Commentary

The text of face B follows the edition of J. Ramayya Pantulu (Ramayya Pantulu 1948, p. 333, № 607) because face B is labelled as damaged by Nilakanta Sastri and Venkataramayya and not represented by a picture in their edition. Furthermore, the first line on the stone is omitted in Ramayya Pantulu’s edition so that the line numbering does not match. This discrepancy was levelled out in the apparatus. In line 5 the reading Ēḷa(N) with halanta provides a grammatically correct form although there does not seem any graphemic indication for the vowel elision. Lines 11-16 have not been read in 1948, p. 333, № 607.

Bibliography

The inscription was noted in the Annual Report and first published by J. Ramayya Pantulu (1948, p. 333, № 607) without translation. It was edited anew by K. A. Nilakanta Sastri and M. Venkataramayya ([1956] 1947–1948, pp. 221–225, № 42 A) with annotations and a picture of face A. K. M. Sastri, while relying on the edition in EI, provides a summary of the content: “The inscription seems to record a grant by a certain Cenūrukāju and the people of the village of Aḻikaḷā at the instance of Rēvaṇakālu of Ciṟumbūru when Erikal-Muturāju Dhanaṁjaya was ruling Rēnāṇḍu.” (Sastri 1969, p. 282)
