35 <p>This is dated in the 5th year of <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who took the head of the <hi rend="bold">Pāṇḍya</hi> king and records a gift of gold by a female-servant of the palace, who was living in the quarter of <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr</hi> called <hi rend="bold">Paḻaiya-vēḷam</hi>, for feeding a <hi rend="italic">śivayōgin</hi> in the temple of <hi rend="bold">Tirukkīḻ-kōṭṭam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Tirukkuḍamūkkil</hi>. The names <hi rend="bold">Tirukkuḍamūkkil</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Tirukkīḻ-kōṭṭam</hi> occur in the <hi rend="italic">Dēvāram</hi> and refer respectively to <hi rend="bold">Kumbakōṇam</hi> and the <hi rend="bold">Nāgēśvara</hi> temple. <hi rend="italic">Śivayōgin</hi> is a technical term and is explained in a recent commentary on the <hi rend="italic">Kriyākramadyōtikā</hi> as the name of a Śaiva worshipper who “at the approach of death bathes his body in ashes, utters certain Śaiva <hi rend="italic">mantras</hi> and worships the <hi rend="italic">liṅga</hi> on his chest.”</p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 5th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi> who took the head of the <hi rend="bold">Pāṇḍya</hi> (<hi rend="italic">king</hi>), <hi rend="bold">Pērayaṉ Tribhuvanasundari</hi>, a palace-woman (<hi rend="italic">peṇḍāṭṭi) (living</hi>) in the (<hi rend="italic">quarter called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Paḻaiya-vēḷam</hi> at <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Tañjāvūr-kūṟṟam</hi>, deposited 85 (<hi rend="italic">pieces</hi>) of superfine gold for feeding (<hi rend="italic">a śivayōgin</hi>) with one plate of sumptuous meal in the temple of the great lord of <hi rend="bold">Tirukkīḻ-kōṭṭam</hi> at <hi rend="bold">Tirukkuḍamūkkil</hi>, a <hi rend="italic">dēvadāna (village</hi>) in <hi rend="bold">Vaḍagarai Pāmbūr-nāḍu</hi>.</p>

· <p>(L. 8.) For this (<hi rend="italic">gold</hi>), we, the big men of the <hi rend="italic">mūlaparuḍai (assembly</hi>), sold to this lady the land in <hi rend="bold">Mēlkāviri</hi> which we had acquired as <hi rend="italic">abhishēkadakshiṇā</hi> and had (<hi rend="italic">already</hi>) sold to this god.</p>

This six <hi rend="italic">mā</hi> of cultivable land whose eastern boundary was to the west of the land granted for a lamp by <hi rend="bold">Kāḍaṉ Āchchaṉ</hi>, to the north of the land of this same god, to the east of the land of this same god and to the south of the demarcation ridge in the tank,—this six <hi rend="italic">mā</hi> of cultivable land thus (<hi rend="italic">marked out</hi>) shall be utilised for feeding, till the moon and the sun (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>), one <hi rend="italic">Śivayōgin</hi> with five vegetables, one <hi rend="italic">piḍi</hi> of ghee, plantain fruits, and curds sweetened with sugar.</p>

⟨8⟩ (pa)cukkum. The word pacu perhaps stands for pacumpoṉ which means fine gold of greenish yellow.
