· <p rend="stanza" n="5">Puisse l'image de Parameśvara-Śārṅgin <supplied reason="explanation">Hari-Hara</supplied>, qui permet de distinguer par leur contiguïté l'éclat inhérent à chacun d'eux, procurer le succès, de même que la Gaṅgā <supplied reason="subaudible">obtient le succès</supplied> lorsqu'elle s'unit à la Yamunā, en enlevant à sa rivale Ambikā sa part <supplied reason="subaudible">de leur époux commun</supplied> à qui celle-ci était <supplied reason="subaudible">précédemment</supplied> unie.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="6">Je vénère les deux Bhava <supplied reason="explanation">Śiva et Umā</supplied>, cause de l'univers, réunis en un seul corps, mais divisés en de multiples conditions comme l'avyakta et la buddhi, menant comme les deux chemins du Dharma <supplied reason="subaudible"/> au ciel et à la délivrance, plaisant au cœur, brillant comme la montagne d'or et la montagne de neige réunis.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="7">J'invoque Gaurī : bien qu'au moment où dans sa colère l'Archer au Pinaka <supplied reason="explanation">Śiva</supplied> brûla Madana <supplied reason="explanation">l'Amour</supplied>, elle ait fermé les yeux de crainte et ait vu la sueur perler à chacun des poils de son corps, et qu'elle ait été comme transpercée de cent flèches, elle resplendit encore.</p>
400 <p rend="stanza" n="8">J'adore les deux lotus des pieds de Vāgīśvarī, poussés dans le lac de l'esprit des sages, colorés <seg rend="pun">ou: provoquant la passion</seg>, émettant de leurs ongles des rayons, comme s'ils étaient illuminés par l'éclat combiné des rubis que portent sur leurs diadèmes les troupes des Immortels inclinés.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="9">Victorieuse est la Gaṅgā, dont la masse faite de gouttes étincelantes et pures, tombe du ciel où le croissant de la lune projette ses cornes, et produit en brisant les volutes de ses vagues un jaillissement d'étoiles, comme si s'était rompu un collier de brillantes pierreries.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="10">Que Lakṣmī écarte le mal de vos esprits, comme dans l'espace du corps de son époux aux formes multiples, Elle dont l'unique qualité de beauté occupe complètement l'univers, - à quoi bon parler de ses autres qualités ?</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="11">Honorez Kambu Svāyambhuva dont la gloire <supplied reason="subaudible">comme un astre</supplied> s'est levée à l'horizon, et dont la bonne lignée, ayant obtenu la conjonction de la race solaire avec la race lunaire, écarte de tous les śāstra l'ignorance <seg rend="pun">ou: les ténèbres</seg>, répand sa puissance <seg rend="pun">ou: son éclat</seg>, lève des impôts légers <seg rend="pun">ou: des rayons doux</seg>, et est accomplie dans tous les arts <seg rend="pun">ou: a ses kalā au complet</seg>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="12">J'implore Merā, la plus illustre des femmes célestes, que Hara, guru des trois mondes, très désireux de surpasser au bénéfice de ses trois yeux la procréation de Dakṣa, a donnée d'en haut du ciel comme reine au maharṣi.</p>
405 <p rend="stanza" n="13">Ceux qui portent le fardeau de la terre de Śrī Kambu <seg rend="pun">ou: le fardeau de la terre, de la conque et de Śrī</seg>, qui ont Śrutavarman pour racine <seg rend="pun">ou: la naissance <supplied reason="subaudible">du bras</supplied> protégée par une cuirasse fameuse</seg>, qui s'enorgueillissent d'avoir à'l'origine rompu les liens du tribut <seg rend="pun">ou: du démon Bali</seg>, qui prennent leur plaisir dans le Bien <seg rend="pun">ou: ayant avec eux l'épée Nandaka</seg>, qui montrent leur héroïsme tout en manifestant leur bel aspect <seg rend="pun">ou: par le <supplied reason="subaudible">disque</supplied> Sudarśana</seg>, brillent comme les longs bras de Hari incarnés.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="14">S'étant approchés d'eux comme de la terre élevée et lointaine du mont Rohana, les <supplied reason="subaudible">autres</supplied> rois semblables à des joailliers façonnèrent le joyau de la vertu de Bien jailli bruyamment du nuage de leur gloire, a l'intention du teint pur de la Fortune, fidèle favorite <supplied reason="subaudible">des rois Śrutavarman, etc.</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="15">C'est parce qu'il avait vu leur héroïsme enflammé, épandant sa chaleur dans tout l'univers et occupé sans cesse à réduire la chaude énergie de leurs ennemis, que le'feu Aurva, comme saisi de frayeur, est allé au milieu de l'océan profond, dans le désir de s'y cacher.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="16">Ensuite apparurent les rois dont le premier fut Śrī Rudravarman, tirant leur origine de Śrī Kauṇḍinya et de la fille de Soma, répandant dans les trois mondes l'éclat de leur gloire, habiles à gouverner leurs sujets, possédant la Śruti.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="17">Comme s'ils avaient craint que l'éclat de leur puissance aussi ardente qu'un millier de soleils, ne fît fondre la sphère de l'œuf de Brahmā, les disques de ces lunes brillantes que sont leurs gloires perpétuelles, rafraîchissent de toute part l'espace des points cardinaux.</p>
410 <p rend="stanza" n="18">"Ce n'est pas seulement avec l'indolent Amour <supplied reason="subaudible">qu'elle s'unit</supplied>", ainsi pensait le monde où la Beauté était venue se faire l'objet de tous les regards <supplied reason="subaudible">en la personne de ces rois</supplied> ; c'est ainsi que ceux-ci brillèrent, aussi bien par leur puissant éclat qui desséchait et affolait de tous les égarements <supplied reason="subaudible">de l'Amour</supplied>, que par leurs exploits dans le combat.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="19">Dans cette lignée naquit le fortuné et très glorieux Jayavarman, qui établit sa résidence sur le sommet du Mahendra, qui vainquit par un koṭihoma le dieu aux cent sacrifices <supplied reason="explanation">Indra</supplied>, et dont le tabouret était devenu la pierre de touche des diadèmes royaux.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="20">Portant la terre de Śrī Kambu <seg rend="pun">ou: la terre, la conque et Śrī</seg>, protecteur et ornement de la race solaire <seg rend="pun">ou : gardien des vaches folâtres de noble race</seg>, augmentant la prospérité de la terre <seg rend="pun">ou: soulevant le mont Govardhana</seg>, désastreux pour l'enfer <seg rend="pun">ou: pour <supplied reason="subaudible">l'Asura</supplied> Naraka</seg>, victorieux, vainqueur des flatteurs <seg rend="pun">ou: du serpent</seg>, ennemi des adversaires de la Loi <seg rend="pun">ou: ennemi de Kaṁsa <supplied reason="explanation">ou de Vr̥ṣabha</supplied></seg>, trésor de beauté <gap reason="lost"/>, il avait l'éclat du dieu aux yeux de lotus <supplied reason="explanation">Viṣṇu</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="21">Il produisit à la fois : par les <supplied reason="subaudible">fumées</supplied> issues de ses innombrables sacrifices, l'obscurcissement de la gloire et du ciel <supplied reason="subaudible">d'Indra</supplied> aux cent sacrifices ; par le sang répandu dans les combats, le rougissement <supplied reason="subaudible">de honte</supplied> de la Fortune de ses ennemis et de la liane de son épée ; par sa magnificence, l'éclat radieux des orients et de ses amis.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="22">Son fils victorieux, possédant une Fortune invaincue <seg rend="pun">ou: la fortune de Viṣṇu</seg>, vainqueur de ses ennemis, nommé Śrī Jayavarman, était, comme par suite de son affection pour les vieillards, passionné pour la science antique, et <supplied reason="subaudible">bien que</supplied> jeune, sans passion pour la jeune Śrī.</p>
