Translation

⟨1⟩ Prosperity! Fortune!

⟨1⟩ This is the sixth year of king Vīrarājendra (Kulottuṅga III).

⟨2–6⟩ I, Koṭumpuṉavantēvaṉ Aṭavallaṉ Nampi, have set up the guardian deity (kṣetrapāla piḷḷai) for the god Nalla-nāyaṉār of Nallūr, built the shrine (kōyilum eṭuppitu), and endowed a quarter of wet-land in Aivarputukkuṭi2 for the sacred lamp (tiruviḷakku) and for the food offering (tiruvamutu paṭi) in the temple of the Lord Nalla-nāyaṉār.

⟨6–11⟩ We, the residents of Koṭumpuṉavam,3

  • Koṭumpuṉavaṉ Ciṅkantēvar Ciriya Malaiyamāṉ,

  • Paṭaiyaṉ Ceyaṅkoṇṭa Malaiyamāṉ,

  • Tēvatirucciṟṟampala Malaiyamāṉ,

  • Amattai Kūvāṉ, and

  • Paṭiyaṉ Nāṭaṉ,

have given this village (itu ivvūr) after we, such people (ivv-aṉaivōm), poured water on the holy feet of the deity (piḷḷai).

⟨11–12⟩ Whoever alters this (itu māṟuvāṉ) will become the husband of his own mother (ammaikku tāṉē).4

⟨12⟩ This is the oath (cattiyam) of Vallavaraiyaṉ.

This will be under the protection of the Śaiva devotees as long as the sun and the moon remain.

Notes

  1. 1. Line 8 is covered by cement. Reading from ASI transcript

  2. 2. Aivatukuṭi is an adjacent village that is situated to the north of Nallūr.

  3. 3. We have not been able to identify the village referred to in this record. However, some 30km. east, also on the Manimuktha river, lies the present-day village of Koṭumaṉūr, probably the best candidate for Koṭumpuṉavan.

  4. 4. Same imprecation appears in INSTamilNadu00031.
