Translation by Jens Thomas

Svasti! Bhuvaṇa Triṇētra, the glorious Vaidumba Mahārāja, whose broad bosom is embraced by the goddess of fortune of war whom he took hold of in numerous battle encounters, was inaugurated into rulership over the world in the 894th year in Śaka year (calculation).

Commentary

The text follows the edition of J. Ramayya Pantulu (1948, pp. 341–342, № 636) in absence of a picture. The single editorial change was made on grounds of the occurence of the usual collocation. In regard to the date given in lines 6-7 J. Ramayya Pantulu notes that “After the figure 8 in line 6 there is a curved line. It is presumed to be an accidental stroke not intended to represent any figure.” (Ramayya Pantulu 1948, p. 342). The spelling °paṭṭabhadduṇḍ in line 8 is a misspelling for °paṭṭabaddhuṇḍ lit. ’he whose frontlet is bound’ -> ’inaugurated into rulership’. This collocation also appears in the Talagunda inscription as paṭṭabandha° (Kielhorn 1905–1906, p. 32) and as loan translation into Telugu (paṭṭam-gaṭṭu and similar spellings).

Bibliography

The inscription was noted in A. R. No. 325 of 1905 and first published by J. Ramayya Pantulu in 1948, pp. 341–342, № 636 with few metadata and without translation. On the basis of this edition K. M. Sastri re-edited the text together with a translation (1969, pp. 322–323, № 49).