415 <p rend="stanza" n="23">Grand politique, éducateur habile, il conduisait au mérite et à la fortune ses sujets dépourvus de mérite et de fortune, en les modifiant adroitement, comme un connaisseur des gradations qui désire réaliser la pureté <seg rend="pun">ou : Doué de méthode, maître habile, il appliquait le guṇa et la vr̥ddhi à une forme primitive dépourvue de guṇa et de vr̥ddhi, en la modifiant avec justesse, comme un connaisseur des divers degrés, désireux d'employer <supplied reason="subaudible">la racine</supplied> <foreign>mr̥j</foreign> <supplied reason="subaudible">"purifier"</supplied></seg>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="24">Son oncle maternel, semblable à Indra, eut grâce à sa bonne fortune un fils nommé Śrī Indravarman qui, bien qu'établi sur la terre avec le titre d'Indra des hommes, obtint pour longtemps les jouissances <supplied reason="subaudible">célestes</supplied> du séjour d'Indra.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="25">Lorsqu'il monta sur son trône recouvert par les réseaux <supplied reason="subaudible">formés par</supplied> les rayons de leurs joyaux, les diadèmes des rois tombèrent de leurs têtes à ses pieds, comme les étoiles <supplied reason="subaudible">tombent</supplied> du ciel au lever du soleil.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="26">Sur la terre, il a placé un linga de l'époux d'Umā sous le nom de Śrī Indreśvara avec les images de Śrīdhara, Ambika et autres, et il a creusé un bassin ; dans les points cardinaux, <supplied reason="subaudible">il a placé</supplied> sa gloire flamboyante et <supplied reason="subaudible">il a miné</supplied> la force de ses ennemis.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="27">Son fils sans égal, couvert de gloire, reçut le nom de Śrī Yaśovarman et fut le maître suprême de la terre qui a pour, limites les Sūkṣma-Kāmrāta, l'océan, la Chine et le Campā.</p>
420 <p rend="stanza" n="28">"Celui qui est assis, sur le lotus <supplied reason="subaudible">Brahma</supplied> désire sans cesse orner <supplied reason="subaudible">de sa présence</supplied> le beau lotus du nombril de Celui qui a un lotus dans le nombril <supplied reason="explanation">Viṣṇu</supplied>", c'est sans doute dans cette pensée que Śambhu s'est assis pour longtemps sur ce lotus qu'est le cœur de cet homme sans égal <seg rend="pun">ou: de ce Viṣṇu</seg>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="29">Sur les cinq sommets d'un Meru, comme si c'eût été sur lès cinq sommets du mont <supplied reason="subaudible">Meru</supplied>, ainsi que dans une île du grand océan, il a établi plus de cent dieux, et il a creusé le bassin de Yaśodhara.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="30">Il eut un fils bien-aimé, Śrī Harṣavarman, qui causait la joie de l'univers, et dont les pieds étaient éclairés par la splendeur des guirlandes de rubis couvrant les diadèmes des rois des quatre points cardinaux.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="31">Agile en escrime, brillant de gloire, rigide dans la méditation, empressé au service des autres, grave dans son héroïsme, fermé au mal, bien que doué de la qualité de bonté, il possédait en excès les deux <supplied reason="subaudible">autres</supplied> qualités.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="32">Pour l'augmentation du dharma de ses parents il a, suivant la règle, érigé ici ces images d'or des deux Īśvara <supplied reason="explanation">Śiva et Umā</supplied>, et au pied de l'Indradri les images de l'ennemi de Mura <supplied reason="explanation">Viṣṇu</supplied> et de deux Devī.</p>
425 <p rend="stanza" n="33">Ensuite son frère cadet né de la même mère, Śrī Īśānavarman, victorieux, surpassant l'Amour par sa beauté, dissipant les ténèbres, possédant tous les arts <seg rend="pun">ou: toutes les <foreign>kalā</foreign></seg>, fut une lune parmi les rois.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="34">S'étant proposé comme objet de démonstration l'unité du Bien, laquelle est à la fois démontrée par la perception, la tradition et l'inférence, en bon controversiste naiyāyika qu'il était, il en a déduit comme corollaire la pluralité de l'Agréable et de l'Utile.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="35">Le mari de la sœur de son père, le très habile Śrī Jayavarman, enflammé par Śrī, fonda une ville qui par son ampleur fut le siège de la puissance des Śrī des trois mondes.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="36">"Depuis le temps qu'il porte le Créateur sur le lotus de son nombril, ce <supplied reason="subaudible">Viṣṇu</supplied> doit être fatigué", c'est comme dans cette pensée que ce roi victorieux <seg rend="pun">ou: ce Viṣṇu</seg>, laborieux <seg rend="pun">ou: portant Viṣṇu</seg>, a montré par sa puissance qu'il tenait sur son bras le dieu aux quatre bras <supplied reason="explanation">Viṣṇu</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="37">A Liṅgapura, dans un lieu éminent, il a érigé, exploit difficile! un linga de Śarva, placé à une hauteur de neuf fois neuf coudées, avec les images de Brahmā et d'autres dieux.</p>
430 <p rend="stanza" n="38">Son fils Śrī Harṣavarman, causant la créatures, vainqueur, brûlant d'héroïsme, doué d'une gloire sans égale, savant, possédait une puissance assurant l'inviolabilité à ses commandements.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="39">Dans la bataille l'épée que tenait son bras, trempée dans le sang des troupes ennemies, lui procurait la même Lakṣmī <supplied reason="subaudible">que celle</supplied> de fa grande montagne enflammée agitée dans l'océan par le dieu né sous l'essieu <supplied reason="explanation">Viṣṇu</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="40">Son frère, son aîné par l'âge et la vertu, fut le roi Śrī Rajendravarman, qui surpassait les autres rois par sa puissance royale et dont le monde chantait les vertus naissantes.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="41">Exercée par lui, la justice avait la splendeur du feu qui opère la dissolution <supplied reason="subaudible">du monde</supplied> <seg rend="pun">ou: l'analyse <supplied reason="subaudible">des éléments</supplied></seg>; établissant son séjour dans une bonne caste <seg rend="pun">ou: dans l'or</seg>, elle a raillé la puissance des rois <seg rend="pun">ou: du mercure</seg>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="42">Sa beauté charmante, réjouissant dès sa naissance un millier d'yeux, sans exception, a rabaissé la beauté de l'Amour qui a mis longtemps à exciter la colère du dieu aux trois yeux <supplied reason="subaudible">Śiva</supplied>.</p>
435 <p rend="stanza" n="43">Arrosée par le flot de l'eau de ses donations <seg rend="pun">ou: du liquide frontal</seg> comprenant des éléphants et une foule de richesses <seg rend="pun">ou: produit par une multitude 'd'éléphants</seg>, et rafraîchies par de nombreux lotus <seg rend="pun">ou: de nombreuses pointes de trompes</seg>, la liane de sa gloire enlace la rangée d'arbres de l'univers.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="44">Dans la ville de Śiva, il a installé Siddheśvara, miraculeux liṅga de l'Éternel, brillant d'un pouvoir miraculeux, et dans l'île du bassin de Yaśodhara, un <foreign>liṅga</foreign> et des images.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="45">Ce roi habile, doué d'une vision divine, a ajouté cette incomparable image en or de Parameśvara, avec les rites appropriés, et la splendeur de ce prāsāt décoré de stuc.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="46">Jupiter uni à Saturne est dans le Lion ; Mars, dans le Capricorne ; Mercure avec Vénus, dans le Verseau ; le soleil domine dans les Poissons et la lune dans Puṣya ; levé avec le Taureau, Śaka joue avec les <supplied reason="subaudible">8</supplied> Corps, les <supplied reason="subaudible">6</supplied> saveurs et le nombre neuf ; propices, les planètes, ses Gaṇa, font fonction de hotar en présence du Seigneur de gloire bien établi en sa <supplied reason="subaudible">demeure</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="47">"Le juste soutient le Dharma, l'injuste le détruit, mais le plus fort des deux, c'est le premier", c'est dans cette pensée que Celui qui a un esprit sans limites <supplied reason="subaudible">Rājendravarman</supplied> juge inutile de faire appel à la bienveillance de ses successeurs <supplied reason="subaudible">pour entretenir sa fondation</supplied>.</p>
440 <p rend="stanza" n="48">Si les biens des dieux sont détruits, par suite de pratiques mauvaises dans l'observance du Dharma, les gens de bien en sont innocents, selon les proclamations répétées des rois.</p>

· <p rend="stanza" n="4">I revere <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vande</foreign></supplied> the Lotus-born [Brahmā] <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>aravindajam</foreign></supplied> <gap reason="lost"/> <supplied reason="subaudible">whose</supplied> full-blown <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>praphullaṃ</foreign></supplied> lotus <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>aravindam</foreign></supplied> with unshed petals <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>aśīrṇadalaiḥ</foreign></supplied> laughed at <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jahāsa</foreign></supplied> the valour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vīryām</foreign></supplied> and pride <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>madaṃ ca</foreign></supplied> of Madhu and Kaiṭabha <gap reason="lost"/> with the row of teeth that were its filaments.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="5">May the image of Harihara <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>parameśvaraśārṅgamūrtiḥ</foreign></supplied>, which excels <supplied reason="subaudible">on all sides</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viśeṣayantī</foreign></supplied>, having mixed lustre <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śliṣṭaprabhā</foreign></supplied>, bestow success <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>siddhiṃ dadhātu</foreign></supplied>, like <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> Gaṅgā where <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yatra</foreign></supplied> she is united with Yamunā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yamunā</foreign></supplied>,
