35 <p>This inscription in 19 lines is engraved on the third plate of the <hi rend="bold">Tirukkaḷar</hi> set. It is dated in the twenty-eighth year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Tribhuvanachakravartin Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷadēva</hi> without any distinguishing epithet or historical introduc-tion. In the absence of these, though it is not generally possible to say to which of the three kings who bore that name this record must be attributed, yet it appears to be a record of <hi rend="bold">Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷa</hi> I, since it is stated in the fourth inscription in this set in referring to this record that the king abolished tolls—which is generally a feat attributed to Kulōttuṅga I. It registers a gift of paddy made by a certain <hi rend="bold">Śivaṉ Tillaināyakaṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śiṟuttoṇḍanambi</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Taṇṇīrkuṉṟam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Neṉmali-nāḍu</hi> to the temple of <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> at <hi rend="bold">Tirukkaḷar</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Puṟaṅgarambai-nāḍu</hi> which was a sub-division of <hi rend="bold">Rājēndraśōḻa-vaḷanāḍu</hi> for the purpose of taking in proces-sion <hi rend="bold">Aravābharaṇadēva</hi>, for offerings to <hi rend="bold">Piḷḷaiyār</hi> and the god in the <hi rend="bold">Mūlaṭṭānam</hi> and for feeding devotees on the days of the new-moon.</p>

· <p><hi rend="bold">Taṇṇīrkuṉṟam</hi>, to which the donor belonged, is a village 7 miles to the east of <hi rend="bold">Maṉṉārguḍi</hi> in the Tanjore District. The modern village of <hi rend="bold">Nemmeli</hi> in the same Taluk, must have been the principal place in the division <hi rend="bold">Neṉmali-nāḍu</hi> in which <hi rend="bold">Taṇṇīrkuṉṟam</hi> is said to have been situated.</p>

· <p>Hail! Prosperity! In the twenty-eighth year of (<hi rend="italic">the reign of</hi>) the emperor of the three worlds, the glorious <hi rend="bold">Kulōttuṅga-Chōḷadēva, Śivaṉ Tillaināyagaṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śiṟuttoṇḍanambi</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Taṇṇīrkuṉṟam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Neṉmali-nāḍu</hi> made the following gift to (<hi rend="italic">the temple of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Tirukkaḷar</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Puṟaṅgarambai-nāḍu</hi> (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of Rājēndraśōḻa-vaḷānaḍu, for the purpose of conducting the festival of <hi rend="bold">Aravābharaṇadēva</hi> on the day of the new-moon, the grand offerings to the god to be made on that day, offerings to <hi rend="bold">Piḷḷaiyār</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, Gaṇapati), offerings to the god in the central shrine (<hi rend="italic">Mūlasthāna</hi>) and for the feeding of the devotees (<hi rend="italic">dēvaraḍiyār) (to be made</hi>) on the (<hi rend="italic">same</hi>) day.</p>

· <p>For the interest in paddy of fifteen <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> which accrues at the rate of three <hi rend="italic">kuṟuṇi</hi> per <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> on the sixty <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> of paddy which, we the <hi rend="bold">Śiva-Brāhmaṇas</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">viz.,</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Kauśikaṉ Veṇkāḍabhaṭṭaṉ, Kāśyapaṉ Kāṟāyil Muḷaichchaṉ, Kauśikaṉ Ādittaṉ Āḍavallāṉ</hi> and other <hi rend="bold">Śiva-Brāhmaṇas</hi> of this temple had received as principal for (<hi rend="italic">bearing</hi>) interest from this person (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, Śivaṉ Tillaināyakaṉ) in the month of <hi rend="bold">Vaigāśi</hi> of this year, we the five <hi rend="italic">viz.</hi>, <hi rend="bold">Aravābharaṇaṉ Eḍuttapādam</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Tiruchchiṟṟambalakkālāṉ, Aravābharaṇaṉ Iyabaradanādaṉ</hi>, <hi rend="bold">Ādavallāṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pūrvaśivaṉ</hi> (<hi rend="italic">alias</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Pattargaṇāyaka-Pichchaṉ, Ara-vindaṉ Kuran</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Nāṟpatteṇṇāyira-Pichchaṉ, Kūttaṉ Gaṅgai-koṇḍāṉ</hi> <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śivaśaraṇaśēgara-Mūvēndavēḷāṉ</hi> of this village, who came forward (<hi rend="italic">for this purpose</hi>) shall conduct the (<hi rend="italic">specified</hi>) expenses on each new-moon day, at the rate of (<hi rend="italic">one) kalam</hi> and three <hi rend="italic">kuṟuṇi</hi> as long as the Moon and the Sun (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>).</p>

· <p>For the (<hi rend="italic">one</hi>) hundred and twenty <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi> of paddy which we had received on interest by agreement from <hi rend="bold">Śivaṉ Tillaināyagaṉ</hi> of this village, the interest in paddy for a period of one year calculated at the rate of three <hi rend="italic">kuṟuṇi</hi> per <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi>, is thirty <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi>.</p>

95 <p>With these thirty <hi rend="italic">kalam</hi>, through those who stand for us we shall feed the devotees at the rate of two <hi rend="italic">kalam, (one) tūṇi</hi> and (<hi rend="italic">one) padakku</hi> of paddy for one new-moon day.</p>

· <p>As long as the sun and the moon (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>), the Srī-Māhēśvaras shall be surety (for this). <hi rend="bold">Kaṇpeṟṟāṉ</hi> shall be in charge of the Māhēśvara-kāṇi. This is my writing.</p>
