35 <p>The record states that in the 5th year of king <hi rend="bold">Pārthivēndravarman</hi> a certain <hi rend="bold">Nīlakaṇḍaraiyaṉ Aṇṇāvaṉ Nāṭṭaḍigaḷ</hi> gave, on the occasion of a solar eclipse, 1 1/2 <hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi> of land to the god <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Taṇakkamalai</hi> for conducting <hi rend="italic">śrībali</hi>, on behalf of <hi rend="bold">Nīlagaṅgaraiyaṉ Aṇṇāvaṉ Nāṭṭaḍigal</hi> who was perhaps his brother. <hi rend="italic">Śrībali</hi> is a ceremony performed by sounding drums and throwing cooked rice and flowers all round the temple. The inscription provides for five men to sound the different musical instruments used on the occasion.</p>

· <p>Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 5th year of king <hi rend="bold">Pārthivēndravarman</hi>, at the request of the residents of <hi rend="bold">Mīyvaḻi-Tāyaṉūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Śiṅgapura-nāḍu</hi>, I, the glorious <hi rend="bold">Nīlakaṇḍaraiyaṉ Aṇṇāvaṉ Nāṭṭadigaḷ</hi><note>This name is unnecessarily repeated in the Tamil text in l. 4.</note> gave, for (<hi rend="italic">the merit of</hi>) the glorious <hi rend="bold">Nīlagaṅgaraiyaṉ Aṇṇāvaṉ Nāṭṭaḍigaḷ</hi> on the occasion of a solar eclipse and to last as long as the moon and sun, to the god <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Śiva</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Taṇakkamalai</hi> one <hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi> of land in (<hi rend="italic">the field called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Teṉkāṟpaṭṭi</hi> of this village and half (<hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi>) of land including the western division, in <hi rend="bold">Tarippaṭṭi</hi>, as a <hi rend="italic">śrībali-bhōga</hi> (in order that the (<hi rend="italic">śrībali</hi>) may be sounded by five men. <hi rend="bold">Tīraṉ Mūdaiyaṉ</hi>, the chief of <hi rend="bold">Mērkuḍi</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Umbaḷa-nāḍu</hi> and his younger brother <hi rend="bold">Tīraṉ Ulagaḍigaḷ</hi> paid gold to the residents (<hi rend="italic">of the village</hi>), took complete possession by purchase of this 1(1/2) <hi rend="italic">paṭṭi</hi> of land and had it made tax-free. We two, <hi rend="bold">Tīraṉ Mūdaiyaṉ</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Tīraṉ Ulagaḍigaḷ</hi> carried out the <hi rend="italic">śrībali-bhōga</hi> in the manner (<hi rend="italic">described</hi>). This (<hi rend="italic">charity</hi>) shall be under the protection of all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi>.</p>