·[thus being also of mixed lustre <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śliṣṭaprabhā</foreign></supplied> and beautiful all around <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viśeṣayantī</foreign></supplied>, and also particularly capable of bestowing of siddhi]
450while she thereby removes the good fortune <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhāgyāpakarṣavidhinā</foreign></supplied> of her rival <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sapatnyāḥ</foreign></supplied> Ambikā, who is conjoined <supplied reason="subaudible">with Śiva</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>militāmbikāyāḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">by becoming more beautiful than her</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="6">I venerate Bhava and Bhavānī, cause of the universe, united in one body, having various con- ditions, like Avyakta and Buddhi, as though they were <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> two paths of Dharma leading to heaven and to liberation, belonging/pleasing to the heart <supplied reason="subaudible">in so much as</supplied> having the <supplied reason="subaudible">mixed</supplied> radiance of the union of Himādri and Meru.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="7">I venerate <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>gṛṇāmi</foreign></supplied> Gaurī, who <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yā</foreign></supplied>, when she closed her eyes out of fear <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhayamīlitalocanā</foreign></supplied>, her limbs adorned with horripilation that was abundant with the breaking out of sweat <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>svedodgamapracurakaṇṭakamaṇditāṅgī</foreign></supplied>, although <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>api</foreign></supplied> Kāmadeva <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>madane</foreign></supplied> had been burnt be- cause of Śiva’s <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pinākadhanuṣaḥ</foreign></supplied> rage <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>roṣāt</foreign></supplied>, appeared/coruscated <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vireje</foreign></supplied> still/again <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>punaḥ</foreign></supplied> as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> pierced by a hundred <supplied reason="subaudible">of Kāmadeva’s</supplied> arrows <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mārgaṇaśatena</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="8">I revere <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>īḍe</foreign></supplied> the two lotus-feet of Sarasvatī that grow/are rooted <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rūḍham</foreign></supplied> in the lake that is the heart of learned persons, that have become red <supplied reason="subaudible">/that receive affection</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>upāttarāgam</foreign></supplied>, as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> reddened by the transposed blush of the rubies on the diadems of the host of prostrate gods <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>namrāmarendragaṇaśekharapadmarāga saṃkrāntarāgapariraktam</foreign></supplied>, the radiance of whose nails is prominent <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>unnakhārciḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="9">The torrent of Gaṅgā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>gaṅgācchaṭā</foreign></supplied> as she falls <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>patantī</foreign></supplied>, her clear drops shimmering <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sphuritācchabinduḥ</foreign></supplied>, from the sky <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nabhasaḥ</foreign></supplied>, which is anfractuous because of the prongs of the crescent moon <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>indvarddhakoṭiviṣamāt</foreign></supplied>, the breaking of Her curling waves <supplied reason="subaudible">/her crooked waves and ripples</supplied> dappled with a mass of stars <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tārākulākulitajihmataraṅgabhaṅgā</foreign></supplied>, as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> she is stretching out a broken pearl necklace of bright beads <supplied reason="subaudible">/a broken necklace of silver beads/ a necklace whose pearls have broken and scattered</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vicchinnatāramaṇihāravijṛmbhitā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
455 <p rend="stanza" n="10">It being the case that the world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagati</foreign></supplied> is entirely <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>akhilam</foreign></supplied> filled <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vyāpte</foreign></supplied> by a single quality <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ekaguṇena</foreign></supplied> of Hers <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yasyāḥ</foreign></supplied>, namely beauty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śobhāmayena</foreign></supplied> — just as <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> the body <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tanoḥ</foreign></supplied> of Lakṣmīpati, whose body is all things <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viśvamūrteḥ</foreign></supplied>, fills the universe in all directions <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>diśi</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">with one quality, namely beauty</supplied>—, what need to speak of <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kā vāk</foreign></supplied> Her other qualities (pariśeṣaguṇeṣu)? May that Lakṣmī, who governs mental troubles (ādhiṣu... adhi), destroy <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ghāniṣīṣṭa</foreign></supplied> your <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vaḥ</foreign></supplied> suffering/ill-deeds <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>duritam</foreign></supplied>!</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="11">Bow before <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>namata</foreign></supplied> Kambu, the son of Brahmā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>svāyambhuvam</foreign></supplied>, of lofty fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>udīrṇakīrtim</foreign></supplied>, whose excellent line of descendants <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>satsantatiḥ</foreign></supplied>, obtaining <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>āpnuvantī</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">marital</supplied> connec- tions with the lineages of the sun and the moon <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>arkasomakulasaṅgatim</foreign></supplied>, removes darkness in <supplied reason="subaudible">matters taught</supplied> in all disciplines <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sakalaśāstratamopahantrī</foreign></supplied>, is fiery <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tejasvinī</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">like the sun</supplied>, soft-rayed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>like the moon</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">/gentle in taxes</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mṛdukarā</foreign></supplied>, and full with <supplied reason="subaudible">every</supplied> digit <supplied reason="subaudible">/fully accomplished in the arts</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kalayābhipūrṇā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="12">I praise <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>īḍe</foreign></supplied> Merā, who has noble fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>udārayaśasam</foreign></supplied> among celestial women <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>surasundarīṇām</foreign></supplied>, who <supplied reason="explanation">yā</supplied> was led <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nītā</foreign></supplied> even <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>api</foreign></supplied> by Śiva <supplied reason="subaudible">Himself</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>hareṇa</foreign></supplied>, the teacher of the triple world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>trilokaguruṇā</foreign></supplied>, who had respect for <supplied reason="subaudible">Kambu’s</supplied> three eyes <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rakṣitrayādaravatā</foreign></supplied>, to loftily <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>uccaiḥ</foreign></supplied> becoming the queen <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahiṣītvam</foreign></supplied> of the great sage <supplied reason="subaudible">Kambu</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>maharṣeḥ</foreign></supplied>, out of a desire that they might surpass the creation of Dakṣa <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dakṣasṛṣṭyatiśayaiṣaṇayā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="13">The <supplied reason="subaudible">kings who are the</supplied> bearers of the burden of the territory of the illustrious Kambu <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrīkamvubhūbharabhṛtaḥ</foreign></supplied>, who have as their origin <supplied reason="subaudible">the king called</supplied> Śrutavarman <supplied reason="subaudible">/which are the origin of the protection of learning</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrutavarmamūlāḥ</foreign></supplied>, who, from the very beginning <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>maulāt</foreign></supplied>, have thrown aside the pride <supplied reason="subaudible">of enemies</supplied> caused by the obligation to pay tribute <supplied reason="subaudible">/which have thrown aside the pride caused by the bondage inflicted by Bali</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>apāstabalibandhakṛtābhimānāḥ</foreign></supplied>, who have good sons <supplied reason="subaudible">/which possess the good sword Nandaka</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sannandakāḥ</foreign></supplied>, whose heroism is clearly seen to be beautiful/whose beauty is clear and whose valour is visible [/whose heroism is clearly displayed by the bright Sudarśana cakra] (sphuṭasu- darśanadṛṣṭavīryāḥ), shine (cakāsati) as though they were (iva) the bolt-like arms (bāhudaṇḍāḥ) of Viṣṇu (hariḥ) incarnate [as men] (mūrtāḥ).</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="14"><supplied reason="subaudible">Other/later</supplied> kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>narendrāḥ</foreign></supplied>, on approaching those <supplied reason="subaudible">earlier kings</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yān... āsādya</foreign></supplied>, who were like the Rohaṇa mountain, which is conventionally known as Vidūrabhūmi <supplied reason="subaudible">/who were a lofty and distant land</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rūḍhavidūrabhūmim</foreign></supplied>, like jewellers <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>maṇikārakalpāḥ</foreign></supplied>, polished <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sañcaskrire</foreign></supplied> the gems of true virtue <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sadguṇamaṇim</foreign></supplied> that sprouted forth at the reverberating rumble of the clouds of their glories <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kīrtyambudapratiravāṅkuritam</foreign></supplied>, in order to beautify the beloved that was their own Fortune <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nijaramāramanīmṛjārtham</foreign></supplied>.</p>
460 <p rend="stanza" n="15">Seeing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vīkṣya</foreign></supplied> the spread of those <supplied reason="subaudible">earlier kings’</supplied> fieriness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yeṣāṃ pratāpavisaraṃ</foreign></supplied> of blazing valour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iddhavīryam</foreign></supplied> scattered <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kīrṇam</foreign></supplied> across the worlds <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhuvaneṣu</foreign></supplied>, ready to extinguish <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>praśamanodyatam</foreign></supplied> the energy of all others <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anyaujasām</foreign></supplied>, the Vaḍavānala <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>aurvavahniḥ</foreign></supplied> surely <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nu</foreign></supplied> took fright <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jātabhayaḥ</foreign></supplied>, as it were <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied>, and plunged <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>agamat</foreign></supplied> into the deep <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>agāḍham</foreign></supplied> ocean <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ambodhimadhyam</foreign></supplied>, eager to hide itself there <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>praniletukāmaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="16">From them <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tataḥ</foreign></supplied> were born <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jātāḥ</foreign></supplied> the kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kṣitīndrāḥ</foreign></supplied> beginning with the illustrious king Rudravarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrīrudravarmanṛpatipramukhāḥ</foreign></supplied> born of the illustrious Kauṇḍinya and the daughter of the Moon <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrīkauṇḍinyasomaduhitṛprabhavāḥ</foreign></supplied>, the splendour of their fame scattered across the triple world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagattrayavikīrṇayaśaḥprakāśāḥ</foreign></supplied>, who were <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ye</foreign></supplied> famed for their learning <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrutaśālinaḥ</foreign></supplied>, skilled <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dakṣāḥ</foreign></supplied> in disciplining their subjects <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prajāviracane</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">/veritable Dakṣas in the propagation of offspring</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="17">The bright lunar orbs of their fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaśaḥśubhaniśākaramaṇḍalāni</foreign></supplied> give soothing delight <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>āhlādayanti</foreign></supplied> constantly <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śaśvat</foreign></supplied> to the heavenly directions <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>digambarāṇi</foreign></supplied> on all sides <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>paritaḥ</foreign></supplied> surely <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nu</foreign></supplied> as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> out of fear that the orb of the egg of Brahmā might dissolve <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalavilīnabhiyā</foreign></supplied> because of the radiance of a thousand suns from the spread of their <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yeṣām</foreign></supplied> intense fieriness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tīvrapratāpavisarārkasahasradīptyā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="18">Not only because of beauty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāntyā</foreign></supplied> that reached lakhs of eyes <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>akṣilakṣagatayā</foreign></supplied> were they seen <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dadṛśire</foreign></supplied> as the “Five-arrowed One” <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pañcabāṇa iti</foreign></supplied> in this world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pade</foreign></supplied> of