35 <p>The subjoined inscription records that the goldsmiths of Tanjore were exempted from taxes by the <hi rend="bold">Nāyaka</hi> chief <hi rend="bold">Achyutappa-Nāyaka</hi>, son of <hi rend="bold">Śevvappa-Nāyaka</hi> of Tanjore. It is dated in Śaka-Saṁvat 1499 expired, the cyclic year Bahudhānya corresponding apparently to A.D. 1578-79. <hi rend="bold">Achyutappa-Nāyaka</hi> was a feudatory of the <hi rend="bold">Vijayanagara</hi> king <hi rend="bold">Veṅkaṭa</hi> I. The influence of the Tanjore Nāyakas extended at one time as far as <hi rend="bold">Tiruvaṇṇāmalai</hi> in the South Arcot District.<note>See my <hi rend="italic">Annual Report</hi> on Epigraphy for 1904-05, Part II, paragraphs 37 and 38.</note> </p>

105 <p>On the auspicious occasion of the <hi rend="italic">prathamadvādaśī</hi><note><hi rend="italic">Prathamadvādaśī</hi> is perhaps meant to denote the twelfth of the bright half of the month <hi rend="italic">Āshāḍha</hi>, on which day the <hi rend="italic">Chāturmāsyavrata</hi> commences; see <hi rend="italic">Ind. Ant</hi>. Vol. XXVI. p. 181.</note> , a Monday (<hi rend="italic">corresponding to</hi>) the 1[8]th solar day of the month of Āṉi in the year <hi rend="bold">Bahudhānya</hi>, which was current after (<hi rend="italic">the expiry of</hi>) the Śaka year 1499—(<hi rend="italic">the following is</hi>) the charter (<hi rend="italic">conveying</hi>) a lawful edict given by <hi rend="bold">Achyutappa-Nāyakkar Ayyaṉ</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">son of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Śevvappa-Nāyakkar Ayyaṉ</hi> to the goldsmiths of <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr</hi>. At the request of <hi rend="bold">Kandanōlu Nāraya Kurunādaṉ</hi> (and) <hi rend="bold">Śiṅgappaḷḷi Nāgabatta Śēshāstiri</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> perhaps <hi rend="bold">Śēshādri</hi>), your taxes (<hi rend="italic">iṟai</hi>) have been caused to be remitted, and (<hi rend="italic">this</hi>) shall continue as long as the moon and the sun (endure) as a remission of all taxes (<hi rend="italic">sarvamānya</hi>). One who obstructs this charity shall incur the sin of having killed tawny cows on the bank of the Ganges. One who obstructs this charity shall incur the sin of having pulled out a thousand <hi rend="italic">liṅgas</hi>.</p>
