35 <p>This interesting record contains an order which <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja</hi> I. issued at (his capital) <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr</hi> on the 124th day of the 24th year of his reign, and which was engrossed on the 143rd day of the same year. This order deals with defaulters of land revenue in villages held by Brāhmaṇas, Vaikhānasas and Jainas in the <hi rend="bold">Chōḷa, Toṇḍai</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Pāṇḍya</hi> countries. The villagers were authorized to confiscate and sell the land on which no taxes had been paid for two full years.</p>

· <p>The royal order was written by the secretary <hi rend="bold">Rājakēsarinallūr Kiḻavaṉ</hi>, or, as he is called in two of the Tañjāvūr inscriptions, <hi rend="bold">Kāṟāyil Eḍuttapādam</hi>.<note>See Vol. II. p. 131 f. and p. 285, note 3.</note> It was signed by the chief secretary <hi rend="bold">Mummuḍi-Chōḷa-Brahmamahārāja</hi>, and by <hi rend="bold">Mummuḍi-Chōḷa-Bhōja</hi>. These two officers are mentioned in the large Leyden grant<note>Lines 129 to 133, 162 to 164, and 436 to 440.</note> and in inscriptions of the Tanjore temple.<note>Vol. II. Nos. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0031">31</ref>, <seg rend="check">12</seg> and <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv02p0i0055">55</ref>.</note> Their original names were <hi rend="bold">Kṛishṇa Rāma</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Īrāyiravaṉ Pallavayaṉ</hi>. During the reign of <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja</hi> I. they bore the titles Mummuḍi-Chōḷa-Brahmamahārāja and Mummuḍi-Chōḷa-Bhōja, which are derived from Mummuḍi-Chōḷa, a surname of Rājarāja I. After the accession of <hi rend="bold">Rājēndra-Chōḷa</hi> I. they received the additional titles Rājēndra-Chōḷa-Brahmamahārāja and Uttama-Chōḷa-Pallavaraiyaṉ.<note>Compare Vol. II. p. 139, note 1, and p. 222, note 4.</note> </p>

On the 124th day of the 24th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of the glorious king <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-Kēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, who, (<hi rend="italic">in</hi>) his life of growing strength, during which,—(<hi rend="italic">in</hi>) the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,—he was pleased to destroy the ships (<hi rend="italic">at</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Kāndaḷūr-Śālai</hi>, and conquered by (<hi rend="italic">his</hi>) army, which was victorious in great battles, <hi rend="bold">Vēṅgai-nāḍu, Gaṅga-pāḍi, Nuḷamba-pāḍi, Taḍigai-pāḍi, Kuḍamalai-nāḍu, Kollam, Kaliṅgam, Īḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">the conquest of which</hi>) made (<hi rend="italic">him</hi>) famous (<hi rend="italic">in</hi>) the eight directions, and the seven and a half <hi rend="italic">lakshas</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Ilaṭṭa-pāḍi</hi>,—deprived the <hi rend="bold">Śeḻinas</hi> of (<hi rend="italic">their</hi>) splendour at the very moment when <hi rend="bold">Udagai</hi>, which is worshipped everywhere, was (<hi rend="italic">most</hi>) resplendent;—the lord <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājarājadēva</hi>, being graciously seated in the college (<hi rend="italic">kallūri)</hi><note>Compare Vol. II. p. 109.</note> on the south of the painted hall (<hi rend="italic">chitra-kūṭa</hi>) at the great hippodrome gate (<hi rend="italic">periya-śeṇḍu-vāyil</hi>) in <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr</hi>, was pleased to order as follows:—</p>

· <p>(L. 4.) “(<hi rend="italic">The land of</hi>) those landholders in villages of Brāhmaṇas, in villages of Vaikhānasas, and in villages of Śramaṇas (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> Jainas) in <hi rend="bold">Śōṇāḍu</hi>, in the adjacent districts included in <hi rend="bold">Śōṇāḍu</hi>, in <hi rend="bold">Toṇḍai-nāḍu</hi>, and in <hi rend="bold">Pānḍi-nāḍu</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-vaḷanāḍu</hi>,<note>See Vol. II. p. 320, note 3.</note> who have not paid, on the land owned by them, the taxes due from villages, along with the (<hi rend="italic">other</hi>) inhabitants of those villages, for three years, (<hi rend="italic">of which</hi>) two are completed, between the 16th and the 23rd years (<hi rend="italic">of my reign</hi>), shall become the property of the village and shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the (<hi rend="italic">defaulting</hi>) landholders. Also, (<hi rend="italic">the land of</hi>) those who have not paid the taxes due from villages for three years, (<hi rend="italic">of which</hi>) two are completed, from the 24th year (<hi rend="italic">of my reign</hi>), shall be liable to be sold by the inhabitants of those villages to the exclusion of the (<hi rend="italic">defaulting</hi>) landholders.”</p>
