Translation by Emmanuel Francis

(01–02) Homage to Śiva. Prosperity! Fortune!

(1–3) 36th year of the king Parakesarivarman, who took Maturai.

(4–11) For the Lord (āḷvār) [of] the glorious Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai [in] Cāttaṉūr, [which is] a brahmadeya in the Tiraimūrnāṭu on the southern bank, [there is] a land that I, Tāyaṅ Kaṭaṉ, lord of Vīramāṅkuṭi in the Mīraikkūṟṟam, a servant of him1, obtained tax-free from (iṭai) the members of the assembly [of] Ciṟupuliyūr, and a land, made tax-fee, obtained [in] Ciṟṟāṉaiccūr.

(12–27) The boundaries of [these] lands, made tax-free, after obtaining [from me] the gold deposited with (iṭaiyum?) the members of the assembly of these two [villages], so as to take care of the taxes (iṟai kāppat’ āka2), as long as the moon, are [as follows]:

  • the eastern boundary is to the west of the sand dunes (maṇal-īṭu) [of] this god and to the land [of] the god of the Āditya-gṛha (ātitta-karam)3 of this god;
  • the southern boundary is to the north of the Kaṭampaṉ channel which he (ivaṉē4) has given (iṭṭa5) after digging (kalli) within the land, which he obtained tax-free from (iṭai) the inhabitants of Ciṟṟāṉaiccūr (ciṟṟāṉaiccūrār6);
  • the western boundary is to the east of the land which, after purchase (vilai koṇṭu), he had dug (kalluvitta7), for feeding, in front of the god,8 the Brahmins who are the matchlessly (taṉi) expert in the (Uttama)-Sāmaveda in the Veḷḷāṟu (veḷḷ¿a?⟨ā⟩(ṟu)?) [area] for the Lord of Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai;
  • the northern boundary is to the south of the departing (?) (pērum) great/main road, of the sand dunes (maṇal-īṭu) [of] the god and of the glorious flower garden [named] Civapaṭu.

(27–33) Comprised within these four boundaries, [there are] sylvan tracts (kollai), dry-land (puṉ-cey), wet-land (nīr-nilam), bordering on the south, which he had dug (kalluvitta), as well as the vāy (vāyum) [of] Paḻam Kaṭampaṉ, already dug (?) (kalliṉa9), and dry-land and sylvan tracts, already dug (?) (kalliṉa), on both banks [of] this channel.

(34–36) [There are] two quarters [of a vēli] of wet-land (mayakkiṉa), bordering on the south in the land (mayakkiṉa), after digging (kalli) in these two lands.

(36–51) [Comprised] within these two quarters [of a vēli], a patiyam, bordering on the west, [is provisioned as follows]:10

  • six s, so that two singers sing (pāṭa) [at] two cantis for the Lord of Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai;
  • four s, west of this, for two persons who splash (iṟaippār) water (tiruttam) [in] the glorious flower garden;
  • two , west of this, for two celestial(s), who, after plucking (paṟittu), tighten (ceṟippār) glorious flower garlands;
  • and, as for food (pōṉakam) to be measured (?) (nāṭa) on a daily basis (nicatip paṭi), eight s, east of the land, which the Lord of the glorious temple obtained, for having food-offerings made, (pattoṭṭu) for daily food [consisting in] four nāḻis of husked and seasoned paddy, [one] large (?) (paruppu) uri of lentil food-offering, one piṭi of butter food-offering, [one] uri of curd food-offering, [one] cooked food-offering, and four areca-nut food-offerings.

(51–55) East of this, with ... [from] the ..., so as to ... [there is] one vēli [from] this ...,

(55–56) ...

(56–61) So that the attendants of Rudra (uruttira-p-perumakkaḷ), the many great devotees of Śiva and the descendants of Tayaṉ Kaṭaṉ ... they should appoint a pontiff ...

(61–80) So that there be (āka), after having these fifty-two pots measured (aḷappittu) with the superintendant (kaṇkāṇi) on days when glorious festivals are undertaken

  • starting with the Mūlam festival, what is necessary to cook (aṭak kaṭava) [are] one patakku for the Śivayogins ... and one tūṇi of paddy ...
  • at the time of Pūrāṭatti ...
  • at the time of Uttirāṭatti ...
  • at the time of Tiruvōṇam ...
  • at the time of Aviṭṭam ...
  • at the time of Cataiyam ...
  • at the time of Pūraṭṭāti ...
  • ...
(there are) fifty-two pots of paddy.

(80–86) ...

(86–101) ...

(101–103) ...

(103–110) ...

(110–114) ...

(114–121) ...

(121–129) ...

(129–135) ...

(136) This pious donation [is under] the protection of the the many great devotees of Śiva.

(136–138) The dust on the glorious feet of he who protects this pious donation are on my head.

(138–139) [There is] a land that Tāyaṅ Kāṭaṉ obtained tax-free from the members of the assembly.

(139–140) For this land ten pots of paddy are to be provided.

(141–142) We are appointed to provide these ten pots; we have obtained two gold coins, we the lords of the glorious temple of Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai.

Notes

  1. 1. That is, the Lord of Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai.
  2. 2. That is, to secure the payment of taxes with the capital interest.
  3. 3. This possibly refers to be the present-day Cūriyaṉār Kōyil in the village of same name, in the Tanjore district, less than 10 km west of Tiruvavāṭutuṟai.
  4. 4. That is, Kaṭampaṉ or the donor, Tāyaṅ Kaṭaṉ.
  5. 5. Literally, put.
  6. 6. That is, the ūrārs of Ciṟṟāṉaiccūr?
  7. 7. That is, dug and thus made fit for cultivation?
  8. 8. This phrase appears to mean that the Sāmaveda reciters are fed in front of the god.
  9. 9. That is, already fit for cultivation.
  10. 10. Two quarters vēli, that is half a vēli, make 20 s, which are distributed as follows: 6 + 4 + 2 + 8 s.
