyaṇaṉ Aḍaikkalavaṉ</hi>, wrote (<hi rend="italic">this</hi>). This is my writing. This (<hi rend="italic">gift is placed under</hi>) the protection of all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi>.</p>