creatures <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagatām</foreign></supplied>, which was <supplied reason="subaudible">otherwise</supplied> devoid of amorous playfulness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>akelini</foreign></supplied>, but also because of their mighty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ūrjitaiḥ</foreign></supplied> powers of deluding, intoxicating, maddening, desiccation, inflaming, which <supplied reason="subaudible">for them</supplied> were also <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> acts <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>karmabhiḥ</foreign></supplied> of war <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yudhi</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">not just of love</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="19">In their lineage <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tatsantatau</foreign></supplied> was born <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ajani</foreign></supplied> the illustrious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrīmān</foreign></supplied> Jayavarman <supplied reason="subaudible">II</supplied>, who set down <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ādadhānaḥ</foreign></supplied> a city <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>padam</foreign></supplied> on the peak of the Mahendra mountain <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahendraśikhare</foreign></supplied>, who vanquished Indra <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śatayajvajayī</foreign></supplied> by a crore <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>koṭyā</foreign></supplied> of sacrifices <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>adhvarasya</foreign></supplied>, most glorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaśiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, whose footstool was transformed into a touchstone for <supplied reason="subaudible">testing the quality of the god of</supplied> the diadems of kṣatriyas <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rājanyamaulinikaṣīkṛtapādapīthaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
465 <p rend="stanza" n="20">Supporting the land of the illustrious Kambu [/bearing Śrī, the conch and Earth] <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrīkamvubhūbhṛt</foreign></supplied>, protector who is the jewel of the lineage of kings <supplied reason="subaudible">/protector who is the jewel of the solar dynasty (namely Rāma)</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>inavaṅśalalāmagoptā</foreign></supplied>, nurturer and uplifter of the earth <supplied reason="subaudible">/lifter of the Govardhana mountain</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>govarddhanoddhṛtikaraḥ</foreign></supplied>, enemy to hell <supplied reason="subaudible">/enemy of the demon Naraka</supplied>, victorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jiṣṇuḥ</foreign></supplied>, tamer of the dissolute <supplied reason="subaudible">/tamer of the serpent Kāliya</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhujaṅgadamanaḥ</foreign></supplied>, enemy to those who are thorns to Dharma <supplied reason="subaudible">/enemy to the thorns afflicting Indra</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛṣakaṇṭakāriḥ</foreign></supplied>, †...† a treasury of loveliness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāntinidhiḥ</foreign></supplied>, Jayavarman II <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> was similar to Lotus-Eyed <supplied reason="subaudible">Kṛṣṇa</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ambujalocanābhaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="21">Jayavarman II <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> simultaneously <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>samam</foreign></supplied> rendered <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vidadhe</foreign></supplied> the sky <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>divam</foreign></supplied> and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> the fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kīrtim</foreign></supplied> of Hundred-Sacrificed <supplied reason="subaudible">Indra</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śatamakhasya</foreign></supplied> smoky in colour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dhūmritābhām</foreign></supplied> by the smoke-plumes <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dhūmraiḥ</foreign></supplied> rising from his countless sacrifices <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>asaṃkhyamakhajaiḥ</foreign></supplied>; <supplied reason="subaudible">he rendered</supplied> his enemies’ <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dviṣatām</foreign></supplied> Fortune <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>lakṣmīm</foreign></supplied> and the blade of his sword <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>asilatām</foreign></supplied> red <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>raktām</foreign></supplied> in battles <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>raṇeṣu</foreign></supplied> with streams of blood <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rudhiraiḥ</foreign></supplied>; and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">he rendered</supplied> the heavenly quarters <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>diśaḥ</foreign></supplied> and his friends <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>suhṛdaḥ</foreign></supplied> bright <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śubhrā</foreign></supplied> by his magnificence <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vibhūtyā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="22">The victorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jayī</foreign></supplied> son <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ātmajaḥ</foreign></supplied> of that <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tasya</foreign></supplied> king of unconquerable splendour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ajayaśriyaḥ</foreign></supplied> was called Śrī-Jayavarman, vanquisher of his enemies <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ripuñjayaḥ</foreign></supplied>, who as a youth <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yuvā</foreign></supplied>, as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> because he was fond of his elders <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛddhapriyatvāt</foreign></supplied>, was passion- ate about ancient Knowledge <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛddhavidyārāgī</foreign></supplied>, and had distaste for the young woman Wealth <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrītaruṇīviraktaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="23">Methodical <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nayāḍhyaḥ</foreign></supplied>, Jayavarman III <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied>, taking <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nayan</foreign></supplied> the verbal root <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prakṛtim</foreign></supplied> when it was devoid of primary and secondary vowel-strengthening <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>guṇavṛddhihīnām</foreign></supplied>, applied all options of the <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vikalpayām āsa</foreign></supplied> secondary and pri- mary grades of vowel strengthening <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛddhiṃ guṇam</foreign></supplied>, teaching them <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anuśāstā</foreign></supplied> by yogavibhāga <supplied reason="subaudible">viz. division into three sūtras</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yuktyā</foreign></supplied>, being extremely acute in judgment <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>paṭiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> desirous of achieving <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vidhitsan</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">all forms of the verbal root</supplied> <foreign>mṛj</foreign>, “purify” <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mṛjim</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="explanation">for he was</supplied> knowledgeable about affixes that do not allow vowel-substitution <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saṃkramajñaḥ</foreign></supplied>.
