Translation by Sastri 1969

Hail! Haṁguṇuvula Dēvaṇa gave as gift to the glorious (Goddess) Sati (= Durga) land sowable with four puṭṭis and ten tūmus of paddy according to the royal measure. Whoever violates this (gift) will commit the sin of demolishing Bāraṇāsi.1

Commentary

It is stated in A. R. p. 24 that the stone has been mutilated since the inscription was first published in 1990. Unfortunately, only the first face of the stone was printed by A. Butterworth and Venugopaul Chetty. When comparing this image with the picture in A. R., plate I it is evident that approximately one akṣara per line has gone missing. Mirrowing both sides one can surmise that at least one akṣara is missing at the beginning of each line on face two. The inscription is written from the bottom to the top. This was not taken into consideration by A. Butterworth and Venugopaul Chetty so that their line numbering is deviating. Besides that their second side is the true first side. In order to not create confusion the face and line numbering of A. R. was generalized.

Bibliography

The inscription was first edited by Alan Butterworth and V. Venugopaul Chetty (1990, pp. 291–292) with a picture of the first face of the stone. The inscription was edited again in A. R. 1933-1934, p. 41 with a picture of each face and translated by K. M. Sastri (1969, p. 295, № 21).
