85 <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 3rd year of (<hi rend="italic">the reign of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pārthivēndrādhipativarman</hi> who took the head of <hi rend="bold">Vīra-Pāṇḍya</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">this is</hi>) the writing of us (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the great assembly of <hi rend="bold">Uttaramēlūr-chaṭurvēdimaṅgalam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a village</hi>) in its own subdivision in <hi rend="bold">Kāliyūr-kōṭṭam</hi>. The lands given to the <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Śiva</hi>) of the sacred temple (<hi rend="italic">śrīkōyil</hi>) on the east side<note><foreign>kiḻai <hi rend="grantha">śrī</hi>koyil</foreign> means evidently a Śiva temple in contrast to the Vishṇu temple of a village which goes by the name of <foreign>mēṟṟaḷi</foreign> or <foreign>mēlaikkōyil</foreign>. This relative position of the Śiva and Vishṇu shrines in a village temple is seen for example, in the disposition of the <hi rend="italic">liṅga</hi> and the sleeping figure of Vishṇu in the Shore Temple at Mahāseepuram [[sic for Mahābalipuram]].</note> at <hi rend="bold">Kumaṇpāḍi</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a suburb</hi>) of our village, to provide for worship and sacred offerings (<hi rend="italic">are as below):</hi>—</p>

· <p>(L. 2.) 240 <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> of first rate (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>) in the second square (<hi rend="italic">śadukkam</hi>) west of (<hi rend="italic">the path called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Viḍēlviḍugu-vadi</hi> of the sixth <hi rend="italic">kaṇṇāṟu</hi> to the south of (<hi rend="italic">the path called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Vayiramēga-vadi</hi>; 415 <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> of first rate (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>) in the eighth square (<hi rend="italic">śadukkam</hi>), east of (<hi rend="italic">the path called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Māṟapiḍugu-vadi</hi> of the sixteenth <hi rend="italic">kannāṟu (situated</hi>) to the north of (<hi rend="italic">the lane called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Subrahmaṇya-nārāśam</hi>; 440 (<hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi>) of fourth rate (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>) in the sixth square to the east of the path which goes straight to the <hi rend="bold">Kāvaṉūr</hi> tank of the sixteenth <hi rend="italic">kaṇṇāṟu (situated</hi>) to the north of (<hi rend="italic">the lane</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Subrahmaṇya-nārāśam</hi>. In all, we gave (<hi rend="italic">these</hi>) 1,095 (<hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi>) freed of taxes, having received <hi rend="italic">pūrvāchāram</hi> from <hi rend="bold">Śandaraṉ Eḻunūṟṟuvaṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Nuḷamba Māyilaṭṭi</hi>. We (<hi rend="italic">also</hi>) decreed them tax-free agreeing not to exact <hi rend="italic">iṟai, echchōṟu, veṭṭi</hi> and <hi rend="italic">amañji</hi>.</p>

· <p>(L. 6.) Those who obstruct this (<hi rend="italic">deed</hi>) shall incur the sin committed (<hi rend="italic">by the sinners</hi>) between <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi> (the Ganges) and <hi rend="bold">Kumari</hi> (Cape Comorin) and shall pay a fine of 25 <hi rend="italic">kaḻañju</hi> of gold at the court of justice (<hi rend="italic">danmādana, dharmāsana</hi>). I, <hi rend="bold">Puliya-Śivaṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi><note>The name that follows begins with the numerals 1,200 which evidently stand for Āyirattirunūṟṟu[vaṉ], a sort of family-name or surname.</note> . . . . . . wrote (this) by order of the great assembly I . . . . . . . . . wrote (this) . . . . by order of . . . assembly.</p>