· Statesmanlike <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nayāḍhyaḥ</foreign></supplied>, Jayavarman III <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied>, leading <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nayan</foreign></supplied> his subjects <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prakṛtim</foreign></supplied>, who had been devoid of virtue and prosperity <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>guṇavṛddhihīnām</foreign></supplied>, created <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vikalpayām āsa</foreign></supplied> prosperity <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛddhim</foreign></supplied> and virtue <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>guṇam</foreign></supplied>, disciplining them <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anuśāstā</foreign></supplied> with justice <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yuktyā</foreign></supplied>, being extremely acute in judgment <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>paṭiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, as though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> desirous of achieving <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vidhitsan</foreign></supplied> purity <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mṛjim</foreign></supplied>, being experienced in <supplied reason="subaudible">traversing</supplied> difficult paths <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saṃkramajñaḥ</foreign></supplied>.

· <p rend="stanza" n="24">Born <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>babhūva</foreign></supplied> to his maternal uncle <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tanmātulasya</foreign></supplied>, who was like Indra (indranibhasya) in power (bhūtyā), was a son (putraḥ) called (iti) Śrī-Indravarman; although (api) residing (sthi- taḥ) on earth (bhuvi) with the title of “Indra among men” (narendraśabdena), he long (cirāya) enjoyed the pleasures (lebhe sukhāni) [that are to be found] in Indra’s heaven <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>indrapade</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="25">The crowns <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>makuṭāni</foreign></supplied> of kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nṛpāṇām</foreign></supplied> fell <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>petuḥ</foreign></supplied> from their heads <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mūrdhnaḥ</foreign></supplied> at the feet (abhipādam) of Indravarman (yasya) as he mounted (ākrāmataḥ) his lion-throne (siṃhāsanam), thronged (citam) with a network of rays from its jewels <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ratnamayūkhajālaiḥ</foreign></supplied>, like <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> stars <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhāni</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">falling</supplied> from the heavens <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nabhastaḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">at the feet</supplied> of the sun <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhānoḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">as it mounts</supplied> Sunrise <supplied reason="subaudible">Mountain</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>udayam</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="26">Indravarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> installed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>atiṣṭhipat</foreign></supplied> the liṅga of Śiva (umāpateḥ) [called] Śrī-Indreśvara and (ca) images (pratimāḥ) of Viṣṇu, Devī and others (śrīdharāmbikādeḥ) on the earth (bhūmau) and (ca) his fame (kīrtim) in all directions (dikṣu), and (ca) he excavated (cakhāna) the valour (vīryam) of his enemies (ripoḥ) and the tank <supplied reason="subaudible">Indrataṭāka</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="27">His son <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tatsūnuḥ</foreign></supplied> was <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>āsīt</foreign></supplied> incomparable (asamaḥ), glorious (yaśasvī), who (yaḥ), bearing (dadhānaḥ) the title ŚrīYaśovarman, overlord (adhīśaḥ) of the earth (dharaṇeḥ) up to (ā) Sūkṣ- makāmrāta, the oceans, and such territories as China and Campā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sūkṣmakāmrātapayodhicīnacampādideśāt</foreign></supplied>.</p>
475 <p rend="stanza" n="28">As though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> with the thought <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iti</foreign></supplied> “Brahmā (padmāsanaḥ) constantly (nityam) desired to adorn (alaṅkariṣṇuḥ) the lotus in the beautiful navel (sunābhipadmam) of Lotus-Navelled [Viṣṇu] (ambhojanābhasya)!”, Śiva (śambhuḥ) long (cirāya) sat (adhyāsta) in the heart-lotus <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>hṛtpadmam</foreign></supplied> of this excellent man <supplied reason="subaudible">/ veritable Viṣṇu</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>puruṣottamasya</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="29">And <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> Yaśovarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> installed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>atiṣṭhipat</foreign></supplied> more than a hundred <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śatādhikam</foreign></supplied> deities <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>devam</foreign></supplied> on the five mountain-like peaks <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pañcādrikūṭeṣu</foreign></supplied> on the surface of an island <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dvīpatale</foreign></supplied> like <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> the five peaks of Meru <supplied reason="subaudible">which is on Jambudvīpa</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pañcamerukūṭeṣu</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">and</supplied> he excavated <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>cakhāna</foreign></supplied> the tank <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sthānam apām</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">called</supplied> Yaśodhara.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="30">To him <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tasya</foreign></supplied> was born <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>abhavat</foreign></supplied> a son <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tanujaḥ</foreign></supplied>, famed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pratītaḥ</foreign></supplied> as Śrī-Harṣavarman, who gave joy to the world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viṣṭapaharṣakārī</foreign></supplied>, whose feet were coloured by the rays from garlands of sapphires <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>°māṇikyamālādyutirañjitāṅghriḥ</foreign></supplied> on the diadems of kings who rule the four directions <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>caturddigīśakṣitipālamauli°</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="31">Harṣavarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> was rapid <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>laghuḥ</foreign></supplied> with weaponry, bright <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prakāśaḥ</foreign></supplied> in fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaśasi</foreign></supplied>, stalwart <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>stambhaḥ</foreign></supplied> in meditation <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>samādhau</foreign></supplied>, active <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pracalaḥ</foreign></supplied> for the sake of others <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>parārthe</foreign></supplied>, heavy/venerable <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>guruḥ</foreign></supplied> in valour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vīrye</foreign></supplied>, and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> a rampart <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saṃvaraṇaḥ</foreign></supplied> against faults, even though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>api</foreign></supplied> he stood in sattva <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sattvasthitaḥ</foreign></supplied>, he excelled in <supplied reason="subaudible">the other</supplied> two guṇas <supplied reason="subaudible">of rajas and tamas</supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="32">This [Harṣavarman] <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saḥ</foreign></supplied> established <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pratiṣṭhāpitavān</foreign></supplied> these <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>imāḥ</foreign></supplied> golden <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>cāmīkarīḥ</foreign></supplied> statues <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>arcāḥ</foreign></supplied> here <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iha</foreign></supplied> of Īśvara and Devī <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>īśvarayoḥ</foreign></supplied> for the increase of the merit <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dharmavṛddhyai</foreign></supplied> of his ancestors <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pitṝṇām</foreign></supplied>, and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> statues <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pratimāḥ</foreign></supplied> of Viṣṇu <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>murāreḥ</foreign></supplied> and his consorts <supplied reason="subaudible">Śrī and Bhū</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>devyoḥ</foreign></supplied> at the foot of the Indra-mountain <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>indrādripāde</foreign></supplied>.</p>
480 <p rend="stanza" n="33">Then <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>atha</foreign></supplied> there was <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>āsīt</foreign></supplied> his <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tasya</foreign></supplied> younger brother <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anujaḥ</foreign></supplied>, victorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jayī</foreign></supplied>, most glorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaśiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, born of the same womb <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sodaryajanmā</foreign></supplied>, who vanquished the beauty of Kāmadeva <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jitakāmakāntiḥ</foreign></supplied>, Śrī-Īśānavarman <supplied reason="subaudible">II</supplied>, destroyer <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nihantā</foreign></supplied> of darkness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tamasām</foreign></supplied>, a moon among kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nṛpatīnduḥ</foreign></supplied>, replete with <supplied reason="subaudible">all</supplied> the arts <supplied reason="subaudible">/lunar digits</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kalābhipūrṇaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="34">Īśānavarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied>, after establishing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pratiṣṭhāpya</foreign></supplied> Dharma, alone/which is one <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ekam</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">amongst his subjects</supplied>, as his goal <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sādhyam</foreign></supplied> — <supplied reason="subaudible">Dharma</supplied> which is well-known <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prasiddham</foreign></supplied> by inference, authoritative statements, and examples <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yuktyāgamodāharaṇaiḥ</foreign></supplied> — brought <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>unnināya</foreign></supplied> to fulfillment <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nirṇayam</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">the puruṣārthas</supplied> of Kāma and Artha, which are plural <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anekam</foreign></supplied>, just as <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> a debater <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vādī</foreign></supplied> who follows Nyāya <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>naiyāyikaḥ</foreign></supplied>,
