35 <p>This inscription is also dated in the 5th year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Madiraikoṇḍa Rājakēsarivarman</hi>. It registers a gift of sheep for a lamp to the Śiva temple at <hi rend="bold">Tiruvoṟṟiyūr</hi>. The donor was one of the nobles (<hi rend="italic">perundaram</hi>) of <hi rend="italic">Uḍaiyār</hi> <hi rend="bold">śrī-Uttama-Chōḷa</hi> who is undoubtedly king <hi rend="bold">Madhurāntaka Uttama-Chōḷa</hi>, the paternal uncle of <hi rend="bold">Rājarāja</hi> I. A reasonable doubt may arise why <hi rend="bold">Uttama-Chōḷa</hi> is given here the title of a ruling king and not that of a prince. It was perhaps because he was the chosen successor of <hi rend="bold">Gaṇḍarāditya</hi> at the time. We know, however, that he actually came to the Chōḷa throne only after one or two other kings had reigned subsequent to his father's death.</p>
