Translation

⟨1⟩ Fortune!

⟨1–2⟩ Fourteenth year of Nantippōttaraicar.1

⟨2–6⟩ The pious donation (aṟam) that Antai Iḷaiyār Appananti, ⟨of this⟩ village, gave for the ascetics who reside ⟨here⟩, excluding those belonging (uṭai) to this paḷḷi: seven kaḻañcus of gold, ⟨as⟩ alms (piccai).

⟨7–8⟩ With one/per kaḻañcu, one uḻakku of rice … muṉ kuṟaṭṭi is to be given/provided (vaittatu).

⟨9–⟩ This pious donation, We, the members of the ūr, shall protect, … (oṭṭiṉōṅ).

As the sin of ruining the Kāmakkōṭṭam, … (Oṭṭiṟ = oṭṭiṉ/oṭṭil?).

Daily, one uḻakku of rice … (muṭṭiṟ = muṭṭiṉ/muṭṭil?).

To the king daily one kāṭi(neṟṟaṇṭam).

⟨13⟩ This gold is not to befall (paṭātu2) to the lineage of goldsmiths (ṟaṭṭārkkulam).

Commentary

⟨6⟩ appaṇanti. IP: “May be read as Iḷaiyār Bavanandi.” But not granted: there might have been one Appananti and one Pavananti.

Notes

  1. 1. Sanskrit Nandin + Tamil Pōttaraicar. That is, the Pallava king Nandin.

  2. 2. Literally: to happen.
