While the wheel of his <supplied reason="subaudible">authority</supplied> went as far as the golden circle <supplied reason="explanation">i.e. Mount Mēru</supplied> on the earth, which was surrounded by the moat of the sea, that was <supplied reason="subaudible">again</supplied> surrounded by his <supplied reason="subaudible">fame</supplied>, <supplied reason="subaudible">the king</supplied> newly wedded, in the time <supplied reason="subaudible">when he was still</supplied> heir-apparent, the brilliant goddess of victory at Cakkara-k-kōṭṭam by deeds of valour and seized a herd of mountains of rut <supplied reason="explanation">i.e. rutting elephants</supplied> at Vayirgaram; <supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> unsheathed <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> sword, showed the strength of <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> arm, and spurred <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> war-steed, so that the army of the king of Kuntaḷa, <supplied reason="subaudible">whose appear had</supplied> a sharp point, retreated; having established <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> fame, having put on the garland of <supplied reason="subaudible">the victory over</supplied> the Northern region, and having stopped the prostitution of the goddess with the sweet and excellent lotus-flower <supplied reason="explanation">i.e. Lakṣmī</supplied> of the Southern region, and the loneliness of the goddess of the good country whose garment is the Poṉṉi, <supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> put on by right <supplied reason="subaudible">of inheritance</supplied> the pure royal crown of jewels, while the kings of the earth bore his two feet <supplied reason="subaudible">on their heads</supplied> as a large crown; the river <supplied reason="subaudible">of the rules</supplied> of the ancient king Manu swelled, <supplied reason="subaudible">and</supplied> the river <supplied reason="subaudible">of the sins</supplied> of the Kali <supplied reason="subaudible">age</supplied> dried up; <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> scepter swayed over every <supplied reason="subaudible">quarter of</supplied> this continent; the white light of the sacred shadow of <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> white parasol shone everywhere on the circle of the great earth; <supplied reason="subaudible">and his</supplied> tiger <supplied reason="subaudible">-banner</supplied> fluttered unrivalled on the Mēru <supplied reason="subaudible">mountain</supplied>; <supplied reason="subaudible">before him</supplied> stood a row of elephants showering jewels, which were presented <supplied reason="subaudible">as</supplied> tribute by the kings of remote islands whose girdle is the sea; the excellent head of the refractory king of the South <supplied reason="explanation">i.e. the Pāṇṭiya</supplied> lay outside his <supplied reason="explanation">viz., Kulōttuṅka’s</supplied> beautiful city, being pecked by kites;
· not only did the speech of the kings of the seven clan <supplied reason="subaudible">of the Vēḷ clan?</supplied>:- after this day a permanent blemish <supplied reason="subaudible">will attach to Kulōttuṅka</supplied>, as to the crescent <supplied reason="subaudible">which is the origin</supplied> of <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> family turn out wrong but the bow <supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the hands of the kings of the seven clans <supplied reason="subaudible">of the Vēḷ clan?</supplied> were not <supplied reason="subaudible">even</supplied> bent against <supplied reason="subaudible">the enemy</supplied>; everywhere from Naṅkili of rocky roads –with Maṇalūr in the middle – to the Tuṅkapattirai, there were lying low the dead <supplied reason="subaudible">bodies of his</supplied> furious elephants, his lost pride and <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> boasted valour; the very mountains which <supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> ascended bent their backs; the very rivers into which <supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> descended eddied and breached <supplied reason="subaudible">the banks</supplied> in their course; <supplied reason="subaudible">and</supplied> the very seas into which <supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> plunged became troubled and agitated; <supplied reason="subaudible">the Cōḻa king </supplied>seized simultaneously the two countries <supplied reason="explanation">pāṇi</supplied> called Kaṅkamaṇṭalam and Ciṅkaṇam, troops of furious elephants which had been irretrievably abandoned <supplied reason="explanation">by the enemy</supplied>, crowds of women, <supplied reason="explanation">the angles of</supplied> whose beautiful eyes were as pointed as daggers, the goddess of fame, who gladly brought disgrace <supplied reason="subaudible">on Vikkalaṉ</supplied>, and the great goddess of victory, who changed to the opposite <supplied reason="explanation">side</supplied> and caused <supplied reason="subaudible">Vikkalaṉ</supplied> himself and <supplied reason="explanation">his</supplied> father, who were desirous of the rule over the Western region, to turn their backs again and again on many days; having resolved in <supplied reason="explanation">his</supplied> royal mind to conquer also the Pāṇṭimaṇṭalam with great fame, <supplied reason="explanation">he</supplied> dispatched his great army – which possessed <supplied reason="subaudible">excellent horses resembling the waves of the sea</supplied>, war-elephants <supplied reason="explanation">resembling</supplied> ships, and troops <supplied reason="explanation">resembling</supplied> water, – as though the Northern ocean was overflowing the Southern ocean;

210 <p n="19-24">In the year 34 <supplied reason="subaudible">of the reign</supplied> of the king Rājakēcaripanmar alias Emperor śrī-Kulōttuṅka- devar, the land I, Kaṭampaṅkuṭaiyāṉ Kūttaṉ Veṇkāṭu-tēvaṉ of Virutarājapayaṅkara-vaḷanāṭu, purchased from the assembly of Aḻakiya-cōḻa-c-caruppētimaṅkalam of Vākūr-nāṭu in Kaṅkaikoṇṭa- cōḻa-vaḷanāṭu:
· one <foreign>mā</foreign> of land situated to the east of Pavittramāṇikkavati, to the north of Rājendracōḻaṉ canal, and the east of the third square and the sixth channel and three and a half <foreign>mās</foreign> of land to the west of the fourth square – thus the land of four and a half <foreign>mās</foreign>;</p>
· <p n="24-28">I, Kaṭampaṅkuṭaiyāṉ Kūttaṉ Veṇkāṭu-tēvaṉ, having given as the land for the <supplied reason="subaudible">ceremony of</supplied> waking up the Lord, for the great Lord of śrī-Mūlastāṉam of this village, and according to the land endowment, I have donated four <foreign>nāḻis</foreign> of rice for food offerings, five side dishes, one <foreign>ceviṭu</foreign> and a quarter measure of ghee, one <foreign>uḻakku</foreign> of curd, three areca nuts, six betel leaves and eight sacred lamps, as long as the moon and the sun will last. This is under the protection of the Śaiva devotees.</p>