· after establishing by means of inference, scripture and illustration <supplied reason="subaudible">viz. direct perception</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yuktyāgamodāharaṇaiḥ</foreign></supplied> one <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ekam</foreign></supplied> property <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dharmam</foreign></supplied> that is already established <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prasiddham</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">but</supplied> that he wants to prove <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sādhyam</foreign></supplied>, freely <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāmam</foreign></supplied> can <supplied reason="subaudible">go on to</supplied> bring to certainty numerous <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anekam</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">other</supplied> things <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>artham</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="35">The husband <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>patiḥ</foreign></supplied> of the sister of his father <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pitṛsvasus tasya</foreign></supplied>, most acute <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>patiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, bright <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ujjvalaḥ</foreign></supplied> with glory <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śriyā</foreign></supplied>, was called Śrī Jayavarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śrījayavarmanāmā</foreign></supplied>; by means of his wealth <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vibhūtyā</foreign></supplied> and greatness <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahimnā</foreign></supplied> he <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yena</foreign></supplied> created <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kṛtā</foreign></supplied> a city <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>purī</foreign></supplied> that was the resort <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sthānam</foreign></supplied> of the glories <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śriyām</foreign></supplied> of the triple world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhuvanatrayasya</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="36">As though <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied> thinking <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iti</foreign></supplied> this <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>eṣaḥ</foreign></supplied> Viṣṇu <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jiṣṇuḥ</foreign></supplied> must be <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhavet</foreign></supplied> tired <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>khinnaḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">from</supplied> carrying the Creator <supplied reason="subaudible">Brahmā</supplied> in the lotus growing from his navel <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nābhyamvujadhātṛdhārī</foreign></supplied> for a long time <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>cirāya</foreign></supplied>, Jayavarman IV <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> showed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sandarśayām āsa</foreign></supplied> in his val- our <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>parākrame</foreign></supplied> Four-armed <supplied reason="subaudible">Viṣṇu</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>caturbhujam</foreign></supplied> residing in his arms <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhujastham</foreign></supplied> and bore <supplied reason="subaudible">Viṣṇu’s</supplied> burden [of protecting the earth].</p>
485 <p rend="stanza" n="37">Jayavarman IV <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yena</foreign></supplied> installed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>asthāpi</foreign></supplied> in Liṅgapura, in a huge <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>adhike</foreign></supplied> foundation <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sthāne</foreign></supplied>, a liṅga of Śiva <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śarvasya</foreign></supplied> standing nine times <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>navadhā</foreign></supplied> nine cubits <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>navahastaniṣṭham</foreign></supplied> along with with statues <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nimābhiḥ</foreign></supplied> of Brahmā and others <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>caturmukhādeḥ</foreign></supplied>, an extremely difficult <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>suduṣkaram</foreign></supplied> great feat <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahāpadānam</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="38">Jayavarman’s <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tadīyaḥ</foreign></supplied> son <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tanayaḥ</foreign></supplied> was victorious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vijetā</foreign></supplied> Śrī-Harṣavarman, who <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> gave joy <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>harṣadāyī</foreign></supplied> to creatures <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagatām</foreign></supplied>, of most fiery valour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tejiṣṭhavīryaḥ</foreign></supplied>, most excellent <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>variṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied> in renown <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaśasā</foreign></supplied>, wise <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prājñaḥ</foreign></supplied>, whose commands were never broken <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>avikhaṇḍitājñaḥ</foreign></supplied> because of his power <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prabhāvāt</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="39">Harṣavarman’s <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yasya</foreign></supplied> sword <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kaukṣeyakaḥ</foreign></supplied>, fixed upright in his hand <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhujapratiṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied>, spat- tered <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>digdhaḥ</foreign></supplied> with the blood of the armies of his enemies <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>aripakṣakṣatajena</foreign></supplied>, bore <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>uvāha</foreign></supplied> the beauty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>lakṣmīm</foreign></supplied> of the great mountain <supplied reason="subaudible">Mandara</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mahādreḥ</foreign></supplied> along with the fire <supplied reason="subaudible">of sparks generated</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sāgneḥ</foreign></supplied> when agitated <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kṣubhitasya</foreign></supplied> in the ocean <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ambunidhau</foreign></supplied> by Viṣṇu <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>adhokṣajena</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="40">Harṣavarman’s <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tadīyaḥ</foreign></supplied> brother <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhrātā</foreign></supplied>, his elder <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jyeṣṭhaḥ</foreign></supplied> in age <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vayasā</foreign></supplied> and in plenitude of virtues <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>guṇaughaiḥ</foreign></supplied>, the rise of whose good qualities was sung by the universe <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagadgītaguṇodayaḥ</foreign></supplied>, was <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>abhūt</foreign></supplied> Śrī-Rājendravarman, lord of the lords of the universe <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jagatīpatīndraḥ</foreign></supplied>, who vanquished <supplied reason="subaudible">all other</supplied> kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jitarājakaḥ</foreign></supplied> with his Royal Splendour <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rājyalakṣmyā</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="41">As is well-known <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>khalu</foreign></supplied>, when Rājendravarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yena</foreign></supplied> employed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prayuktā</foreign></supplied> punishment <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>daṇḍanītiḥ</foreign></supplied>, being of bright majesty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śubhaśrīḥ</foreign></supplied>, it separated <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viśleṣakṛt</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">his subjects</supplied> from a black destiny <supplied reason="subaudible">in hell</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kṛṣṇagateḥ</foreign></supplied>, causing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ādadhānā</foreign></supplied> the stability of the noble classes <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kalyānavarṇasthitim</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">and thus</supplied> laughed to scorn <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>viḍambayām āsa</foreign></supplied> the glory of mercurial elixir <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rasendralakṣmīm</foreign></supplied>,
490 which, being of bright shininess <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śubhaśrīḥ</foreign></supplied>, separates <supplied reason="subaudible">iron/copper/itself</supplied> from its black nature <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kṛṣṇagateḥ</foreign></supplied>, causing the establishment of golden colour.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="42">Rājendravarman’s <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yadīyā</foreign></supplied> beauty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāntiḥ</foreign></supplied>, lovely <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>lalitā</foreign></supplied> by nature <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nisargāt</foreign></supplied>, pleasing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nandayantī</foreign></supplied> even <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>api</foreign></supplied> thousands of eyes <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sahasranetrāṇi</foreign></supplied>, eclipsed <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>adharīcakāra</foreign></supplied> by far <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dūrāt</foreign></supplied> the beauty <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāntim</foreign></supplied> of Smara, which provoked <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vidhātrīm</foreign></supplied> the great anger of the Three-Eyed <supplied reason="subaudible">Śiva</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>trinetroruruṣām</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="43">The creeper that is the fame <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kīrtilatā</foreign></supplied> of Rājendravarman <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yadīyā</foreign></supplied> repeatedly encircles <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>veveṣṭyate</foreign></supplied> the series of trees that are the worlds <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhuvanadrumālīm</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">since it is</supplied> watered <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>siktā</foreign></supplied> by flowing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sravadbhiḥ</foreign></supplied> gift-giving waters <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dānāmbubhiḥ</foreign></supplied> produced with <supplied reason="subaudible">the offering of</supplied> plentiful wealth in the form of elephants <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anekapānekadhanaprayuktaiḥ</foreign></supplied> and amply freshened with lotusses <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>puṣkarapuṣkalārdraiḥ</foreign></supplied> <gap reason="lost"/>.
