35 <p>This is again an inscription of <hi rend="bold">Madiraikoṇḍa Rājakēsarivarman</hi> dated in the 7th year of his reign. It registers a gift of a land by purchase, by two <hi rend="bold">Veḷḷāḷa</hi> brothers of <hi rend="bold">Oṉpadiṟṟuvēli</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Ārkāṭṭu-kūṟṟam</hi>, a subdivision of <hi rend="bold">Śōṇāḍu</hi>, to the Mahādēva temple of <hi rend="bold">Tīruttaṇḍīśvaram</hi> at <hi rend="bold">Veḷichchēri</hi>.</p>

· <p><hi rend="bold">Oṉpadiṟṟuvēli</hi> may be identified with <hi rend="bold">Ombattuvēli</hi> in the Tanjore taluk of the Tanjore district. <hi rend="bold">Ārkāḍu</hi> which was evidently the headquarters of the subdivision <hi rend="bold">Ārkāṭṭu-kūṟṟam</hi> is now a petty village in the vicinity of <hi rend="bold">Tirukkāṭṭuppaḷḷi</hi>.</p>

· <p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 7th year of (<hi rend="italic">the reign of</hi>) king <hi rend="bold">Rājakēsarivarman</hi> who took <hi rend="bold">Madirai</hi> (Madura), we (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the great assembly of <hi rend="bold">Veḷichchēri</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Puliyūr-kōṭṭam</hi>, having gathered in assembly without deficiency, in the <hi rend="italic">Brahmasthāna</hi> of our village, sold the (<hi rend="italic">following</hi>) land:—</p>

· <p>(L. 4.) the . . . . . the land included in the tank of <hi rend="bold">Adambuḻānaḻi</hi> of . . . . . . the eastern hamlet of this village . . . . . west . . . this path; the southern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the north of the (<hi rend="italic">channel called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Māṉayīṭṭu-kāl</hi>; the western boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the east of the path which passes by the tank (called) <hi rend="bold">Taṭṭāṉēri</hi>; and the northern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the south of the channel of <hi rend="bold">Kōṭṭūr</hi>. We sold the land situated within the enclosure of these four boundaries excluding the land . . . . . within (<hi rend="italic">it) (but</hi>) without excluding the <hi rend="italic">uṇṇilam</hi>.</p>

· <p>(L. 9.) Having given the sale money and <hi rend="italic">kīḻ-iṟai</hi> thus, <hi rend="bold">Indraṉ Paḻanattaḍigaḷ</hi> the cultivator (<hi rend="italic">veḷḷāḷaṉ</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Oṉpadiṟṟuvēli</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Ārkāṭṭu-kūṟṟam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Śōṇāḍu</hi>, and his younger brother <hi rend="bold">Aṇṇāmalai</hi>, got (<hi rend="italic">this land</hi>) sold (<hi rend="italic">to them</hi>), and we sold (<hi rend="italic">the land</hi>) having received in full the sale-money of this land from these two persons. We (<hi rend="italic">the members of the assembly</hi>) shall not show (<hi rend="italic">in our account books</hi>) any kind of tax as accruing on this land such as <hi rend="italic">iṟai, echchōṟu, amañji</hi>, free labour (<hi rend="italic">veṭṭi), vēdiṉai</hi> and <hi rend="italic">antarāya</hi>. We (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the big assembly gave a written agreement that (<hi rend="italic">the assembly of</hi>) all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras (alone</hi>) shall (<hi rend="italic">have the right to</hi>) levy, in case they choose (<hi rend="italic">to do so</hi>), to be credited to the council of justice (<hi rend="italic">dharmāsana</hi>), a fine of these<note>The word “these” has not been here used with reference to any mentioned above. Perhaps it has to be cancelled.</note> two-hundred <hi rend="italic">kāṇam</hi> on each of the persons that show (<hi rend="italic">any such tax) (in the books</hi>). We (<hi rend="italic">the members</hi>) of the big assembly (<hi rend="italic">also</hi>) gave a written agreement that the two tenants who cultivate this land (<hi rend="italic">shall have</hi>) all exemptions. At the command of these (<hi rend="italic">members</hi>), I, <hi rend="bold">Vaikānasaṉ Perumāṉ-Bhaṭṭaṉ</hi>, wrote (<hi rend="italic">this</hi>).</p>

(<hi rend="italic">We</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Indraṉ Paḻaṉattaḍigaḷ</hi> and his younger brother <hi rend="bold">Aṇṇāmalai</hi> granted on the same terms, (<hi rend="italic">the land</hi>) obtained in this wise from the members of the big assembly of our (<hi rend="italic">village</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Veḷichchēri</hi> to <hi rend="bold">Mahādēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Śiva</hi>) of (<hi rend="italic">the temple of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tiruttaṇḍīśvaram</hi> in this village for burning one perpetual lamp as long as the moon and the sun (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>) and for the presentation of sacred offerings (<hi rend="italic">prepared</hi>) with two <hi rend="italic">nāḻi</hi> of rice, at midday, to (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Gaṇapati</hi> set up in the sacred shrine which we had built in this temple. We, the following Śiva-Brāhmaṇas (<hi rend="italic">viz.,</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgādhara-Śiva, Amirta-rañjana-Śiva</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Poṉmalai-Śiva</hi> of (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, attached to) the sacred central shrine in (<hi rend="italic">the temple of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tiruttaṇḍīśvaram</hi> received this land (<hi rend="italic">on the understanding</hi>) that obtaining this land given by these persons, we shall burn this perpetual lamp and (<hi rend="italic">also</hi>) present sacred offerings to <hi rend="bold">Gaṇapati</hi>. We (agree) to conduct this service without default as long as the moon and the sun (<hi rend="italic">endure</hi>). If (<hi rend="italic">any</hi>) default (<hi rend="italic">happens</hi>) we shall double the scale (<hi rend="italic">of service</hi>). The eighty great men of the administrative assembly (<hi rend="italic">gaṉa</hi>), the king reigning at the time, and (<hi rend="italic">the assembly of</hi>) all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi> shall protect this charity.</p>
