Commentary

Wisseman Christie claimed that this text is “[a] relatively brief follow-up document appended to a sīma grant made by Balitung involving the wanua of Ayam Teas (the original charter for which has been lost)” and that “[t]his addition to the charter [...] appears to have been issued at the same time or shortly after the original charter.” It is true that the sīma was already in existence when this inscription was issued, and that it adds prescriptions that were probably not already in place. However, there is no positive evidence for the existence of a lost founding charter, nor that Balitung was the issuer of any such charter.

It is important to note that Ayam Teas is not the name of a single village, but rather, the name of a vatak containing several villages and governed by a pamgat (see Mantyasih I 1v13, Kasugihan 1v3–5). This is clearly expressed in the wording “each of the freehold villages in Ayam Teas” (soĀraniṁ va_nuA sima I Ayam təAs·, 1r6–7).