·by the liquid of musth <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dānāmbubhiḥ</foreign></supplied> produced by a profuse wealth of elephants <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anekapānekadhanaprayuktaiḥ</foreign></supplied> and by which <supplied reason="subaudible">even</supplied> the tips of their trunks were thoroughly soaked <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>puṣkarapuṣkalārdraiḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="44">In Śivapura <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śaive pure</foreign></supplied> the <foreign>liṅga</foreign> of the Unborn <supplied reason="subaudible">Śiva</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ajasya</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">called</supplied> Siddheśvara was rendered bright with wealth <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>siddhavibhūtiśubhram</foreign></supplied> by him <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yena</foreign></supplied> and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> a <foreign>liṅga</foreign> was set up <supplied reason="subaudible">as well as</supplied> statues for worship <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>arcāḥ</foreign></supplied> on the island <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dvīpe</foreign></supplied> of the Yaśodhara-tank <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>taṭākasya</foreign></supplied>.</p>
495 <p rend="stanza" n="45">This <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saḥ</foreign></supplied> skillful <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pravīṇaḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">King Rājendravarman</supplied>, who experienced the divine <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>divyadṛśvā</foreign></supplied>, perfected <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>upāskṛta</foreign></supplied> this <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>imām</foreign></supplied> matchless <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>apratimām</foreign></supplied> golden <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>hiraṇmayīm</foreign></supplied> image <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pratimām</foreign></supplied> of the Supreme Lord <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>parameśvarasya</foreign></supplied> in accordance with the rules <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vidhānaiḥ</foreign></supplied> and <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ca</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">perfected</supplied> the beauty of this sanctuary <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>prāsādaśobhām</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">such that it was</supplied> bright with lime-plaster <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sudhāvicitrām</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="46">Jupiter <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jīvaḥ</foreign></supplied> with Saturn <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>saurayutaḥ</foreign></supplied> was in Leo <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mṛgādhipagatiḥ</foreign></supplied>; Mars <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhaumaḥ</foreign></supplied> was in a good position <supplied reason="subaudible">viz. Capricorn</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sumārgaḥ</foreign></supplied>; Mercury <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>Budhaḥ</foreign></supplied> with Venus <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kāvyena</foreign></supplied> have reached the lord of the water-jar <supplied reason="subaudible">Aquarius</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>āptaghaṭādhipaḥ</foreign></supplied>; the sun <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dinakaraḥ</foreign></supplied> dominated Pisces <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>mīneśvaraḥ</foreign></supplied>; the moon <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>candramāḥ</foreign></supplied> dominated Puṣya <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>puṣyeśaḥ</foreign></supplied>; at the rise Taurus <supplied reason="subaudible">was on the horizon</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vṛṣoditaḥ</foreign></supplied>; the Śaka <supplied reason="subaudible">king</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>śakaḥ</foreign></supplied> was playing <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>krīḍamānaḥ</foreign></supplied> with <supplied reason="subaudible">eight</supplied> bodies, <supplied reason="subaudible">six</supplied> tastes and nine —<supplied reason="subaudible">thus</supplied> the planets <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>grahagaṇāḥ</foreign></supplied>, propitious <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dhanyāḥ</foreign></supplied>, occupied the positions of presiding priests <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>hautrapadasthitāḥ</foreign></supplied>, at the moment when <supplied reason="subaudible">this deity called</supplied> Yaśassvāmin occupied <supplied reason="subaudible">for the first time</supplied> his proper position <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>svasthe</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="47">A moral person <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dhārmikaḥ</foreign></supplied> supports <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bharati</foreign></supplied> Dharma, which <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yam</foreign></supplied> Adharma damages <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bādhate</foreign></supplied>. Among these too <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anayoḥ</foreign></supplied> <supplied reason="subaudible">Dharma and Adharma</supplied> the first <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>pūrvaḥ</foreign></supplied> is very much the stronger <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>subalīyān</foreign></supplied>. Thinking this <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iti</foreign></supplied>, being not of limited intellect <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>amitadhīḥ</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">the king</supplied> has not begged <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>na yayāce</foreign></supplied> future <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhāvinaḥ</foreign></supplied> kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>naradevān</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">who will inevitably be</supplied> men of merit <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sukṛtinaḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="48">Even if there is <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sati</foreign></supplied> destruction of the property of the gods <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>devadravyavināśe</foreign></supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">which happens</supplied> when there are catastrophic deeds that deviate from moral conduct <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dharmācāraviplutācarite</foreign></supplied>, good people <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sādhujanāḥ</foreign></supplied> are without fault <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nirdoṣāḥ</foreign></supplied> since kings <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>rājñām</foreign></supplied> have often <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bahukṛtvaḥ</foreign></supplied> announced <supplied reason="subaudible">this in their blessings</supplied> <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>jñāpanaiḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
