35 <p>This inscription contains an order of a king who bore the titles <hi rend="italic">Tribhuvanachakravartin</hi> <hi rend="bold">Kōnēriṉmaikoṇḍāṉ</hi>.<note>See above, p. 44, note 8.</note> He granted certain privileges to the artizans (<hi rend="italic">Kaṇmāḷar</hi>) of the district of <hi rend="bold">Veṅgāla-nāḍu</hi>,—to take effect from the month of Āḍi of the 15th year of his reign.</p>

· <p>An almost identical duplicate of this inscription (No. 562 of 1893) is engraved on the central shrine of the Gōshṭhīśvara temple at <hi rend="bold">Pērūr</hi> near Coimbatore. It differs chiefly in being addressed to the <hi rend="italic">Kaṇmāḷar</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Southern Koṅgu</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Teṉ-Koṅgu</hi>) and in the king's bearing the title <hi rend="bold">Kōṉērimēlkoṇḍāṉ</hi> instead of Kōnēriṉmaikoṇḍāṉ.</p>

75 <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! The emperor of the three worlds, the glorious <hi rend="bold">Kōnēriṉmaikoṇḍāṉ</hi> (<hi rend="italic">addresses the following order</hi>) to the <hi rend="italic">Kaṇmāḷar</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Veṅgāla-nāḍu</hi>.</p>

· <p>“We have ordered that, from the month of Āḍi of the 15th (<hi rend="italic">year of our reign</hi>), at your marriages and funerals, double conches may be blown and drums, etc., beaten, that sandals may be worn (<hi rend="italic">on the way</hi>) to places which you have to visit, and that your houses may be covered with plaster. On the authority of this written order (<hi rend="italic">ōlai</hi>), this may be engraved on stone and on copper in (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) places desired by you, so as to last as long as the moon and the sun.”</p>
