55 <p>The palaeography of this inscription was commented on at length by L.-Ch. Damais (<bibl rend="omitname"><ptr target="bib:Damais1955_01"/></bibl> and <bibl rend="omitname"><ptr target="bib:Damais1965_01"/></bibl>). It seems uncertain whether Damais was right to identify <foreign>ḍh</foreign> in 1v1; he was certainly not right when he suggested that unaspirated <foreign>ḍ</foreign> is common in the inscription. The <foreign>cecak</foreign> is sometimes so large as to resemble <foreign>ulu</foreign> (e.g., 2r1 <foreign>sovaṁ</foreign>).
· <p>Damais did not comment on the following points. (1) Although several cases of <foreign>ḍ</foreign> are found (<foreign>paḍaṁ</foreign>, <foreign>mapaḍahi</foreign>, <foreign>saṇḍaṁ</foreign>, etc.), it is remarkable that the expected <foreign>pasangan</foreign> <foreign>ḍ</foreign> is consistently realized as <foreign>d</foreign> in the words <foreign>vḍihan</foreign> and <foreign>piṇḍa</foreign>. (2) The basic punctuation sign takes the shape of a raised circle. (3) The scribe has a proclivity for <foreign>ś</foreign> where <foreign>s</foreign> or <foreign>ṣ</foreign> are expected: see the consistent spelling <foreign>śuśuk</foreign> and the spelling <foreign>sākśī</foreign>.</p>
