35 <p>This inscription is dated during the reign of <hi rend="bold">Vīrapratāpa-Devarāya-mahārāja</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi> Vijayanagara) and in the <hi rend="italic">Viśvāvasu</hi> year, which was current after the expiration of the Śaka year 1347. It refers to a question of the sacred law (<hi rend="italic">dharma</hi>) of the <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi>, which was settled by the <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi> of the kingdom of <hi rend="bold">Paḍaivīḍu</hi>, among whom <hi rend="bold">Karṇāṭa, Tamiṛ, Telugu</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Lāṭa</hi> <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi> are mentioned. Their representatives signed an agreement to the effect, that henceforth marriages among their families had only to be concluded by <hi rend="italic">kanyādāna</hi>, i.e., that the father had to give his daughter to the bridegroom gratuitously. Both the father who accepted money, and the bridegroom who paid money for the bride, should be subject to punishment by the king and to excommunication from their caste. This practice was evidently adopted on the authority of the canonical works on sacred law, which condemn in strong terms the payment of money for the bride, and use the term <hi rend="italic">āsura-vivāha</hi> for a marriage thus concluded. The four forms of marriage permitted to <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi> are mere varieties of the marriage by <hi rend="italic">kanyādāna</hi>.</p>
·
· <p>To the end of the inscription a large number of signatures of <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi> are attached. This part of the original is obliterated to such an extent that a satisfactory transcript cannot be given. In some cases, the places where the single <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇas</hi> came from, are registered. As the identification of these localities might be useful for fixing the extent of the kingdom of <hi rend="bold">Paḍaivīḍu</hi>, I subjoin those which may be read with certainty: <hi rend="bold">Kaḷañjiyam, Kamalapādam, Marudam, Maṅgalam, Araiyapāḍi, Kaṇṇamaṅgalam,<note>This village is situated in the Ārṇi Jāgīr, about half-way between Ārṇi and Vellore; it is spelt “Kunnamangalam” in the official <hi rend="italic">List of Indian Post Offices</hi>, Calcutta, 1886.</note> A[ga]tterippaṭṭu, Enādapāḍi</hi>. Two other inscriptions mention <hi rend="bold">Guḍiyātam</hi><note>Head-quarters of a tālluqa of the North Arcot District.</note> and <hi rend="bold">Vallam</hi><note>In the Vandavāśi Tālluqa of the same district.</note> as belonging to the kingdom of <hi rend="bold">Paḍavīḍu</hi><note><hi rend="italic">Ind. Lee Warner, the Collector of Chingleput.</note> or <hi rend="bold">Paḍaveḍu</hi>.<note>Sewell's <hi rend="italic">Lists of Antiquities</hi>, Vol. I, p. 170.</note> The kingdom of <hi rend="bold">Paḍaivīḍu</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Paḍaivīṭṭu rājyam</hi>) was called after the town of <hi rend="bold">Paḍaivīḍu</hi>, now <hi rend="bold">Paḍaveḍu</hi> in the Polūr Tālluqa of the North Arcot District.<note><hi rend="italic">Ibid.</hi>, p. 169.</note> According to two <hi rend="bold">Vijayanagara</hi> inscriptions, it formed a district of <hi rend="bold">Toṇḍai-maṇḍalam</hi>.<note>The Paḍaveḍu inscription No. <ref target="DHARMA_INSSIIv01p0i0081">81</ref> mentions <hi rend="italic">Toṇḍai-maṇḍalattu Paḍaivīṭṭu rājyam</hi>. According to the Koṇḍyāta grant (<hi rend="italic">Ind. Ant</hi>., Vol. XIII, p. 132) the <hi rend="italic">Paḍavīḍu-mahārājya</hi> belonged to the <hi rend="italic">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Toṇḍamaṇḍala</hi>.</note> The name <hi rend="bold">Paḍaivīḍu</hi> means “an encampment” and seems to owe its origin to a temporary camp of some king, around which a city arose in course of time.<note>Thus the present residence of the Sindhia at the foot of the Gwalior Fort still bears the name of Lashkar, i.e., “camp.”</note></p>
