35 <p>This inscription is dated in the 13th year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja-Kēsarivarman</hi>. The king receives the epithet “who destroyed the ships at <hi rend="bold">Śālai</hi>,” and must be identified accordingly with the great <hi rend="bold">Chōḷa</hi> king <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja</hi> I., who ascended the throne in A.D. 984-85.<note>See <hi rend="italic">Ind. · <p>The inscription records that a certain <hi rend="bold">Nārāyaṇa Rājasiṁha</hi>, a native of the <hi rend="bold">Chōḷa</hi> country, purchased 550 <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> of land, and made them over to the assembly of the village, under the condition that their produce should be utilised for supplying the god with 4 <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> of rice daily.</p>

Vol. III. p. 278.</note> is expressed by a slightly curved dash, which is placed over the letter and resembles the superscribed <foreign>r</foreign> of <foreign>va<hi rend="grantha">rma</hi>ṟku</foreign> (l. 1). The <foreign>virāma</foreign> occurs six times, <hi rend="italic">viz.</hi> over <foreign>ṉ</foreign> of <foreign>taṉ kūṟṟu</foreign> (l. 1), <foreign>ṉ</foreign> of <foreign><hi rend="grantha">krama</hi>vittaṉ</foreign> and <foreign>m</foreign> of <foreign>iṟai<hi rend="grantha">dravya</hi>m</foreign> (l. 5), <foreign><hi rend="grantha">n·</hi></foreign> of <foreign><hi rend="grantha">madhyasthan·</hi></foreign>, <foreign>ṉ</foreign> of <foreign>nālāyiravaṉ</foreign>, and <foreign>ṉ</foreign> of <foreign>makaṉ</foreign> (l. 6).</p>
