<head>Provenance</head>

<p>Discovered in two pieces near the village of Tlahap, “by milestone 28” (bij paal 28) from Magelang, then subsequently moved to the house of the controlleur in Magelang. Already in 1891 it was “now apparently lost” (nu zoo het schijnt verloren, Verbeek 1891: no. 235).</p>

<p>A rubbing of the inscription is mentioned in NBG (1869) as belonging to the collection of R. Friederich.</p>

<p>An earthquake on 23 April 1866 revealed a set of 89 stone stairs in the village of Tlahap, which was the subject of reports in NBG 4 (1866): 184, 209, 232. and TBG 16 (1867): 471–474. The connection between these stairs and the discovery of the Telahap inscription is unclear; it was reported that the excavation of the stairs revealed “no other object besides a knife (bandol) and a lump of iron” [zijnde overigens geene andere voorwerpen gevonden dan een mes (bandol) en een klomp ijzer], NBG 4 (1866): 209.</p>
